Colorimetric Determination And Speciation Of Arsenic With Silver Diethyldithiocarbamate, Daniel Carl Fischer
Colorimetric Determination And Speciation Of Arsenic With Silver Diethyldithiocarbamate, Daniel Carl Fischer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Silver Diethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) Method is a widely used colorimetric technique for the determination of aqueous arsenic. The chemistry of the process is discussed in detail, and the method is compared to the other Environmental Protection Agency approved arsenic methods. Original modifications to the apparatus, allowing a more efficient reaction initiation are described. The observed detection limit of the improved procedure is 5 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g As/L (0.5 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g As). Due to the varied toxicity of arsenic compounds and oxidation states in the environment, speciation techniques are important. A review of the literature regarding the determination of individual arsenic species is presented. …
Evaluation Of Purging Methods When Sampling For Volatile Organic Compounds From Low-Yield Monitoring Wells, William Lowry Halligan
Evaluation Of Purging Methods When Sampling For Volatile Organic Compounds From Low-Yield Monitoring Wells, William Lowry Halligan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this laboratory study was to determine the effects various purging procedures have on chlorobenzene and 1,1,1-Trichloroethane concentrations in a simulated monitoring well and how effective purging procedures were in providing representative samples. The experimental apparatus consisted of a teflon monitoring well complete with filter pack and bentonite seal constructed in a 10.2 cm diameter stainless steel screen and casing which acted as a "borehole" for the monitoring well. Low-permeability soil in a 25.4 cm diameter stainless screen surrounded the borehole and simulated an aquitard or low-permeability aquifer. This apparatus was placed in a tank filled with chlorobenzene …
The Effects Of Educational Intervention On The Myths Surrounding Alzheimer's Disease, Penelope Hallman
The Effects Of Educational Intervention On The Myths Surrounding Alzheimer's Disease, Penelope Hallman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Alzheimer's disease affects millions of Americans and remains the most common form of dementia in the elderly. Due to its evasive origin, myths about the disease have arisen within the general population, creating the need for increased public exposure to the accurate information currently known about Alzheimer's. Toward this end, 58 undergraduates participated in an investigation aimed at examining the amount of accurate information obtained through the use of an educational video about Alzheimer's disease. Results indicate that previous interest in the topic of aging was not a significant factor in the amount of information subjects' possessed about Alzheimer's disease. …
Analysis Of Deformation Bands In The Aztec Sandstone, Valley Of Fire State Park, Nevada, Robin Eugene Hill
Analysis Of Deformation Bands In The Aztec Sandstone, Valley Of Fire State Park, Nevada, Robin Eugene Hill
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Deformation bands were analyzed by mapping and describing over 500 of the structures exposed on a bedding surface of about 560 square meters present in the Aztec Sandstone in the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada; Three sets of deformation bands are present. Two sets are interpreted as coeval and form a conjugate set with a dihedral angle of 90 degRees These are often composed of multiple bands. In contrast, the third set is nearly always a single band which is sinuous or jagged along its length. They often curve sharply near the intersections with the earlier formed sets, becoming …
The Distribution Of Vertical Groundwater Flow In The Saturated Zone Of The Yucca Mountain Area: A Cross-Sectional Finite Element Model, Sandra Jean Haws
The Distribution Of Vertical Groundwater Flow In The Saturated Zone Of The Yucca Mountain Area: A Cross-Sectional Finite Element Model, Sandra Jean Haws
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study uses cross-sectional modeling to explore the saturated groundwater flow at Yucca Mountain in a multi-layer system. Cross-sectional modeling allows the simulation of vertical leakage not included in areal models. The cross section was constructed along an estimated streamline and is 84.3 kilometers long. The conceptual model includes an upper volcanic and lower carbonate aquifer separated by an aquitard with an alluvial aquifer down-gradient. Results indicate that some groundwater flows beneath the high-gradient (low conductivity) zone through the carbonate aquifer. The volcanic aquifer, south of the high gradient zone, must be supplied with additional groundwater as the low conductivity …
Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Tolerance To Thermal Stress, Kris Alan Lyon
Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Tolerance To Thermal Stress, Kris Alan Lyon
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Analysis of variance showed that female Harlan Sprague-Dawley rats treated with E in combination with P (EP) had a significantly higher rectal temperature (Tre) than untreated control animals and those treated with E or P alone. In E treated rats, Tre was significantly higher than control animals and those treated with P; All treatment groups had a significantly lower tail skin temperature as compared to the control animals. The rise in Tre in E and EP treated rats did not appear to result from an increase in metabolism since the rates of oxygen consumption did not differ significantly with hormone …

