The Utilization Of Selected Marketing Elements By Higher Education Institutions, Chester Donald Kajcienski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the utilization of selected marketing elements by higher education institutions enrolling 5,000 or more students by headcount. Selected marketing elements were determined by a content analysis of marketing textbooks which yielded 20 such elements: product, price, strategy, market, promotion, research, mix, analysis, advertising, target, competition, segment, service, information, demand, forecasting, place, purchase, image, and demographics. These elements became the basis for a survey instrument designed specifically for this project. Furthermore, 15 items on the survey instrument suggested various factors that might constrain the full utilization of marketing; In terms of the selected …

Public Opinion And The Deconsolidation Of The Clark County School District, Matthew Michael Lusk Jan 1996

Public Opinion And The Deconsolidation Of The Clark County School District, Matthew Michael Lusk

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Without question, the Clark County School District, centered in Las Vegas, Nevada, has experienced a pattern of tremendous growth over the last decade. During that period, dozens of new schools have been built to alleviate the overcrowded conditions, with many more being needed as the population continues to expand. According to the literature, however, bigger school districts do not always mean better educated students, and the Clark County School District consequently has had to contend with a growing number of vocal community members concerned about its size and the perceived problems that accompany it; In light of these facts, a …

Having Their Say: Parents Of High-Achieving African American Elementary Students Talk About The Home-School Relationship, Donna Mahler Jan 1996

Having Their Say: Parents Of High-Achieving African American Elementary Students Talk About The Home-School Relationship, Donna Mahler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Having Their Say: Parents of High-Achieving African American Elementary Students Talk About the Home-School Relationship describes a qualitative research study that explored parents' perceptions of their role in education and how these perceptions translate into specific parent involvement practices both at home and at school. It also identifies the concerns that African American parents have about their children's schooling and offers their suggestions for improvement; Twelve parents of African American students identified as "high-achieving" and of varying socioeconomic levels participated in either a focus group discussion or in an individual in-depth interview about parent involvement in education. Epstein's theoretical model …

Comparative Biogeography Within And Among Four Species Of Lizards In Western North American Deserts (Crotaphytidae: Crotaphytus Bicinctores, C Collaris, Gambelia Wislizeni; Phrynosomatidae: Sceloporus Magister), David I Orange Jan 1996

Comparative Biogeography Within And Among Four Species Of Lizards In Western North American Deserts (Crotaphytidae: Crotaphytus Bicinctores, C Collaris, Gambelia Wislizeni; Phrynosomatidae: Sceloporus Magister), David I Orange

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Evidence of deep geographic structure in many taxonomic lineages throughout the arid regions of western North America suggests potential for recovering episodes of vicariant isolation and divergence through comparative biogeographic approaches. Vicariance biogeography predicts that suites of co-occurring taxa should demonstrate similar geographic patterns of genetic divergence resulting from simultaneous isolation of formerly contiguous regional populations. Previous molecular phylogeographic work on small, non-volant desert taxa tended to focus on one or two species, often with limited distributions. Different methods of sampling and analyses confound general statements about the presence of regional endemic biotas. Assessment of general biogeographic patterns in biotas …

Modifying The Corrosion Resistance Of Stainless Steel Through Thermal Spray And Diffusion Applied Galvanic Aluminized Coatings, Dave Dror Bergman Jan 1996

Modifying The Corrosion Resistance Of Stainless Steel Through Thermal Spray And Diffusion Applied Galvanic Aluminized Coatings, Dave Dror Bergman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main reason for the utilization of stainless steels in many applications is due to their resistance to corrosion. Chromium is the main alloying element and stainless steel contains a minimum of 11%. Austenitic stainless steels, Type 300 series, contain nickel as the principal austenite former. The austenitic stainless steels possess better corrosion resistance than most of the chromium stainless steels. For this reason austenitic stainless steels are specified for more severe corrosion conditions in the process industries. Austenitic stainless steels, however, are susceptible to several forms of corrosion in chloride containing environments; This research focuses on the application of …

Contesting The Commons: Race, Ethnicity, Class, Occupation, And Environment In Central Nevada, 1850-1880, Brian Wesley Frehner Jan 1996

Contesting The Commons: Race, Ethnicity, Class, Occupation, And Environment In Central Nevada, 1850-1880, Brian Wesley Frehner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis tells a story of resource competition in central Nevada primarily between two groups--Shoshone Indians who inhabited the region for centuries and European Americans who arrived in the nineteenth century. Although people who competed for control of the region's pinion pine trees generally fell into either of these categories, the labels of Indian and European grossly oversimplify the diversity within each group. Both Shoshone and Europeans comprised a variety of sub-groupings that utilized resources in a distinct manner and for purposes that often differed from those of the larger population. A number of different Shoshone bands and families competed …

