Analysis Of The Nebraska Intake Risk Assessment Instrument, Sarah Moore, Anne M. Hobbs

Reports

Under current Nebraska law, a youth in Nebraska should be placed in a secure detention facility for only two reasons: (1) “immediate and urgent necessity for the protection of such juvenile or the person or property of another or (2) if it appears that such juvenile is likely to flee the jurisdiction of the court” (Rev. Stat. § 43-251.01(5)).

In the State of Nebraska, the Office of Juvenile Probation Administration screens youth using the Nebraska Juvenile Intake Screening Risk Assessment prior to making a determination whether to detain the youth. The assessment is referred to in this report as the …

The Road To Undermatch: Understanding The Differences Between White And Latino Student Predictors Of Undermatch, Awilda Rodriguez Jan 2015

The Road To Undermatch: Understanding The Differences Between White And Latino Student Predictors Of Undermatch, Awilda Rodriguez

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

Recent headline-grabbing statistics that Latino high school graduates enroll in college at higher rates than their White peers might lead many to conclude that disparities in college access may be a thing of the past. However, disparities in enrollment persist across institution types as Latino students are overrepresented in the two-year sector, and many who are qualified to attend four-year selective institutions undermatch to less selective institutions at higher rates than their similarly qualified White peers. While past research has shown that Latino students have disparate college choice processes than White students, this study advances the literature on college choice …

Military Service And College: An Exploratory Examination Of Military-Connected Latina/O Undergraduates And Access To Higher Education, José Luis Santos, Monica Christina Esqueda, Dani Molina Jan 2015

Military Service And College: An Exploratory Examination Of Military-Connected Latina/O Undergraduates And Access To Higher Education, José Luis Santos, Monica Christina Esqueda, Dani Molina

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

Approximately 4.2% of undergraduates, or 872,000 students, reported that they had served or were currently serving in the U.S. military during the 2007-08 academic year. Of these students, 13% identified as Hispanic/Latino. Despite a history of college participation, only a handful of studies have examined the postsecondary experiences of students with military service backgrounds. Further, no studies have focused specifically on the experiences of Latina/o undergraduates who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. We address this gap in the research literature. We briefly summarize current research and data on military-connected undergraduates and then explore how …

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Why are some teams perennial darlings of sports journalists while other talented squads get overlooked? Each week during the NCAA basketball season, the Associated Press releases a ranked poll of the top 25 teams. By comparing the preseason and postseason rankings, we construct a measure of how much sports journalists who respond to the poll overrate (or underrate) college teams relative to their actual performance. Using this metric for the 115 NCAA schools that have appeared at least once in the opening or final AP poll in the last 25 years, we examine a range of institutional characteristics that may …

Exposure To Violence, Substance Use, And Neighborhood Context, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright, Gillian M. Pichevsky

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Adolescent exposure to violence and substance use are both public health problems, but how neighborhood context contributes to these outcomes is unclear. This study uses prospective data from 1416 adolescents to examine the direct and interacting influences of victimization and neighborhood factors on adolescent substance use. Based on hierarchical Bernoulli regression models that controlled for prior substance use and multiple individual-level factors, exposure to violence significantly increased the likelihood of marijuana use but not alcohol use or binge drinking. There was little evidence that community norms regarding adolescent substance use influenced rates of substance use or moderated the impact of …

Enlisting In The Military: The Influential Role Of Genetic Factors, Kevin M. Beaver, J. C. Barnes, Joesph A. Schwartz, Brian B. Boutwell

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Given that enlistment in the U.S. military is completely voluntary, there has been a great deal of interest in identifying the various factors that might explain why some people join the military, whereas others do not. The current study expanded on this line of literature by estimating the extent to which genetic and environmental factors explained variance in the liability for lifetime participation in the military. Analysis of twin pairs drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) revealed that 82% of the variance was the result of genetic factors, 18% of the variance was …

Relative Risk In Context: Exposure To Family And Neighborhood Violence Within Schools, Andres Molano, Catalina Torrente, Stephanie M. Jones Jan 2015

Relative Risk In Context: Exposure To Family And Neighborhood Violence Within Schools, Andres Molano, Catalina Torrente, Stephanie M. Jones

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

This paper evaluates the extent to which four different measures of exposure to risky neighborhood and family environments are associated with individual levels of victimization and attitudes supporting the use of aggression among a large and representative sample of Colombian children and adolescents in 5th and 9th grades (about 49,000 participants nested in 1,648 schools and 295 towns) who were evaluated in 2005. With the aid of random intercept models and adaptive centering, we conceptualize and describe the exposure to neighborhood and family violence reported by each participant as a function of their relative position within and between schools and …

Socio-Emotional Development In Latin America: Development Of Children And Adolescents In Adverse Circumstances, Ellyn Bass, Jonathan Santo, Lina María Saldarriaga Jan 2015

Socio-Emotional Development In Latin America: Development Of Children And Adolescents In Adverse Circumstances, Ellyn Bass, Jonathan Santo, Lina María Saldarriaga