Reasons for the persistence of poverty are considered and major private and public alternatives to present poverty relief programs are examined.
Visualization Of A Plane Sweep Algorithm For Construction Of The Visibility Graph For Robot Path Planning, Vikas B Patel
Visualization Of A Plane Sweep Algorithm For Construction Of The Visibility Graph For Robot Path Planning, Vikas B Patel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Research and development work in robotics and industrial automation has prompted a need for efficient motion planning algorithms for collision avoidance. To build fully autonomous robots, these algorithms must also model the environment correctly and accurately to safely maneuver the robot around obstacles. The main focus of this thesis is on the following problem and its solution: Given a set of obstacles represented as polygons in two-dimensional space, determine the shortest, collision-free path from the source point of the robot to some destination point. A fast and efficient algorithm for solving this problem is based on a plane-sweeping technique and …

This thesis is an interpretation and evaluation of the problems in the American education system which is failing American citizens by annually producing thousands of illiterates. Moreover, schools are failing to provide an adequate number of skilled workers for government, the military, and business and industry, and that trend will continue unless a drastic restructuring of the entire school system takes place; The paper examines reports on the crisis in education, reviews problems of illiteracy and the impact on technical skills, details concerns of the military, business and industry, and interested individuals regarding the quality of education in the U.S. …
Analysis Of Hotel Guest Room Supply, Donald Walter Raymond
Analysis Of Hotel Guest Room Supply, Donald Walter Raymond
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
"Analysis of Hotel Guest Room Supply" is an exploratory paper that develops both a methodology and a model for estimating the expected number of hotel rooms at a destination location (MSA). The expected number of hotel employees at a destination are estimated from US government data (1980 Census of the Population and County Business Patterns). The hotel employee estimates are used to determine the expected number of hotel guest rooms for a destination location. These estimates were also applied to a third model, inventory shortage, to determine if hotel guest room supply and demand were in a state of equilibrium. …
Counterterrorism In The 1990s: A Framework For Dynamic Analysis, Marilyn Rose Rogers
Counterterrorism In The 1990s: A Framework For Dynamic Analysis, Marilyn Rose Rogers
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The costs of terrorism are high. Beyond the immediate targets of violence, there exists an audience of public perception whose fragile temperament is too often swayed by the seeming randomness of the act. When terrorism gains momentum, legitimate governments lose public confidence in state protection. To minimize such effects, governments must consider a variety of options to counter the impact of terrorism; Chapter One focuses on the necessity of counter-terrorism plans which encompass the totality of the circumstances; Chapter Two examines the historical evolution of terrorism from a tactical open warfare activity to its modern form as a complex political …
Temporal And Spatial Variation In Pelagic Fish Abundance In Lake Mead Determined From Echograms, Gene R. Wilde, Larry J. Paulson
Temporal And Spatial Variation In Pelagic Fish Abundance In Lake Mead Determined From Echograms, Gene R. Wilde, Larry J. Paulson
Publications (WR)
Echograms have been used extensively to locate and estimate the relative abundance of marine fish stocks (Cushing 1973). In freshwater, echograms have been used to describe vertical (Netsch et al. 1971; Eggers 1978; O'Brien et al. 1984; Matthews et al. 1985), spatial (O'Brien et al. 1984; Wanjala et al. 1986) and temporal (Baker and Paulson 1983) patterns in fish abundance. Although most uses of echograms have been qualitative, Mullan and Applegate (1969) and Matthews et al. (1985) obtained relative estimates of fish abundance by counting targets (fish) on echograms. However, neither Mullan and Applegate (1969) nor Matthews et al. (1985) …

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan
Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan
School of Public Health Faculty Research
A variety of magazines are directed at American women. Some emphasize fashion, while others cover child rearing, homemaking, or gardening; still others stress career, coping with multiple women's roles, or feminism. Almost without exception, women's health concerns are periodically addressed by these magazines. Because women are the target audience, I have always assumed that these publications have women's best interests at heart. Is this a realistic assumption? I'm not sure. I also do not know what influence women's magazines have on women's health behavior, but I think it is substantial. If this is so, then shouldn't we hold these publications …

