The Secret Smile: Mirth And Humor In The Tales And Sketches Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Steele Power
The Secret Smile: Mirth And Humor In The Tales And Sketches Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Steele Power
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
To declare that Nathaniel Hawthorne is not known for humor would be a conspicuous understatement, for literary criticism has assigned to him the role of a melancholy, reclusive descendant of Puritans who explores and expounds the evil that lurks in the heart of man. In spite of this grave characterization, initiated by Melville in the critical essay "Hawthorne and his Mosses" and cultivated by the melodramatic exaggeration of Hawthorne himself, a thorough and unprejudiced reading of the tales and sketches reveals an abundance of humor and mirth; This study surveys the subtle humor evinced in many stories through the ironic …
Effects Of Soil Moisture, Soil Carbonate And Organic Matter Content On Vapor Phase Sorption Of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Inverse Gas Chromatography, John Stephen Schmeltzer
Effects Of Soil Moisture, Soil Carbonate And Organic Matter Content On Vapor Phase Sorption Of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Inverse Gas Chromatography, John Stephen Schmeltzer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Sorption of VOCs from the vapor phase to soils is an important variable in predicting VOC contaminant movement in unsaturated soils. Experiments were performed which evaluated the effects of soil moisture, carbonate, and organic matter content on VOC sorption. Sorption measurements were performed for ten VOC compounds: trichloroethylene (TCE); 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA); benzene; toluene; ethylbenzene; chlorobenzene; heptane; and pentane. Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC) was the primary method used to measure VOC sorption in these experiments. Sorption for all the evaluated VOCs decreased with increasing moisture. Non-reversibility in the water characteristic curve of water had significant implications for the sorption of VOCs …
The Effect Of Surface Treatment And Rolling Direction On The Fatigue Behavior Of Grade One Commercially Pure Titanium, Shilong Tang
The Effect Of Surface Treatment And Rolling Direction On The Fatigue Behavior Of Grade One Commercially Pure Titanium, Shilong Tang
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Fully-reversed bending fatigue tests were conducted on both the as-received and finished grade one commercially pure titanium. Finishing is done by a process developed by TiMesh Inc., and known as TiMesh finishing. Results show that TiMesh finishing can not only increase material fatigue life at least by two times at the stress level of 25 Ksi, but also eliminate the anisotropic fatigue behavior observed in the as-received materials.

A Cubic And Bicubic Method For Curve And Surface Estimation, Niki M Anagnostopoulou
A Cubic And Bicubic Method For Curve And Surface Estimation, Niki M Anagnostopoulou
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A deterministic cubic and bicubic method for curve and surface estimation is presented. The method presented, does not assume that the surface to be estimated, based on a given set of data in the three dimensional space, has a continuous first or second derivatives. The given data does not have to be equidistant. Also, since the method leads to parametric equations for the patches of the surface, the estimating surface does not need to be a function. Parameters {dollar}h\sb{i,j}{dollar} are used for continuity and stress.
"Such Contented Workers": Mine-Mill Organizers In The Ely, Nevada Copper District, 1920--1943, David Myrwin Anderson
"Such Contented Workers": Mine-Mill Organizers In The Ely, Nevada Copper District, 1920--1943, David Myrwin Anderson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis historically examines CIO union organizers in the Ely, Nevada copper district from 1941 to 1943, when three International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers (Mine-Mill) affiliates won National Labor Relations Board certification elections. Through their educational function of mobilizing working-class support for the union and of filtering the international union's progressive program to its locals, the Mine-Mill organizers fulfilled Antonio Gramsci's concept of the "organic intellectual." Although conditions favorable for unionization were apparent by the mid-1930s, Mine-Mill was initially frustrated as the union's left-wing and moderate leaders clashed over tactics, allowing several AFL craft unions to gain …
The Mechanism And Function Of Transient Pressure Fluctuations Occurring In The Lungs During Diving In The Turtle, Trachemys (=Pseudemys); Scripta Elegans, Henry Lee Bermudez
The Mechanism And Function Of Transient Pressure Fluctuations Occurring In The Lungs During Diving In The Turtle, Trachemys (=Pseudemys); Scripta Elegans, Henry Lee Bermudez
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Recurring, brief fluctuations in lung pressure, refered to as Lung Pressure Transiets (LPTs), lasting approximately 5-6 seconds and with an amplitude of +0.25-2.0 mmHg were measured in nearly 30% of all voluntary dives in the aquatic turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans. LPTs were studied to determine if they could enhance pulmonary gas exchange. Skeletal muscle is the primary mechanism responsible for creating these pressure fluctuations, based on their persistence following inactivation or smooth muscle by atropine, a muscarinic blocking agent. Gas distribution experiments using helium injected into the lungs indicated that pulmonary gas distribution within a single lung and between lungs …
Groundwater Contamination By Selenium, Nitrate, Coliform Bacteria, And Volatile Organic Compounds In The Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, Shallow Aquifer Zone, Arthur Neil Bashor
