Dispositional Empathy, Dyadic Perspective-Taking, And Interpersonal Perceptions Among Married Persons In Relation To Marital Adjustment, Mark E Morgenstern
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Several studies have shown that various aspects of empathy are important in relationship satisfaction. In addition, the similarity, assumed similarity, and accuracy of interpersonal perceptions among married couples have also been shown to be positively related to marital adjustment. The present study examined these variables in a sample of 42 married couples. It was found that Perspective-Taking and Empathic Concern, as well as Dyadic Perspective-Taking were positively associated with marital adjustment. In addition, it was observed that accuracy of interpersonal perceptions was positively related to marital satisfaction and satisfaction regarding conflict resolutions. This significant correlation did not remain, however, when …
A Comparison Of Adolescent Sexual Offenders And Non-Sexually Offending Juvenile Delinquents On Familial, Sexual And Social Variables, Heidi Elizabeth Nagel
A Comparison Of Adolescent Sexual Offenders And Non-Sexually Offending Juvenile Delinquents On Familial, Sexual And Social Variables, Heidi Elizabeth Nagel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Adolescent sexual offenders (n = 27) were compared to non-sexually offending juvenile delinquents (n = 23) on familial, sexual and social variables. The two groups were demographically similar and did not differ significantly on a measure of perceived family environment. It was hypothesized that the two groups would be similar on familial and social variables; that is, both displaying similar levels of perceived dysfunction. It was further hypothesized that the two groups would differ significantly on measured behavioral and cognitive constructs defined as sexual deviance. Non-sexually offending juveniles obtained significantly higher levels of delinquent behaviors whereas the sexual offenders obtained …
Mandatory Uniforms: Employees Are What They Wear, Kathleen S Nelson
Mandatory Uniforms: Employees Are What They Wear, Kathleen S Nelson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Uniform design is an overall scheme which includes four design factors: appearance, function, character and comfort. To what extent do these elements used in the design of mandatory uniforms predict an employee's attitude toward his/her job? Will an employee wearing a lime green polyester uniform that fits poorly and is overly hot feel differently about his job than one wearing a finely tailored, naturally fibered uniform?;An examination of these elements will be conducted as well as an investigation of degree of guest interaction to determine the effect of mandatory uniforms on the attitude toward the job of the hospitality employees …
A Bridge Across The Gender Gap: The Role Of Men In Feminist Discourse, Gabrielle Kenton Renshaw
A Bridge Across The Gender Gap: The Role Of Men In Feminist Discourse, Gabrielle Kenton Renshaw
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The ongoing discourse about meanings and impacts of feminism is a dynamic process of ideas influencing ideas. The process directs the course of the development of feminist theory. Most of the discourse is directed at women by women, but many men have also contributed to the dialectic. This study is an examination of those contributions by men as well as an attempt to understand the impact they have on the women's movement.

Meanings And Measures Taken In Concert Observation Of Bruce Springsteen, September 28, 1992, Los Angeles, Thomas J Rodak
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Since the mid-1970s, Bruce Springsteen's concerts and his rapport with audience members have attracted the attention of leading rock music critics. Witnessing the communication between Springsteen and audience members was the purpose of this study. On-site observation was used to explore the techniques that Springsteen uses to communicate with the audience during the concert; A model, previously employed by Deanna and Timothy Sellnow to determine the effects of musical score upon the lyrics of songs recorded in the studio, was utilized with the on-site observation. The model had not been applied to a concert performance before this study; The findings …
Land And Self In A Mayan Universe, Robert Charles Rusie
Land And Self In A Mayan Universe, Robert Charles Rusie
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper explores the linkages between Mayan religious beliefs as presented in, The Popol Vuh and The Book of Chilam Balam, myth, and modern ethnographic material for clues to Mayan economic behavior. It presents the argument that the "closed corporate system" and the reliance on the municipio as the focus of identity is a function of World-view, and that Mayans see land as a symbol of self and community. The ensuing economic behavior and the strong attachment to "milpa production" is more than an adaptive strategy to the vicissitudes of economic insecurity, but a route to maintaining balance and harmony …
Deception Detection Accuracy: The Effects Of Suspicion And Antisocial Personality Traits, Barbara T Schoephoerster
Deception Detection Accuracy: The Effects Of Suspicion And Antisocial Personality Traits, Barbara T Schoephoerster
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Previous research has indicated that moderate levels of suspicion will enhance deception detection accuracy. This study hypothesized that combining state suspicion and trait suspicion (i.e. antisocial personality traits) in order to create a moderate level of suspicion overall would produce a higher detection accuracy than would be found among individuals who were not suspicious. Participants consisted of 133 UNLV undergraduates, who completed the Antisocial subscale of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II. Participants were assigned to a no suspicion or moderate suspicion condition, viewed a videotape of persons being truthful or deceptive, judged videotape actors as being truthful or untruthful, and …
Friends, Neighbors, Foes And Invaders: Conflicting Images And Experiences Of Japanese Americans In Wartime Nevada, Andrew Benjamin Russell
Friends, Neighbors, Foes And Invaders: Conflicting Images And Experiences Of Japanese Americans In Wartime Nevada, Andrew Benjamin Russell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Japanese Americans of the interior West also faced perils during World War II, up to and including the possibility of internment and mass relocation. Although Nevada contained relatively few Japanese Americans at the outset of the war, the "Japanese question" received serious attention across the state. Early on, Nevadans grappled with the question of what to do about Japanese residents, and these debates spawned vastly different outcomes. In March 1942 the question changed, as many Nevadans began to fear and oppose an expected influx of "California Japs" (Japanese Americans the government was excluding from neighboring states). In this "free" interior …