A pumped storage system consists of an upper reservoir and lower reservoir separated by an elevation difference. During low demand energy periods such as nights and weekends water is pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir using available energy from conventional steam electric power plants. During high energy demand periods, such as mornings and afternoons of weekdays, upper reservoir water is allowed to drop back down through the same system of water conduits and turbines, generating electricity to conveniently meet abrupt electrical energy requirements. The same water turbines thus act both as pumps and as conventional hydroelectric turbines. Because …
On Purely Exponential Logic Queries, Kazem Taghva, Tian-Zheng Wu
On Purely Exponential Logic Queries, Kazem Taghva, Tian-Zheng Wu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
The recursive nature of logic programs has long been the subject of optimization techniques [2, 8]. Recently, the database community has taken interest in extending the expressive power of relational algebra by augmenting it with function-free Horn style logic queries. This extension has led to various optimization techniques [2, 6, 8]. It seems, almost invariably, these techniques are most efficient in the processing of linear recursive queries. Moreover, as the equivalence of nonlinear rules to linear rules in general is undecidable [3, 9], the best one can hope is to rewrite some nonlinear rules as linear rules. For this reason, …
Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan
Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Sexual behavior is both a health issue and a moral issue. Hence public education on sexuality has traditionally come from two main sources, those individuals or groups concerned with health and those concerned with morals. In his book No Magic Bullet (Oxford University Press, 1985), Allan Brandt describes the tensions that developed between these groups over the control of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States early in this century. Both groups wanted to control sexual behavior, but for different reasons. Public health personnel wanted to change sexual behavior in order to control infection and disease, while moralists believed that …

Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Publications (WR)
The effective use of artificial wetlands for treatment of municipal wastewater is well documented; however, design and economic data for artificial wetlands development are limited (Gersberg et al., 1984a). This is due partly to regional differences in climate, soils, and vegetation and partly to the desired waste treatment. As a result, specific treatment levels and cost benefits relative to the use of an artificial wetlands for a particular site cannot be evaluated adequately without a pilot demonstration project. Las Vegas Wash receives sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area and has been designated as a wetlands community park. Las …

Breast cancer incidence continues to increase in the United States, with more than 130,000 new cases and 42,000 deaths expected this year. Today, one in every ten women in the United States will develop breast cancer at sometime during their lives. Breast cancer can be prevented by early prophylactic bilateral mastectomy, ie, removal of the breasts before any signs or symptoms develop. This practice was advocated by a male gynecologist colleague of mine. When I expressed horror at his suggestion that I have such a procedure at age 32, he challenged me to defend myself against advocating a practice that …

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …

G. H. Mead, Socialism, And The Progressive Agenda, Dmitri N. Shalin
Sociology Faculty Research
Mead is known today primarily for his original philosophy and social psychology. Much less familiar to us is Mead the reformer, a man who sought to balance political engagement with academic detachment and who established himself as an astute critic of contemporary American society. This paper examines Mead's political beliefs and his theory of the reform process. Drawing on little known sources and archival materials, it demonstrates that Mead shared socialism's humanitarian ends and that, following the dominant progressive ideology of his time, he sought to accomplish these ends by constitutional means. An argument is made that Mead's ideological commitments …

In Hope Of Heaven: English Recusant Prison Writings Of The Sixteenth Century, Paul E Strauss
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the prison writings of four Catholic writers in sixteenth century England, all of whom were imprisoned for their failure to take the Oath of Supremacy acknowledging the English monarch as Head of the Church. They were all executed or exiled for their resistance to the Oath. They also wrote books while they were in prison to encourage themselves and others to persist in the faith, with the exception of Robert Southwell, who wrote his book shortly before his imprisonment; John Fisher was imprisoned in 1534 and executed in 1535. While in prison he wrote two letters …

Morphology And Development Of The Red Rock Canyon Alluvial Fan, Clark County, Nevada, Cheryl Mcdonnell-Canan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Changes in morphology and pedogenic carbonate accumulation establish relative ages of a chronosequence of calcic soils and pedogenic calcretes that underlie four surfaces identified on the Red Rock Canyon alluvial fan. All surfaces identified are formed of limestone alluvium, occur at elevations of 853 m, and share the same climate and vegetation. These surfaces were mapped and delimited by color, texture, dissection, and soil development and were ranked in relative age by elevation and topographic position; Because of difficulty in measuring pedogenic carbonate in soils derived from calcareous alluvium, a technique employing macroscopic and microscopic visual determinations, combined with Chittick …

Hydrology Of Bishop Creek, Inyo County, California: An Isotopic Analysis, Michael Louis Space
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Bishop Creek, located in east-central California on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada supports fauna and flora that otherwise could not exist. There are approximately 3000 meters of relief in the Bishop Creek watershed. The headwaters of the creek originate from three man-made lakes, situated at 2790 to 2975 meters above sea level. During its course, diverted water from Bishop Creek flows through a series of five hydroelectric power plants, resulting in streamflow that is less than that expected under natural conditions much of the year. Stream diversion for hydroelectric power production may have adverse effects on the riparian …