Groundwater Contamination By Selenium, Nitrate, Coliform Bacteria, And Volatile Organic Compounds In The Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, Shallow Aquifer Zone, Arthur Neil Bashor
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A network of 27 shallow groundwater monitoring wells in the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, was sampled for selenium, nitrate, coliform bacteria and 37 volatile organic compounds. A distinct pattern of elevated levels of selenium, nitrates, and chloroform was observed in the developed portions of the valley. Evidence suggests that the probable sources for these contaminants are linked to the practice of high water-use irrigation for turfgrass landscaping. Selenium was observed to be concentrated in the upper 50 cm of an undisturbed soil sample, but can be mobilized by the application of irrigation water to the naturally seleniferous soils and transported …
A Phylogeographic Investigation Of The Mountain Chickadee, Michael John Boyles
A Phylogeographic Investigation Of The Mountain Chickadee, Michael John Boyles
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Mountain Chickadees (Parus gambeli) were collected from mountain ranges of the Great Basin and surrounding areas. Restriction endonuclease digestion of their mitochondrial DNA revealed two highly distinct haplotypes. One of these occurred in the Great Basin and extended eastward into Arizona and the Rocky Mountains of Utah. The other occurred in locations west of the Great Basin, including the Sierra-Nevada Mountains and southern California. Patterns of divergence were not wholly consistent with the subspecific taxonomy. The magnitude of genetic differentiation between haplotypes was larger than what is commonly reported for avian populations. The geographic partitioning of haplotypes may be a …
Task Allocation And Migration On A Star-Network, Safdar F Chatiwala
Task Allocation And Migration On A Star-Network, Safdar F Chatiwala
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Modern day applications require computational power which cannot be satisfied with uniprocessor systems. So the use of multiprocessor systems in such jobs becomes necessary. This thesis presents an approach of allocating the tasks to a multiprocessor system called the star network. Generally, an incoming task requires only a part of the star network, and not the whole network, for its execution. So, we need a task allocation strategy which can identify the free processors forming a substar and allocate tasks to these substars. The task executes for a time equal to task residence time and then relinquishes the substar. Sometimes …
Variable Structure And Singular Perturbation Control Of Elastic Dynamical Systems, Shailaja Chenumalla
Variable Structure And Singular Perturbation Control Of Elastic Dynamical Systems, Shailaja Chenumalla
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis treats the question of control of flexible dynamical systems for space applications. Two elastic dynamical systems are considered; The multibody system developed in Phillips Laboratory, Edwards Air Force Base, CA consists of two elastic links actuated by electric motors at the joints and rotate on a smooth horizontal granite table. An air bearing is used, which allows the whole system to float on the air so that the frictional forces do not exist between the support plate and the granite table. The controlled output is judiciously chosen such that the zero dynamics are stable or almost stable. For …
Comparison And Correlation Of Lithostratigraphic And Hydrostratigraphic Units Of Southwest Area 20, Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Deborah Ann Dale
Comparison And Correlation Of Lithostratigraphic And Hydrostratigraphic Units Of Southwest Area 20, Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Deborah Ann Dale
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Traditionally, the boundaries of hydrogeologic units are restricted to the lithologic boundaries of the rock in which the hydrogeologic unit is recognized. This type of identification places emphasis on the composition and lithic characteristic of the unit rather than the material properties of the rock that affect potential ground-water flow. Hydrostratigraphic units represent an improved method of defining potential ground-water flow by identifying and grouping hydrologic units based upon the porosity and permeability of the rocks--not on geologic contacts, thus removing the limitations of presently defined lithostratigraphic boundaries; Six major and four minor hydrostratigraphic units were identified in and correlated …
The Role Of Attributional Style, Dysfunctional Attitudes, And Negative Life Events On Depression In College Students, Linda V Frantom
The Role Of Attributional Style, Dysfunctional Attitudes, And Negative Life Events On Depression In College Students, Linda V Frantom
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Two major cognitive theories, Beck's cognitive theory (1967) and Seligman's reformulated learned helplessness theory (1978), have dominated depression research over the last fifteen years. Both of these theories propose a diathesis-stress model in which significant life events are imparted by specific cognitive styles; This study incorporated the major tenets of both theories to examine the role of dysfunctional attitudes, attributional style, and negative life events on Beck Depression Inventory scores in college students. It was hypothesized that the latter two components would interact with negative life events to predict initial and future depression scores; Ninety-eight introductory psychology students completed a …
The Effect Of Participation In A Sport And Recreation Program On Job And Community Satisfaction, Stacey Marie Gorney
The Effect Of Participation In A Sport And Recreation Program On Job And Community Satisfaction, Stacey Marie Gorney
