An Examination Of Distance Learning Utilization In Post-Secondary Hospitality Management Programs, Susan J Raymakers Jan 1999

An Examination Of Distance Learning Utilization In Post-Secondary Hospitality Management Programs, Susan J Raymakers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Post-secondary institutions have long utilized distance learning to expand the base of students. The traditional paper correspondence course has served as a basis for post-secondary education to reach students physically separated from the campus. Recent increases in technology, specifically in networking, have allowed post-secondary institutions to advance the use of distance learning in educational programs. This study identifies the current utilization of distance learning in the post-secondary education arena, particularly in hospitality management programs. It questions program directors in two and four year post-secondary hospitality management programs to determine the respective differences in distance learning activities. Specific areas of interest …

The Reality Gap Of Employee-Management Misperceptions: Comparing United States Air Force Services Squadron Members To Their Private Sector Counterparts, Michael Christopher Rakoczy Jan 1999

The Reality Gap Of Employee-Management Misperceptions: Comparing United States Air Force Services Squadron Members To Their Private Sector Counterparts, Michael Christopher Rakoczy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This exploratory study examined employee-management misperceptions in the United States Air Force Services career field. The "reality gap," as defined, is the misperception of workers needs or wants by management. Employee and manager surveys from 1946, 1980, 1987, and 1991 which demonstrate this phenomenon are examined to establish the validity of the reality gap, the length of time it has existed, and the full ramifications of the extent of the gap. The reality gap is then shown as the precipitating factor toward employee dissatisfaction, leading directly to employee turnover. All of this is framed within the context of Management by …

Ethical Climates In Lodging Operations: An Exploratory Study Of Management Perceptions, Todd Isaac Weinstein Jan 1999

Ethical Climates In Lodging Operations: An Exploratory Study Of Management Perceptions, Todd Isaac Weinstein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the role of ethics in lodging organizations. Managers working at five different properties constituted the survey sample. The study examined management perceptions as measured by the Ethical Climate Questionnaire (ECQ). This instrument, used in previous research on moral reasoning, is designed to assess the perceptions of respondents based on three categories in two separate dimensions: ethical criteria (egoism, benevolence and principle) and loci of analysis (individual, local, and cosmopolitan). Each category comprises a separate ethical climate. Results from the ECQ were compared to various demographic variables such as gender, age, years of management experience, and number of …

Feedback Linearization And Adaptive Control Of A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System, Wenhong Xing Jan 1999

Feedback Linearization And Adaptive Control Of A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System, Wenhong Xing

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, it is exhibited that although, the aeroelastic system is not input-state feedback linearizable, a partial linearized representation of the system in dimension three can be obtained. Based on this partially linearized representation, a new inverse controller was derived and simulation results show that control of pitch angle and plunge displacement can be accomplished; Then, adaptive output feedback control law is examined. For the synthesis of the controller, it is assumed that only pitch angle and plunge displacement are measured. A canonical state variable representation of the system is derived for the reconstruction of the state variable. According …

Automated Stenosis Quantification In Coronary Arteriograms, Yu Zhang Jan 1999

Automated Stenosis Quantification In Coronary Arteriograms, Yu Zhang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Computer-assisted techniques have been shown to be useful in estimating the diameter and cross-sectional area of coronary artery lesions. In this study, two different strategies are employed for identification of artery contours, i.e., scanning and tracKing The scanning approach is accomplished by a canny edge detector. The edge tracking approach is in favor due to its low variability and fast analysis time. Given a start point and search direction, a tracking process automatically detects the arteries edge. From the edge points, a quantitative analysis process calculates the arteries diameter and percent diameter stenosis. As the software runs within a second, …

The Use Of Continuum Models For Conducting Both Linear And Nonlinear Analyses Of Lattice Structures, Simon Yi Luk Jan 1999

The Use Of Continuum Models For Conducting Both Linear And Nonlinear Analyses Of Lattice Structures, Simon Yi Luk

