UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this thesis I apply the numeric method, the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS), to solve for the fields create by ion traps in various configurations, such as quadrupole ion traps, linear ion traps, toroidal ion traps, and toroidal surface ion traps. The traps are then designed to maximize desired qualities such as minimization of their anharmonicity, and their ability to shuttle ions. A particular focus will be on the toroidal surface ion trap, as well as its ability to shuttle ions. This trap is planned for future experiments involving measurement of the electron Electric Dipole Moment.

How And Why Foster Care Impacts Maltreated Youths' School Performance, Mallory Constantine
How And Why Foster Care Impacts Maltreated Youths' School Performance, Mallory Constantine
Lincy Institute Events
Youth mistreated within the foster care system are more likely to miss school as compared to non-maltreated peers. A single report of child maltreatment has a rapid and negative effect on school attendance and causes serious, long-term effects on school performance. A report of maltreatment substantiated by the department of family and child services removes a youth from a foster home and places the child in an alternative setting. These disruptions in foster care often result in additional problems with school behavior, achievement, and attendance. This lecture will explore how disruptions in foster care affect school behavior and performance and …
Multihalle Pavilion: The Renovation Of An Innovative, Experimental Structure From The 1970s, Steffen Lehmann
Multihalle Pavilion: The Renovation Of An Innovative, Experimental Structure From The 1970s, Steffen Lehmann
Architecture Faculty Research
This article discusses the significance and challenges of renovating a unique 1970s experimental timber building and iconic structure: the Multihalle Pavilion in Mannheim (Germany), which has the world’s first and largest self-supporting wooden grid shell roof structure. Originally conceived as a temporary structure for the 1975 Federal Garden Exposition, Multihalle uses a lattice grid shell structure with gentle curves, remarkably slim profiles, and a translucent roof. The term ‘grid shell’ refers to a doubly curved surface formed from the lattice of timber with uniform spacing in two directions. Furthermore, this was one of the first buildings in Germany whose plan …

Normrank Correlations For Testing Associations And For Use In Latent Variable Models, Daniel B. Wright
Normrank Correlations For Testing Associations And For Use In Latent Variable Models, Daniel B. Wright
Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education Faculty Research
Pearson’s correlation is widely used to test for an association between two variables and also forms the basis of several multivariate statistical procedures including many latent variable models. Spearman’s p is a popular alternative. These procedures are compared with ranking the data and then applying the inverse normal transformation, or for short the normrank transformation. Using the normrank transformation was more powerful than Pearson’s and Spearman’s procedures when the distributions have less than normal kurtosis (platykurtic), when the distributions have greater than normal kurtosis (leptokurtic), and when the distribution is skewed. This is examined for testing if there is an …

Making College Worth It: Inequalities In Higher Education And How To Solve Them, Katharine Meyer
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Most students who graduate from college go on to earn higher wages, have more employment stability, and enjoy better health. While posted tuitions are high, a “high price, high aid” approach to college pricing means that the average cost of college has actually declined in recent years. Yet, public confidence in higher education is at an all-time low. What explains this tension? Who gains from going to college and who does not? What can colleges do to change perceptions about the value of a college education? This lecture by Brookings Institution scholar Katharine Meyer highlights trends in college enrollment and …

A Poetics Of Handel’S Operas, By Nathan Link, Jonathan Rhodes Lee
A Poetics Of Handel’S Operas, By Nathan Link, Jonathan Rhodes Lee
Music Faculty Research
Textbooks and program notes summarize the relationship between story and music in opera seria with tidy bullet points: recitatives = action; arias = reflection; ensembles sometimes contribute to a story’s progression, while instrumental pieces typically do not. Nathan Link’s A Poetics of Handel’s Operas dismisses such generalizations as caricatures, going so far as to assert that opera seria is “easily among the most complex forms of storytelling yet devised” (p. 7). The author turns to narratological theory, with occasional forays into opera studies and cinema studies (including film music scholarship), to explain the “semantic decoding” (p. 2) that audiences must …
Addressing Nevada’S Teacher Shortage, Elizabeth Hofschulte Collins
Addressing Nevada’S Teacher Shortage, Elizabeth Hofschulte Collins
National Institute for the Advancement of Education (NIAE)
Teacher shortages are a pervasive problem across the nation. Multiple strategies have been proposed to address this issue. Teacher shortages impact student achievement and learning in addition to organization culture (Castro, 2023; Ronfeldt et al., 2013; Sorensen & Ladd, 2020), making it an important issue (Ingersoll, 2003). While teacher shortages are a national problem, each teacher labor market is different. Consequently, different strategies will be more suitable for different labor markets. Nevada’s teacher shortage is present across P-12 levels of education and in many content areas. Early childhood education is the only area that does not report a teacher shortage …

The Safety Net Should Work For Working Age Adults, Lauren Bauer
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
This lecture focuses attention on a population that is ill-served by the safety net but rarely acknowledged: low-income, working-age adults without dependents or government-determined disabilities. In this lecture, Brookings Scholar Lauren Bauer, a former Special Assistant in the Office of the Secretary at the US Department of Education, argues that a safety net that is inaccessible to ABAWDs (able-bodied adults without dependents) fails to recognize the precarious state of the low-wage labor market or how safety-net programs allow these workers to remain in the workforce. By modernizing the parameters of who qualifies for access to safety-net programs, assistance can be …

“Educational Facials”: A Healing Tool For The Beautiful Struggle, Kari Kokka, Michelle Cody
Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
Critical educators of Color often work to support their students to work toward justice. However, because we live and work in a society imbued with white supremacy, cisheteropatriarchy, and additional systems of oppression, students and colleagues may resist efforts toward equity and racial justice, especially in mathematics education with women of Color instructors. In this paper, two mathematics educators, a Japanese American woman and a Black woman, elaborate a theory of educational facials, first coined by the second author in 2015. The theory of educational facials is an analytic tool for healing from and navigating harmful school climates. The authors …

Nursing 711 Class Projects
The Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom (DIKW) Framework is a foundational model in nursing informatics that helps conceptualize how raw data is transformed into meaningful clinical decision-making. At its core, the framework describes four hierarchical levels: data (raw, unprocessed facts), information (organized and contextualized data), knowledge (synthesized information based on experience and evidence), and wisdom (the ability to apply knowledge in practice to achieve the best patient outcomes). In nursing, this framework is particularly valuable because it mirrors the cognitive processes nurses use to assess, interpret, and act on patient information in real-time clinical settings.
Developing critical thinking is a challenge …