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The implementation of employee recreation programs has declined, giving away to programs which put more emphasis on health and fitness. Shinew & Crossley (1989) suggested that employee recreation programs may contain benefits comparable to those of employee health promotion programs. Research that has examined employee recreation programs and their benefits have been limited. The present study investigated employee participation (N = 122) in a community-sponsored employee recreation program named the Corporate Challenge. This study examined the effects of employee participation in the Corporate Challenge on employee job satisfaction, overall community satisfaction, and an employee's overall feelings of community life importance. …

The Metabolic Rate Of Xenopus Laevis: Interactional Influences Of Development And Short Term Hypoxia, Dulynn Hastings
The Metabolic Rate Of Xenopus Laevis: Interactional Influences Of Development And Short Term Hypoxia, Dulynn Hastings
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Amphibians undergo pronounced physiological and morphological adjustments during metamorphosis, due in large part to the change from water breathing to predominantly air breathing. A developmental change in the ability of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to transport oxygen or a change in tissue demand for oxygen may be reflected in the aerobic metabolic rate (MO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}). This study focuses on how MO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} of the South African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) is affected by short term hypoxia during development. MO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} of animals from Nieuwkoop and Faber stages 1-66, 1 month post-metamorphic froglets, and adult frogs were measured under conditions of normoxia and …

The purpose of this study was to compare breast self-examination (BSE) behavior of professional nurses with non-nursing women alumni, and to describe the factors which influence regular adherence to BSE. The age range of the N = 549 women was 22 to 72 years. The factors of knowledge, self-esteem, attitudes, beliefs and demographics were examined. The conceptual framework was Betty Neuman's Health Care System Model. A sample of 439 professional nurses was compared to a sample of 110 women alumni. The survey questionnaire was made up of Champion's Health Belief and Knowledge tools, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. The analysis …
The Effect Of Prophylactic Knee Braces On Running Gait, Charles Lawson Liggett
The Effect Of Prophylactic Knee Braces On Running Gait, Charles Lawson Liggett
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The use of prophylactic knee braces to prevent knee injuries in football players might increase the risk of injuries to the players because of changes in normal function. This study focused on one of seven criteria for knee braces developed by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, namely that a brace should not interfere with normal running function in the lower extremity. Subjects with no prior history of knee injury were filmed while running on a treadmill. Digital analysis of each subject's running gait with and without the use of knee braces was performed. The knee, ankle and hip joints …
The Effect Of Fly Ash On Clay, Bahman Purkhosrow
The Effect Of Fly Ash On Clay, Bahman Purkhosrow
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Preliminary studies to determine the effect of mixing fly ash with regional swelling of clayey soils indicated these mixtures were superior in certain engineering properties. Mixtures of clay soil, and fly ash at 10, 20, 30, and 40 percent exhibited reduced plasticity and swelling characteristics while the unconfined compression strength of the mixture increased as the percentage of fly ash increased. Based upon the laboratory test results, the possibility of stabilizing swelling soils by using fly ash in structural fills should be practical. The use of fly ash to reduce high plasticity and swelling in soils may prove to be …
Familial Influences Of Anxiety In Youngsters, Diane Wadiak Backus
Familial Influences Of Anxiety In Youngsters, Diane Wadiak Backus
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study sought to determine the degree to which various family factors correlate with child anxiety. Fifty-nine subjects, aged 12 through 18, completed the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale. Parents of these children completed the Family Environment Scale, the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults. Results indicated that maternal level of anxiety was the only familial factor that was significantly correlated with child anxiety. There was a non-significant but noteworthy negative correlation between child anxiety and the "independence" subscale of the Family Environment Scale. Based on these findings, recommendations for prevention, assessment, and treatment are …
Theoretical Study Of Interacting Low Dimensional Electron Systems, Jianzhong Zheng
Theoretical Study Of Interacting Low Dimensional Electron Systems, Jianzhong Zheng
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis addresses the question of a strongly interacting many-body problem: the Hubbard model on one- and two-dimensional lattices. The technique employed is the small-cluster method wherein the full many-body Hamiltonian for finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions (PBC's) is solved exactly. We first apply this technique to an extended one-dimensional chain and a two-dimensional square-lattice Hubbard model. We then construct a two-dimensional overlayer/substrate Hubbard model with first- and second-nearest-neighbor hopping, on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, and overlayer-site orbital energy. The ground-state properties are investigated and discussed in a many-body picture.