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Large structural projects, such as lattices for framing tall buildings or space purpose can result in huge finite element models. The use of continuum methodology for conducting both linear and nonlinear analyses of lattice structures in finite-element models results in significantly fewer degrees of freedom than discrete finite-element models, which individually model each structural element. Hence, the use of continuum models can result in a considerable reduction in computational effort with a corresponding savings in cost, at least during early 1990s when Pentium computer was not available. Now, it can still be a good design method especially for tall buildings …

Timing Is Everything Almost: An Analysis Of Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under The Elms" In Terms Of Its Success, Janet Catherine Alicesun Jan 1999

Timing Is Everything Almost: An Analysis Of Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under The Elms" In Terms Of Its Success, Janet Catherine Alicesun

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms has proven itself a play worthy of praise. This thesis traces the specific elements which illustrate that this theatrical work, having gone beyond the audience for which it was written in 1924, continues to be rightfully considered a success seventy-five years after its creation. Unlike Robert Brustein in Theatre of Revolt and Eric Bentley in Thinking About The Playwright, who classify and compare all of O'Neill's work in their role as professional critics, this thesis examines and reflects on this one work as an individual entity unto itself; This analysis surveys the prevailing literary, …

Black And Blue: A Metaphoric Criticism, Jacquelyn A Luongo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

First, the purpose of this study is to investigate the ways in which blues lyrics apply rhetorical invention, specifically metaphor. Analysis of a sample of songs from the Blues Hall of Fame first explores how classical rhetorical devices are utilized in blues lyrics; Secondly, through metaphoric criticism the unique idiom of the blues reveals a strong trend towards self-abasement. And finally, despite intensified racial awareness of genre of folk (blues) music it is not a closed communicative act, but through the utilization of archetypal metaphor, a universal one.

The Disability Press: A Wheel Still In Spin, Cindy Schwartz Mccoy Jan 1999

The Disability Press: A Wheel Still In Spin, Cindy Schwartz Mccoy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study, exploring the messages of the disability press, also utilizes Marxist theory to explain empowerment in the disability community. Although Marxism has significant value for explaining disability oppression, Marx's theory of internal relations, describing an interconnected web of organizational structure and the accompanying relationships, sheds light on the political nature of disability empowerment. A world view characterized by an economic base and social superstructure models an intrinsically enmeshed impairment base and social superstructure model of disability. The covers and cover stories of Mouth, Mainstream, Ragged Edge, and New Mobility magazines are catalogued and a representative sample is analyzed in …

Gender Tragedy In George Eliot's "Mill On The Floss", Elizabeth Anne Nielsen Jan 1999

Gender Tragedy In George Eliot's "Mill On The Floss", Elizabeth Anne Nielsen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis centers around the gender roles present during the Victorian era and how George Eliot examined these roles in Mill on the Floss. She did so through her representations of Tom and Maggie Tulliver and by examining how each of these characters deal with the respective roles for his or her gender while living during the Victorian age. Tom strictly follows the imposed roles for his gender, while Maggie refuses to live within the social boundaries set for her own. The societal restrictions and how each deals with them is symbolically represented in their physical descriptions as well. Each …

Midpoint Estimation Applied To The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Gary Wayne Ogren Jan 1999

Midpoint Estimation Applied To The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Gary Wayne Ogren

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Eighty-three college undergraduates estimated midpoints of vertical lines presented in cued (a letter or figure presented below the line), uncued, and inverted T conditions. Subject's mean estimates were near the geometric midpoint in the two cued conditions, and significantly above the midpoint in the uncued and inverted T conditions. Mean estimates in the inverted T conditions were significantly above those in the uncued condition. These displacements are discussed in relation to previous midpoint estimation findings and theoretical explanations of the vertical-horizontal illusion. The midpoint estimation task is evaluated as an investigative tool in studies of geometric-optical illusions, and recommendations for …

Exploring Age-Related Changes In Creativity, Diane Villa Jan 1999

Exploring Age-Related Changes In Creativity, Diane Villa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effects of aging on creativity using a laboratory task involving combining assigned parts and categories into novel and practical items was explored. Older adults demonstrated equivalent creativity to that of young adults. Measures of working memory and processing speed were also administered. Older adults did not perform as well as younger adults. Results indicate that reducing the demands on processing capacity enables older adults to perform as well as younger adults on creativity tasks.