Frank Norris's "Mcteague" And Popular Culture, Ruby M Fowler Jan 1996

Frank Norris's "Mcteague" And Popular Culture, Ruby M Fowler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Popular culture consists of the events and artifacts of which everyday life is composed. In McTeague: A Story of San Francisco, the popular culture of 1890's working class San Franciscans is reported by Frank Norris with scrupulous accuracy. In twentieth century versions of McTeague, popular culture continues to be employed in innovative ways. Erich von Stroheim in Greed expands on Norris's use of popular culture in an attempt to create on film a mirror reflection of life. In the opera McTeague, William Bolcom and Robert Altman combine popular culture with elite culture in unconventional ways to bring the story to …

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox Jan 1996

Impact Of Casinos On Residential Property Values: Henderson, Nevada, Barbara Kozarich Giannini

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines whether residential property values are affected by proximity to gaming establishments. Using a sample of houses from Henderson, Nevada, a hedonic price model is employed to relate residential sales prices to individual housing characteristics, including proximity to the nearest gaming establishment. Results indicate that proximity to gaming establishments do indeed lower residential property values. Further, it appears that larger gaming establishments have a larger impact on prices than smaller ones in Old HenderSon

Unbroken Chain: Modern Social Banditry In South La, Kenneth M Harlan Jan 1996

Unbroken Chain: Modern Social Banditry In South La, Kenneth M Harlan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During the 1960s, America's cities experienced more than 200 cases of civil unrest. The purpose of these communal protests was to reverse oppression and create an order based on egalitarian principals. The first of these major urban rebellions occurred in Los Angeles, California in August 1965. The violence found in the South LA uprising represents the evolution of Eric Hobsbawm's social banditry paradigm. Modern social banditry is a combination of communal protest against oppressive forces and extralegal activity commonly associated with the vigilance movements of nineteenth-century America. This type of collective violence with its socioeconomic agenda seeks to emulate the …

Parting The Bamboo Curtain: The Enigmatic Political And Strategic Quest Of Richard Nixon For Detente With Communist China, Ian C Harrison Jan 1996

Parting The Bamboo Curtain: The Enigmatic Political And Strategic Quest Of Richard Nixon For Detente With Communist China, Ian C Harrison

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

President Richard Nixon's decision to unofficially recognize Communist China during the early 1970s represented an apparently sudden political and strategic turnabout for both he and the United States. After decades of virulent anti-Communism upon which a meteoric political career was built, Nixon, faced with mounting domestic pressures to end the Vietnam War and the necessity of obtaining policy concessions from the Soviet Union, embarked upon a course of detente with Mainland China that seemed to completely contradict his hawkish, Cold Warrior image. Far from being a strictly political maneuver in the months leading to the 1972 presidential election, Nixon's decision …

Girlfriend Or Esposa? Cultural Scenarios In Translation, Megan S Fuller Jan 1996

Girlfriend Or Esposa? Cultural Scenarios In Translation, Megan S Fuller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the United States only married couples are called by the terms husband and wife. In Mexico, both married and unmarried cohabiting couples are referred to as esposo and esposa, terms usually translated as 'husband' and 'wife'. By using schema theory, American and Mexican cultural scenarios of marriage are developed and compared. The characteristics most important to terminological usage are determined. For Americans, the terms husband and wife indicate partners with a permanent commitment to each other. Mexicans, on the other hand, use the terms esposo and esposa as indices of adult status, which can be achieved through cohabitation.

Feature Recognition In Ocr Text, Jeffrey Todd Gilbreth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the recognition and extraction of special word sequences, representing concepts, from OCR text. Unlike general index terms, concepts can consist of one or more terms that combined, have higher retrieval value than the terms alone (i.e. acronyms, proper nouns, phrases). An algorithm to recognize acronyms and their definitions will be presented. An evaluation of the algorithm will also be presented.

The Use Of The Genitive In The Arthurian Section Of Layamon's "Brut", Heather Fleming Grigg Jan 1996

The Use Of The Genitive In The Arthurian Section Of Layamon's "Brut", Heather Fleming Grigg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

New insights into the use of the genitive case in Early Middle English are possible because of the recent publication of Bruce Mitchell's Old English Syntax which updates previous exhaustive grammars. Using Layamon's Brut as a basis of study, it was found that Layamon employs a variety of case endings to indicate the genitive; alternatively, he uses of-periphrasis. He appears to be choosing among these grammatically acceptable possibilities in order to facilitate meter and rhyme.

