A Novel Game-Based Assessment Of Risk-Taking Propensity: Development And Psychometric Evidence, Danielle L. Head
A Novel Game-Based Assessment Of Risk-Taking Propensity: Development And Psychometric Evidence, Danielle L. Head
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Risk-taking propensity is defined and measured in different ways across the literature, resulting in assessment issues related to construct validity (Bran & Vaidis, 2020). Multimethod assessment approaches can bolster construct validity by capturing more facets of risk-taking propensity (Meyer et al., 2001). Risk-taking propensity is assessed through self-report questionnaires (Zhang et al., 2019), which exhibit good test-retest reliability (Frey et al., 2017) and predictive validity (Beauchamp et al., 2017), and behavioral tasks (Aklin et al., 2005), which are less psychometrically sound, lacking convergent validity and test-retest reliability (Frey et al., 2017). Guided by evidence-centered design principles (Mislevy, 2013), a novel …
Ethnoracial Characterization Of Cognitive Function And Activities Of Daily Living In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Justine A. Bachmann
Ethnoracial Characterization Of Cognitive Function And Activities Of Daily Living In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Justine A. Bachmann
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Objective: Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), lead to progressive cognitive and functional decline, which significantly affects individuals’ ability to perform their everyday Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Occupational Therapist (OTs) assess cognitive impairments and their impact on daily function by utilizing tools like the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to guide intervention planning. However, research on the MoCA’s effectiveness across ethnoracial groups is limited, raising potential biases in the accuracy of cognitive assessments. This study examines the relationship between cognitive function, measured by the MoCA, and functional impairment, assessed using the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), among ethnoracial older adults …
Oral Prevalence Of Selenomonas Noxia Differs Among Orthodontic Patients Compared To Non-Orthodontic Controls: A Retrospective Biorepository Analysis, Kyle Hodges
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Introduction: The introduction of fixed orthodontic brackets in orthodontic therapy has the potential to significantly alter the oral microbial flora. Most orthodontic research has focused on cariogenic pathogens, while some evidence has demonstrated an increase in many known periodontal pathogens. However, little is known about the prevalence of the gram-negative periodontal pathogen, Selenomonas noxia (SN) among these patients. Methods: Using an existing saliva biorepository, n=208 samples from adult and pediatric orthodontic and non-orthodontic patients were identified and screened for the presence of SN using qPCR and validated primers. Results: In the pediatric study sample (n=89) 36% tested positive for the presence …
Identifying Alternatively Spliced Events And Exons Between Blood Cell Types, Jessica Holder
Identifying Alternatively Spliced Events And Exons Between Blood Cell Types, Jessica Holder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Transcript isoforms arising from alternative splicing events can contribute to the development of a cell’s identity and function and overall protein diversity. Peripheral blood is a useful model to study and evaluate computational methods for alternative splicing detection due to its abundant data across various sequencing protocols. The alternative splicing events across different blood cell types have not been completely identified and detecting alternative splicing through short read sequencing is still a challenging problem. Here, we propose to integrate multiple bulk RNA-seq datasets of purified blood cells using a novel integration method to identify the cell-type specific alternative splicing events …

Dysregulation Of Vitamin D Receptor And Cyp450 Metabolism Enzymes May Explain Oral Cancer Responsiveness, Dustin Hunsaker
Dysregulation Of Vitamin D Receptor And Cyp450 Metabolism Enzymes May Explain Oral Cancer Responsiveness, Dustin Hunsaker
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many health benefits are associated with Vitamin D (VitD), although deficiency is associated with poor health outcomes and increased risk for cancer development. For example, many tissue specific enzymes are involved in VitD metabolism, and mutations or deletions within Vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes are known to increase cancer risk by altering their functions or bioavailability, although less is known about these phenomena in oral cancers. Using well characterized, commercially available oral cell lines (OKF4, HGF-1, SCC4, SCC9, SCC15, SCC25, CAL27), mRNA expression of P450 cytochrome VitD metabolic enzymes and receptor genes by qPCR revealed differential results. One oral cancer …