Amerikan Dreams: Dialogues With White Supremacists, Pete George Simi Jan 1999

Amerikan Dreams: Dialogues With White Supremacists, Pete George Simi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following is an ethnographic study of white supremacy. Using a cultural studies approach, I focus on ideology and how members of the openly white supremacist Army of Israel (AOI) practically accomplish aspects of their ideology on a daily basis. Further, I juxtapose the articulations of white supremacy by members of the "extreme" right with more "mainstream" culture, situating the AOI's virulent form of white supremacy within a pattern of thinking and behavior that exists on a continuum embedded within the larger culture, including our political and economic institutions, everyday practices and unconscious (Ansley 1997; Feagin and Vera 1995; Kovel …

Fifteen minutes prior to each match 24 NCAA division 1 male tennis players completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 and the Profile of Mood …

Self-Stabilizing Network Orientation Algorithms In Arbitrary Rooted Networks, Shivashankar Gurumurthy Jan 1999

Self-Stabilizing Network Orientation Algorithms In Arbitrary Rooted Networks, Shivashankar Gurumurthy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Network orientation is the problem of assigning different labels to the edges at each processor, in a globally consistent manner. A self-stabilizing protocol guarantees that the system will arrive at a legitimate state in finite time, irrespective of the initial state of the system. Two deterministic distributed network orientation protocols on arbitrary rooted, asynchronous networks are proposed in this work. Both protocols set up a chordal sense of direction in the network. The protocols are self-stabilizing, meaning that starting from an arbitrary state, the protocols are guaranteed to reach a state in which every processor has a valid node label …

Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons And Aldehydes In Las Vegas Air, Linhong Jing Jan 1999

Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons And Aldehydes In Las Vegas Air, Linhong Jing

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The observed concentrations of the monoaromatic hydrocarbons and aldehydes show significant correlations within the various monoaromatic hydrocarbons, and within the various aldehydes as well as between the two groups of compounds. Moderate or good correlations between observed concentrations of target analytes, monoaromatic hydrocarbons and aldehydes, and other pollutants, CO, NO, NO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} were also found. These observations are consistent with vehicle emission as a major source of monoaromatic hydrocarbons and a primary source of aldehydes in ambient air; CO normalized concentrations were used to infer the occurrence of photochemical reactions in atmosphere. There are significant negative correlations between CO normalized concentrations …

Sorption And Desorption Of Selenium In Cement Formulations, Elizabeth Ann Johnson Jan 1999

Sorption And Desorption Of Selenium In Cement Formulations, Elizabeth Ann Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Twenty-seven cementitious formulations containing three levels of water/solids (45%, 50%, 55%), three weight percentages of silica fume (0%, 10%, 20%), and three weight percentages of clay (0%, 3%, 5%) were evaluated for their ability to effectively sorb selenium at three pH levels (5.9, 8.7, 12.4). A Type V Portland cement was utilized. Distribution coefficients (K{dollar}\sb{\rm d}{dollar} values) determined for each cement formulation ranged from 250-1600 L kg{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar}. Findings suggest that increased water/solids ratios tend to maximize selenium sorption while adding silica fume or 5% clay appears to decrease sorption. A sorption/desorption study was conducted on cementitious formulations containing three levels …

Responses Of Python Regius To Animal Chemosensory Stimuli: Implications Of Foraging Ecology, Albert Klein Jan 1999

Responses Of Python Regius To Animal Chemosensory Stimuli: Implications Of Foraging Ecology, Albert Klein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Python regius is considered to be a sit-and-wait forager and has been reported to attempt capture of live and dead homeothermic prey. This preference for homeothermic prey may be innate and is not dependent on thermal cues. Chemosensory stimuli appear to be the only stimuli which may indicate to P. regius the metabolic group that a dead prey item at room temperature item may belong to. Snakes were exposed to novel odors from homeothermic and poikilothermic animals. Prey Searching Behavior (amount of locomotion) and Information Gathering Behavior (tongue flicking) were observed. Habituation to odors resulted in decreased behaviors. Odors of …