The Distribution Of Household Labor: Comparing Spouses' Role Orientation, Ratings Of Satisfaction, And Amount Of Discussion, Christina Elaine Hanson Jan 1996

The Distribution Of Household Labor: Comparing Spouses' Role Orientation, Ratings Of Satisfaction, And Amount Of Discussion, Christina Elaine Hanson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study of 114 married couples investigated Role Orientation and how it related to satisfaction with the division of household labor. Husbands' and wives' Role Orientations were significantly different, with husbands being more traditional. Spouses Role Orientation scores were correlated. Husbands were more satisfied with the household division of labor. A wife's Role Orientation score was associated with her labor satisfaction, however, the husband's Role Orientation wasn't associated with his satisfaction. Couple's combined Role Orientations were related to their labor satisfaction, and as scores became more modern, couple satisfaction decreased. Therefore, the more modern a couple's household labor orientation, the …

An Evolution Of Creativity And Ritual: The Immortalizing Craftmenship Of The Chinchorro Morticians, Russell Allen Hapke Jan 1996

An Evolution Of Creativity And Ritual: The Immortalizing Craftmenship Of The Chinchorro Morticians, Russell Allen Hapke

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ancient Chinchorros are the oldest culture known to have developed elaborate artificial mummification practices for their deceased. This study tested a Chinchorro sedentary subsitence strategy proposed by Arriaza (1995a). This proposition conflicts with the present paradigms concerning prehistoric egalitarian societies. By analyzing the mummified remains of twenty-seven individuals, radiocarbon dates and ethnographic mortuarial data of ten other maritime cultures, this thesis builds a base for both supporting and opposing the sedentary proposition. It is suggested that the Chinchorro were sedentary during the black period (ca. 5050-3000 B.C.) but more mobile during the subsequent red and mud-coated periods. The style, …

An Approach To Building A Secure And Persistent Distributed Object Management System, Yu Kin Ho Jan 1996

An Approach To Building A Secure And Persistent Distributed Object Management System, Yu Kin Ho

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) proposed by the Object Management Group (OMG) is a widely accepted standard to provide a system level framework in design and implementation of distributed objects. The core of the Object Management Architecture (OMA) is an Object Request Broker (ORB), which provides transparency of object location, activation, and communications. However, the specification provided by the OMG is not sufficient. For instance, there are no security specifications when handling object requests through the ORBs. The lack of such a security service prevents the use of CORBA from handling sensitive data such as personal and corporate …

A Recent Application Of The Saxe-Binford Hypothesis In Establishing Social Persona, Barbara Ann Holz Jan 1996

A Recent Application Of The Saxe-Binford Hypothesis In Establishing Social Persona, Barbara Ann Holz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An excavation and analysis of an abandoned cemetery located in Las Vegas, Nevada was used to test the Saxe-Binford hypothesis regarding social persona. A total of 128 individuals (117 nonveterans and 11 veterans) were disinterred. These remains were in various different states of decomposition, two different burial types (casket and copper box), three different burial locations, and age ranges between fetal and elderly adult (90s); According to the Saxe-Binford hypothesis certain mortuary attributes should reflect social information. Attributes studied were burial location, burial type (coffin type, urn), headstone type, and associated grave goods. The boundaries of the cemetery sections, burial …

Nuclear Diffusion: A Rethinking Of Why Nation-States "Go Nuclear", Chris Kofinis Jan 1996

Nuclear Diffusion: A Rethinking Of Why Nation-States "Go Nuclear", Chris Kofinis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nuclear Diffusion: A Rethinking of Horizontal Nuclear Weapons Proliferation examines the spread of nuclear weapons throughout the nuclear age. What is pondered are the specific reasons why a state would pursue a nuclear weapons deterrent. For example, are there identifiable reasons or conditions that explain horizontal nuclear weapons proliferation? While numerous arguments have been made for why countries proliferate, this piece posits a simple assumption; A non-nuclear state is inclined to proliferate because of the dramatic nature of the nuclear threat. The imperiled non-nuclear state prefers to proliferate as only the nuclear deterrent ensures relative security in an anarchic nuclear-armed …

Dental Evidence For The Peopling Of Guam, Pamela Lin Lawrence Jan 1996

Dental Evidence For The Peopling Of Guam, Pamela Lin Lawrence

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The morphology of fifty-six dental casts from pre- to early European contact Chamorro skeletal remains from Guam, Micronesia is described based on eighteen tooth crown traits. Chi-square tests for sex dimorphism do not indicate significant differences between males and females. Observer error was found for two traits on the upper first molar and one on the upper canine; The Chamorro dentition exhibits a simplified crown morphology typical of the Sundadont dental pattern. Comparisons of trait frequencies from this study with other Asian and non-Asian samples selected from the literature support Turner's (1990b) suggestion that the Chamorro likely originated in southern …
