Over the last 100 years, the Colorado River has been dammed and diverted to "reclaim" the arid west for man's use. In 1946, a Department of the Interior report stated that "Tomorrow the Colorado will be utilized to the very last drop. UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Goldwater's rise to Republican presidential nominee, and the contribution of foreign policy issues to the Arizonan's defeat in the 1964 presidential election. World War II and the Cold War increased the importance of foreign policy considerations in presidential elections, and from 1948 through 1964, every major party nominee advocated the militant containment of communism. Goldwater was an ardent Cold Warrior, who had developed staunch convictions on domestic and foreign matters. As a senator, his unwavering conservatism cast him as a "maverick" among other Republicans; however, …

The Paper Tiger And Its Predecessors: An Ethnologic History Of The American Indian Religious Freedom Act, Daniel Spencer Wall

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The American Indian Religious Freedom Act has proven to be a terrible disappointment for the Indians all across the country. This act presupposed an analogy between Native American ceremonial practices and Euro-American religions, but Native American ceremonies involve a broader range social institutions than Euro-American "religion." Hence, the analogy between Indian ceremonies and Euro-American religions broke down after passage of the act, and Indians failed to receive the legal remedies sought under its provisions. The following is an attempt to address the problems associated with this act by examining the historical development of a Native American rhetoric of religious freedom …

Battle In The Skies: Sex Discrimination In The United States Airline Industry, 1930 To 1978, Cathleen M. Dooley Loucks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The flight attendant occupation in the United States, developed in the 1930s, created new opportunities for women workers, but defined flight attendants as docile, temporary, and easily exploitable workers. Airlines soon discovered that flight attendants provided a marketable image, based on physical appearance. This thesis traces the development of policies, such as marriage bans, age ceilings, weight regulations, and prohibitions against pregnancy, designed to create and maintain this image. In the 1960s and 1970s, flight attendants challenged the legitimacy of these policies using the sex provision of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Gaining support from their …

Quality Judgment: Toward The "Essentially Human" In Ethics And Policy, Kenneth Wayne Johnson Jan 1995

Quality Judgment: Toward The "Essentially Human" In Ethics And Policy, Kenneth Wayne Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes a framework, a component of a larger paradigm, designed to improve the thinking, planning, and acting of individuals within society. It is based upon factors of human existence that most can agree are fundamental to pursuing matters of importance, however disparately we may see them. Assuming that human choice is a function of consciousness and compassion--it argues that insight from ethics and policy studies can be improved if founded upon an understanding of the implications of the full development and use of the essential human capacities that underlie consciousness and compassion: critical and creative thinking; communicating in …

Breakdown In The Broker State: The Cio In Southern Nevada During World War Ii, Richard W Mingus

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During World War II, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and the American Federation of Labor (AFL) fought a bitter jurisdictional dispute at Basic Magnesium, Incorporated (BMI), a defense plant in southern Nevada. While the CIO concentrated on organizing African-American workers, the AFL colluded with plant managers and conservative politicians, including Senator Patrick A. McCarran, in an effort to destroy the industrial union. Following the CIO's victory in a representation election sponsored by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the AFL and its allies used the newly-enacted Frey Amendment, a piece of legislation which sharply limited the Board's authority to …

Dangerous Women, Dangerous Times: Women At The Nevada State Prison, 1890-1930, Donna Crail-Rugotzke

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This work examines the treatment Nevada's female prisoners received from Nevada's press, courts, and the Nevada State Prison from 1890 to 1930. It argues that gender perspectives held by Nevada's criminal justice officials caused them to treat female criminals both benevolently and harshly. This thesis also compares the treatment of minority women with Anglo women and finds minority women also received mixed treatment. Factors used to judge treatment include the sentences women received, how much of these sentences they served, the living conditions they faced at the Nevada State Prison and the conditions of their paroles and pardons.

The Second Gulf War further eroded the …

Self-Interest, National Interest And The Political Leader's Responsibility, Joe Gumiensky Jan 1995

Self-Interest, National Interest And The Political Leader's Responsibility, Joe Gumiensky

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The two major schools of thought on international relations in the United States are the realists and the internationalists (often called utopians). Both have a long history in Anglo-American thinking on foreign affairs but the internationalists have taken a back seat to the realists since World War II. Internationalists have called for international cooperation in the interests of humanity while the realists have emphasized self-interest and national power. An examination of the formation of the Panama Canal Treaties shows that neither school is adequate in explaining how national interest is defined. Instead, national interest is the result of a more …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

But the manner in which a state conceives and conducts its foreign policy is greatly affected by national peculiarities."{dollar}\sp1{dollar} The focus of this thesis is to illuminate the national peculiarities that have put a unique face on American foreign policy. I will examine the two basic tenets, or impulses, that have characterized U.S. foreign policy development: the Jeffersonian, or idealist, impulse and the Hamiltonian, or realist, impulse. My purpose is to show that each impulse …

Grant: "The Tanner Boy" And Reconstruction, Leslie Jonathan Mcnamara

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Reconstruction, as viewed by historians, is usually divided into two distinct periods, "Presidential" and "Congressional," each controlled by a different branch of the United States Government; This approach leaves one major question unanswered: What of Grant, "the tanner boy," and Reconstruction? After all, President Ulysses S. Grant was elected to the office of President of the United States in 1868, and served in that capacity from March 4, 1869, until March 4, 1877, when Rutherford B. Hayes assumed office; Grant: "The Tanner Boy" and Reconstruction answers this question and determines why Grant has been deemed less important than Lincoln, Johnson, …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In 1842 the British Parliament passed the Mines and Collieries Act which excluded women from working in underground mines. The legislation created a gender based, industry-wide segmentation of labor that persisted in Great Britain and the United States for 130 years. Post-World War II social and legal changes created a context from which women reappropriated their choice to seek jobs as underground coal miners. Women's representation in the industry increased into the 1980s, peaking at between eight and eleven percent of the workforce, but by 1983 their numbers began to substantially deCline After the coal boom of the 1970s ended, …

Differential Oppression, Alienation And Edgework: Keys To Understanding Juvenile Delinquency, William John Miller Jan 1995

Differential Oppression, Alienation And Edgework: Keys To Understanding Juvenile Delinquency, William John Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study tests several tenets of the theory of differential oppression. The theory of differential oppression suggests that the social order is created by adults for adults. Children are forced to conform to this order, despite their possible reluctance, because they lack the power to create meaningful social change. The extended use of power by adults leads to the oppression of children. The theory of differential oppression maintains that delinquency is one possible reaction to oppression; This study also attempts to expand the theory of differential oppression by addressing the role of alienation in the development of delinquency. It suggests …