A 3-Dimensional H-Adaptive Algorithm For Groundwater Flow And Contaminant Transport, Lan Li Jan 1999

A 3-Dimensional H-Adaptive Algorithm For Groundwater Flow And Contaminant Transport, Lan Li

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The simulation of contaminant transport through the subsurface is a very useful way to effectively design mitigation methods for cleanup and prevention of the deterioration of groundwater; The GWADAPT3 code is developed using the finite-element method and mesh adaptation to simulate groundwater flow and contaminant transport. The formulation is based on the equations for conservation of mass, Darcy's law for an anisotropic medium, and the time-dependent species transport equations. Petrov-Galerkin weighting of the advection terms provides numerical stability. An explicit time marching scheme is used to solve the transient equations. By utilizing unstructured adaptive meshing, concentration is accurately resolved; Benchmark …

Leakage Gate Current In A Heterostructure Field Effect Transistor, Amit Ranbir Mahajan Jan 1999

Leakage Gate Current In A Heterostructure Field Effect Transistor, Amit Ranbir Mahajan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical formulation for the leakage gate current in a heterostructure insulated-gate field effect transistor (HIGFET) is presented. Three important components of the leakage gate current, namely 2-D tunneling, 3-D tunneling and thermionic emission current, are considered. The conduction band edge profile of the HIGFET is obtained by a self consistent solution to the Poisson and Schroedinger equations. The transmission coefficient for 2-D and 3-D tunneling currents is obtained by solving the Schroedinger equation; The leakage gate currents are obtained as a function of the gate voltage for the AlI-nAs/GaInAs and AlGaAs/GaAs based HIGFET structures. For the AlInAs/GaInAs system, the …

A Comparison Of Fast And Slow Contraction Speeds Using Electromyography, Philip James Melhorn Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Fast And Slow Contraction Speeds Using Electromyography, Philip James Melhorn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in EMG activity existed between fast and slow contraction speeds during isolated, one-armed biceps curls to muscle failure. Participants performed one set of biceps curls to muscular failure on two separate occasions at different contraction speeds. Constant load equal to 75% of 1RM was used for each test. The dependent variables were integrated EMG (iEMG), percent change in mean frequency, and time to muscular failure. Integrated EMG measurements revealed significantly greater muscle activity for the slow contractions (t = 4.76, p {dollar}<{dollar}.001). The time to muscular failure also showed significant differences having the fast contraction speed achieve muscle failure faster than the slow contraction speed (t = 5.23, p {dollar}<{dollar}.001). The comparison of frequency data failed to reach significance. A significant correlation (r =.514) was determined for iEMG and time to muscular failure. These results suggest that differences exist in iEMG and time to muscle failure between fast and slow contraction speeds.

The Aerodynamic Response Of Airborne Discs, Timothy Lewis Mitchell Jan 1999

The Aerodynamic Response Of Airborne Discs, Timothy Lewis Mitchell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A study has been conducted to characterize the flow over a free-flying disc. In this study, three types of discs are analyzed in a series of stationary experiments, and a single disc is analyzed in a spinning experiment. Two dimensionless parameters dominate the experiments, the Reynolds number and the tip speed ratio. The first experiment measured the lift and drag at varying angles of attack on a stationary disc. The second stationary experiment was a unique measurement of the center of lift of a disc as a function of velocity. The third stationary experiment was a tuft test to describe …

A Heuristic Approach For Path Planning For Redundant Robots, George Petrescu Jan 1999

A Heuristic Approach For Path Planning For Redundant Robots, George Petrescu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A new method to solve the trajectory generation for a redundant manipulator is proposed. It avoids traditional computationally intensive methods by relying on the human experience; The proposed method uses a fuzzy logic controller to generate the magnitude of the angles needed to move the end effector to the next target point. The inputs to the controller are the desired displacement of the end effector and the elements of the jacobian matrix that correspond to the considered joint, while the output is the angle magnitude of the joint needed to reach the target point; An algorithm is used to determine …
