The Muddy Creek Formation: Depositional Environment, Provenance, And Tectonic Significance In The Western Lake Mead Area, Nevada And Arizona, Allan J. Scott

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the River Mountains, the Muddy Creek Formation is informally divided into four members; the River Mountain conglomerate, the Boulder Basin conglomerate, the lakeshore member, and The Cliffs member; Clasts in the Muddy Creek Formation are composed of andesite, dacite, basalt, rhyolite, quartz monzonite, and granite. Paleocurrent data for the basal River Mountain conglomerate suggest that the transport direction was to the southeast, parallel to the regional strike of high-angle normal faults. The River Mountain conglomerate may have been transported along the axes of basins that were controlled by these faults; The River Mountain conglomerate was probably deposited during a …

The emerging philosophy of the Multicultural and Diversity Committee is that excellence in education cannot be achieved without educational equity for all who enter our schools. This includes (but is not limited to) females, males, people of color, people who live in poverty, people who live alternative lifestyles, people with disabilities, people with a language background other than English, people of all ages, and people who have recently immigrated to the United States. Educational equity is defined by processes that work against marginalization and foster knowledge of and respect for the diverse nature of our population.

There is a recent preoccupation in American schools to involve parents and the community in our children's education. Hillary Clinton's "It takes a village" is a phrase that has become almost as catchy in the 90's as Nancy Reagan's "Just say no" was in the 80's, and unfortunately almost as naively simplistic.

New Acceleration Technique For The Backpropagation Algorithm, Prasad Durga Sadhu Jan 1997

New Acceleration Technique For The Backpropagation Algorithm, Prasad Durga Sadhu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Artificial neural networks have been studied for many years in the hope of achieving human like performance in the area of pattern recognition, speech synthesis and higher level of cognitive process. In the connectionist model there are several interconnected processing elements called the neurons that have limited processing capability. Even though the rate of information transmitted between these elements is limited, the complex interconnection and the cooperative interaction between these elements results in a vastly increased computing power; The neural network models are specified by an organized network topology of interconnected neurons. These networks have to be trained in order …

Feminist Theory: Gender, Race And Recidivism, Amie M Shuck Jan 1997

Feminist Theory: Gender, Race And Recidivism, Amie M Shuck

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Feminists and women of color have criticized criminological theories for being developed by white middle-class men to explain white male delinquency, and thus, are limited in their understanding of crime and deviance within a gender or racial context. The purpose of this study is to use a series of logistic regression models to evaluate this assertion regarding criminological 'theories' of recidivism. The results indicate that there are substantive differences in statistically significant coefficients, models explanatory power, and percent improvement in models ability to correctly classify recidivists between gender, race and gender/race models. These findings suggest that further research should be …

On Numerical Inversion Of The Moment Generating Function, Andy M Tsang Jan 1997

On Numerical Inversion Of The Moment Generating Function, Andy M Tsang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main purpose of this thesis is to apply an algorithm for the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform that recovers the probability density function (PDF) of a sum of nonnegative continuous random variables. The Laplace transform is used in many disciplines. For example, in actuarial sciences, a common application is to study the distribution of the sum of nonnegative independent random variables. Because it is a popular method, numerical techniques have been developed to invert the Laplace transform. In the discrete case, by using a moment generating function (MGF) of a sum of independent discrete variables, the distribution can …

A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Roasting pits in southern Nevada are commonly thought to have functioned to process agave. This assumption is based on the presence of agave quids, the proximity of roasting pits to agave stands, and on ethnographic accounts of agave roasting. Soil samples from two roasting pit complexes confirm this contention, and suggest a secondary use of the features to singe spines off cacti. These conclusions are supported by research on Arizona Strip and Hohokam roasting pits.

Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush Jan 1997

Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The comic book became a mass medium during a series of defining moments in twentieth-century American history. By telling and retelling narratives of individual achievement during the Great Depression, and tales of patriotism during World War II, comic books gained a popular audience rivaling that of agenda-setting national periodicals such as Life or The Saturday Evening Post. In the first postwar decade, however, publishers experimented with themes of crime, horror, teen romance, and social satire in ways that provoked a wave of public hostility. Crusading psychiatrists, politicians, civic groups, and religious leaders led a campaign against the industry that revealed …

It was found that those cases having CASA involvement had significantly fewer placements, tended to be more likely …

Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen Jan 1997

Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yield management is an approach to pricing that is often used by industries in which the marginal production cost is relatively high, while the marginal sales cost is relatively low. The hotel industry meets this criterion. Industry publications demonstrate a keen interest in the revenue enhancing potential of yield management, but there has been little research on the extent to which this pricing technique is actually utilized by hotel general managers; This research tests the proposition that there are eight basic elements of yield management in hotels. The degree to which yield management is practiced is indicated by the extent …