Cone Beam Ct Assessment Of The Zygomatico-Maxillary Buttress For Bone Thickness And Clinical Implications For Miniscrew Insertion, Zachary Hendrickson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background: Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) have changed the way many orthodontists practice orthodontics. TADs are mini-screw temporary implants made of titanium or stainless steel that are placed in the patient's bone in different locations to aid in complex biomechanical movements. This complete anchorage aids in distalization, intrusion, protraction, etc. with less reliance on patience compliance. While TADs have made many movements easier, there are limitations such as choice of where to place it, skill at placing them and patient individual physiology and anatomy that can limit the use of TADs.Objectives: Infrazygomatic crest (IZC) TADs are particularly useful for distalization and …
Improved Electric Load Modeling Of Residential Air Conditioning, Julius Johnson
Improved Electric Load Modeling Of Residential Air Conditioning, Julius Johnson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The recent increase in energy production from renewable resource introduces a new challenge in managing and maintaining balance between electricity supply and demand, due to uncertainty and variability of wind speed and solar irradiance. To address this growing problem, demand-side management, such as Demand Response (DR) programs, is employed to adjust power consumption. Residential air conditioners (ACs) are the most suitable candidates for DR, due to their intensive power consumption and inherent thermal inertia that allows flexibility in their operations (by adjusting their set-point temperatures) without sacrificing customer comfort. Most prior research on AC load models assumes that such a …

Cross-Correlation Studies Of The Cosmological 21 Cm Signal And High-Redshift Galaxy Distributions, Simon Matin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) marks a critical phase in cosmic history, during which time the first stars and galaxies ionized the surrounding neutral hydrogen gas. A powerful way to probe this period is by cross-correlating the 21 cm signal from neutral hydrogen with high-redshift galaxy distributions. In this study, we analyze the 21 cm-galaxy cross-power spectrum using simulated sky maps and explore its redshift evolution, revealing a transition from positive correlation at early times (high redshift) to anti-correlation at later stages of reionization (low redshift). Our results highlight the sensitivity of the cross-power spectrum to the evolving ionized structure …

The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 25 combat-experienced Veterans of the Global War on Terror who fit an operational definition of successful resocialization. How do successfully resocialized combat Veterans compare with combat Veterans who became involved with the criminal justice system? Utilizing a snowball method to identify each participant, the most significant finding from these interviews was that two factors seem to differentiate the civilian and military group styles the most, which were the overwhelming importance of purpose and tribe in the lives of combat Veterans. This confirmed the hypothesis that the most significant difference between the civilian and military …
On The Special Cases Of Carmichael’S Totient Conjecture, Christopher Saito
On The Special Cases Of Carmichael’S Totient Conjecture, Christopher Saito
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Euler’s totient function, φ(n), is the arithmetic function defined as the number of positive integers less than or equal to n that are relatively prime to n. In his 1922 paper [3], Professor R. D. Carmichael conjectured that for each positive integer n, there exists at least one positive integer m̸ = n such that φ(m) = φ(n).In this thesis, we consider some relevant literature and explore Carmichael’s totient conjecture for particular values of φ(n) = k. Our main consideration will be the set X_k = {n ∈ N : φ(n) = k}. In identifying X_k for k = 2^t, …

Food insecurity is prevalent among underserved communities and contributes to increasing maternal-child health disparities. The perinatal period from pregnancy through one year postpartum provides a critical window of opportunity to identify and address food insecurity (FI). However, barriers such as inadequate staffing, lack of institutional and community resources have prevented perinatal providers from offering equitable care for FI, defined as providing screening, referrals, and follow-up services. The Social Ecological Model (SEM) is a framework that observes concepts at multiple levels, including (i) individual, (ii) interpersonal, (iii) institutional, (iv) community, and (v) policy. The objective of this study is to understand …
Investigating Decision Factors For Modularization And Standardization Decision On Early Project Phase: Qualitative Comparative Analysis, Amrit Shahi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Modularization involves shifting site-based work to offsite locations to enhance overall productivity, reduce costs, shorten schedules, and improve project competitiveness. By developing and utilizing consistent designs, facility standardization further optimizes project schedules, costs, and value. When combined, they create a leveraging opportunity, as seen in the shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. While both strategies offer significant advantages, capital projects struggle to have a well-informed modularization and standardization decision during the early project phase (i.e., Opportunity Framing). This often results in improper implementation and lower modularization and standardization levels. The main cause for this is the industry’s limited understanding of early-phase high-level …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Aspirations stem from a humanistic perspective, emphasizing the person as a whole. They serve as a foundational and predictive component of an individual’s life. Teachers play a critical role in shaping the successes and challenges their students encounter (Zolkoski, 2019). Aspirations, as a cognitive process grounded in forward-thinking, are essential to personal development and evolve through experiences (Hart, 2016). However, students with disabilities often lack opportunities to explore their aspirations within schools. These students are frequently constrained by both teachers and systemic practices within the school environment (Gilmour et al., 2019). Aspiration exploration is crucial because children and youth need …