Music Video Viewing And Adolescents' Perceptions Of Movie Musicals, Patricia Callanan Coaley
Music Video Viewing And Adolescents' Perceptions Of Movie Musicals, Patricia Callanan Coaley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The study of movie musicals has led some communication scholars to note the similarities between this film genre and music videos. Other researchers have noted that music videos could be the final destruction of the nearly extinct Hollywood musical. No empirical studies were found that focused on the relationship between music video viewing and movie musicals. However, existing studies have noted the influence music videos and Music Television (MTV) have on the adolescent viewer. This study sought to examine the relationship between adolescents' perceptions of music videos and movie musicals through a survey of 345 students from two Southern Nevada …
Evaluating Daily Life Stressors In Children: Parent-Child Agreement, Julie Foutz Beasley
Evaluating Daily Life Stressors In Children: Parent-Child Agreement, Julie Foutz Beasley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Although a large amount of research has been reported regarding the effects of stressful life events (i.e., divorce, severe illness) on children, only a small amount has addressed the measurement of daily life stressors (i.e., school, home, social activities). More specifically, the issue of parent-child agreement on childhood daily life stressors has been relatively unexamined. The present study examined 98 child, adolescent, and parent reports of childhood daily stress. Results indicated that parents underreport daily stress for their children. Specifically, fathers report lower levels of child stress, while mothers overestimate negative affectivity. Finally, younger children reported more daily stress, especially …
The Validity Of Using Grip Strength To Represent Total Body Strength And Of Using A 1rm Bench Press To Represent Upper Body Strength, Kristina Lynn Tucky
The Validity Of Using Grip Strength To Represent Total Body Strength And Of Using A 1rm Bench Press To Represent Upper Body Strength, Kristina Lynn Tucky
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Thirty-two females, aged 18-30 years, executed 22 isometric strength measurements using strength table procedures similar to Clarke's (1966). A load cell was used in place of the cable tensiometer used by Clarke. Each subject was also administered a grip strength test and a 1RM bench press test. Two criterion measures of strength were identified from the results of the isometric strength tests: (1) total body strength was defined as the sum of the 22 isometric strength measurements and (2) upper body strength was defined as the sum of the 8 upper body isometric strength measurements. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient was …

Estimation Of Leakage Between The Shallow And Principal Aquifers In The Las Vegas Valley Water District's Main Well Field, Las Vegas, Nevada, Alan Joseph Bernholtz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Under natural conditions in Las Vegas Valley the shallow aquifer was recharged by upward leakage of ground water from the principal aquifer. Presently recharge to the shallow aquifer is infiltration from over-irrigation which poses a potential threat to the quality of the principal aquifer. To evaluate this contamination potential, water levels from monitoring wells in both aquifers were collected, a three dimensional finite difference ground-water flow model (MODFLOW) was developed to estimate volume and velocity of potential leakage, and water quality samples were collected; Water levels collected in the shallow aquifer show a dependency on potentiometric head in the principal …

The Status Of Speech Communication In The Clark County High Schools, Rheba C Washington-Lindsey
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Clark County School District has implemented the communication strand within the high school English curriculum. Its objectives and activities provide instructional guidelines for teacher use within the classroom situation. This study surveyed high school English teachers and found that the majority of teachers did little or nothing to incorporate speech in their curriculum. The principal reasons given were lack of time, lack of materials, and inadequate university preparation. The study also found newer teachers were more receptive to changes that would allow them to include speech in the curriculum than are veteran teachers; Most teachers support speech education but …