Characterization Of Microorganisms From The Deep Subsurface That Produce Antimicrobial Substances, Michael Victor Staudaher
Characterization Of Microorganisms From The Deep Subsurface That Produce Antimicrobial Substances, Michael Victor Staudaher
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A group of 95 actinomycete-like bacterial isolates were obtained from the deep subsurface at the Nevada Test Site. These isolates were screened for the ability to inhibit the growth of selected challenge organisms. A subset of 12 isolates were found to produce antibacterial substances during their growth and were termed bioactive. It was hypothesized that because the isolation source was solid rock, some of the bioactive isolates would require the presence of a surface in order to make antibiotic substances, and that some of these isolates would fail to produce antibiotics when grown in broth culture alone. It was further …

Acoustical breakout is the transmission of sound through the walls of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning ducts. Equations for predicting the breakout from rectangular, circular, and oval sheet metal ducts have been published by the American Society of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); Recent advances in manufacturing techniques have led to the development of fiberglass lined sheet metal ducts, and ducts made from fiberglass ductboard. The equations presented by ASHRAE do not accurately predict the transmission loss from fiberglass ducts; This project involved testing of rectangular and circular sheet metal, lined fiberglass, and fiberboard ducts. The breakout transmission …
Logical Rings In The Mutual Exclusion Problem Of Distributed Memory Systems, John Evan Dell
Logical Rings In The Mutual Exclusion Problem Of Distributed Memory Systems, John Evan Dell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, we investigate distributed mutual exclusion algorithms and delineate the features of a new distributed mutual exclusion algorithm. The basis of the algorithm is the logical ring structure employed in token-based mutual exclusion algorithms. Specifically, there exists dynamic properties of the logical ring that, given certain restrictions regarding message traffic flow, passively give useful information about the location of the token. Effectively, the algorithm demonstrates a type of "intelligent routing" that identifies useful shortcuts to in the routing of the token. The result is a reduction in the total number of messages exchanged prior to the execution of …
Investigation Of Regional Flow Patterns In The Ash Meadows Groundwater Basin Of Southern Nevada Using Uranium Isotope Ratios, Dennis Edward Farmer
Investigation Of Regional Flow Patterns In The Ash Meadows Groundwater Basin Of Southern Nevada Using Uranium Isotope Ratios, Dennis Edward Farmer

Uranium concentrations and {dollar}\rm\sp{234}U/\sp{238}U{dollar} isotope ratios were determined for over 100 springs, wells and surface waters in areas on and surrounding the historical nuclear weapons testing range in southern Nevada, the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Uranium concentrations were less than 2 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g/liter in the Spring Mountains, where ground water enters the system, and between 2.5 and 5 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g/liter in waters discharging from the major springs at Ash Meadows, Nevada and the Death Valley-Furnace Creek area of southeastern California. Slightly higher levels of dissolved uranium (6-15 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g/liter) were associated with the weathering of susceptible rocks and the concentration of ground water …
A Novel, Remote Cleaning, Electromagnetic Air Filter, Zhongyi Gu
A Novel, Remote Cleaning, Electromagnetic Air Filter, Zhongyi Gu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
When the enamel-like top layer of the desert soil is compromised, natural and man-made forces result in airborne dust particulates. This is of specific concern in plutonium contaminated soil excavation. Conventional water spraying techniques are effective in preventing large airborne dust particles but are ineffective for dust particles on the order of a few micrometers in diameter and smaller. One means of extracting these fine radio nuclide particulates from the air is with a quasi-electrostatic air filter which charges, traps, transports, and collects them with the aid of electrostatic and quasi-electrostatic fields. Human intervention is virtually eliminated. The air filter …
Determination Of Fifty-Six Elements In Three Distinct Types Of Geological Materials By Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry, Caixia Guo

Forty trace elements in addition to 16 rare earth elements were determined in three distinct rock types and one standard reference material by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Lithium fusion resulted in excellent recovery of rare earth and some trace elements including Be, V, Sr, U, Hf, Nb and Ta, but the some elements Pb, Cr, Zn were lost. Two of the microwave digestion procedures produced similar results and proved …
Predator-Prey Interactions Of Zooplankton From A Shallow Endorheic Lake: Little Fish Lake, Nevada, Stephanie Elise Hampton
Predator-Prey Interactions Of Zooplankton From A Shallow Endorheic Lake: Little Fish Lake, Nevada, Stephanie Elise Hampton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The zooplankton community of Little Fish Lake exists in a seasonally and interannually variable physical environment. This shallow endorheic lake is particularly sensitive to climatic variability; depth and salinity fluctuate during periods of prolonged evaporation or precipitation. I examined zooplankton seasonal succession in Little Fish Lake during a period of relatively low salinity from March 1995 through March 1996. The community was more diverse during my study than it had been in periods of high salinity. While abiotic conditions probably affected the community structure, biotic interactions such as predation likely influenced succession as well. I observed interactions between the predaceous …

Optimal Var Compensation On A Utility Transmission System, Douglas Earl Harshbarger
Optimal Var Compensation On A Utility Transmission System, Douglas Earl Harshbarger
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper presents a method for realizing power loss and reactive power flow reductions on an electrical power transmission system. The method determines the size and location of reactive power compensating capacitors. In the first phase, candidate busses (nodes) are identified by determining which substations are physically able to accommodate new capacitor and associated switching apparatus. Phase two employs an iterative search technique, the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) power flow program and heuristic inputs to choose the single buss most sensitive to real power loss reduction. Reactive power loss reduction and reactive power intertie flow are secondary factors also …