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

A sizable portion of the current research on the socio-emotional development of children and adolescents focuses on negative outcomes of aversive circumstances. However, Lerner (2002) has highlighted the need to explore positive youth development. As such, this special issue aims to explore research on promoting positive socio-emotional development from underrepresented contexts. In doing so, we’ve invited articles on development in adverse circumstances using samples from Latin America, in addition to reports of intervention programs that have shown success and have the potential to be replicated in other settings. Creative programs to address these issues have been implemented at the local, …

Would You Please Stop That!?: The Relationship Between Counterproductive Meeting Behaviors, Employee Voice, And Trust, Joseph A. Allen, Michael A. Yoerger, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Johanna Jones

Psychology Faculty Publications

Purpose- Meetings are ubiquitous in organizational life and are a great source of frustration and annoyance to many employees in the workplace, in part due to counterproductive meeting behaviors (CMBs). CMBs include engaging in irrelevant discussion, complaining about other attendees, arriving to the meeting late, and other similar, disruptive behaviors. Consistent with conservation of resources theory, the purpose of this paper is to examine the potential resource draining effect of CMBs on two key workplace attitudes/behaviors, employee voice and coworker trust.

Design/Methodology/Approach- We used Amazon’s MTurk service to recruit a sample of full-time working adults from a variety of industries …

The Study Of Torture: Why It Persists, Why Perceptions Of It Are Malleable, And Why It Is Difficult To Eradicate, Erin M. Kearns Dec 2014

The Study Of Torture: Why It Persists, Why Perceptions Of It Are Malleable, And Why It Is Difficult To Eradicate, Erin M. Kearns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Why does torture persist despite its prohibition? Scholars, policymakers, and the public have heavily debated this topic in the past decade. Yet, many puzzles remain about the practice of torture. Scholarship on torture spans academic disciplines, which adds diversity in perspectives brought to these questions but also can lead to redundancy and stunted progress in research on the issue as a whole. This article assesses the state of the multidisciplinary literature on torture in counterterrorism with specific focus on why democracies torture despite prohibiting it, how public perception of torture is malleable, and why so few countries are able to …

Penny For Your Thoughts? The Protective Effect Of Youths’ Attitudes Against Drug Use In High-Risk Communities, Emily M. Wright, Abigail A. Fagan, Gillian M. Pichevsky Dec 2014

Penny For Your Thoughts? The Protective Effect Of Youths’ Attitudes Against Drug Use In High-Risk Communities, Emily M. Wright, Abigail A. Fagan, Gillian M. Pichevsky

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Individual-level attitudes about drugs are strong predictors of substance use among adolescents, and aggregate-level community norms regarding deviancy and drug use may influence youth attitudes as well as their drug use. This study examined the direct effects of neighborhood norms about deviance, disadvantage, immigrant concentration, and residential stability on youths’ attitudes about drug harmfulness as well as their variety of past month substance use. The moderating effect of community norms on the relationship between youth attitudes and drug use was also examined. Results suggest that community norms favorable to deviance and drug use reduced youth’s attitudes that drugs were harmful. …

Hispanic Entrepreneurship In Nebraska: Trends And Economic Profile, Lissette Aliaga-Linares Dec 2014

Hispanic Entrepreneurship In Nebraska: Trends And Economic Profile, Lissette Aliaga-Linares

Latino/Latin American Studies Policy Briefs

The growth of the Hispanic population in Nebraska was accompanied by a significant increase in Hispanic entrepreneurship at the beginning of the 2000s. From 2002 to 2007, the 3,065 Hispanic-owned businesses constituted a small but dynamic and resilient segment of business growth in the state. Did participation in self-employment decrease for Hispanics after the economic crisis of 2008? What are the characteristics of Hispanic-owned businesses and Hispanics business-owners in Nebraska? Do some of these characteristics reveal social or economic barriers that could prevent these businesses from succeeding?

Analyzing Shakespeare’S Plays In A Network Perspective, Vikas Thotakuri Dec 2014

Analyzing Shakespeare’S Plays In A Network Perspective, Vikas Thotakuri

Student Work

Networks are popular models for representing interactions between entities in systems, such as in sociology, bioinformatics, and epidemiology. The entities in the networks are represented as vertices and their pair-wise interactions are represented as edges [1]. Many network metrics such as degree centrality (number of connections of an entity) and betweenness centrality (number of shortest paths passing through the entity) have been developed to rank the entities according to their importance [7] [10].Social networks are generally modeled on only one type of relation. Groups are open-ended, which means the number of participants and the time frame are not finite. Time …

Learning Disabilities And Delinquent Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Comparison Of Those With And Without Comorbidity, Mary K. Evans, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Peter Simi Nov 2014

Learning Disabilities And Delinquent Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Comparison Of Those With And Without Comorbidity, Mary K. Evans, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Peter Simi

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research is inconclusive on whether adolescents with learning disabilities (LD) engage in more delinquency than adolescents without such deficits. Mixed results may result from a failure to account for the effects of co-occurring disabilities. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examines delinquency among adolescents without disabilities to youth with LD, Attention Disorder Symptoms (ADS), and comorbid LD/ADS. Results indicate no significant differences in property offenses, or alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use; however, youth with LD reported significantly more violence than non-disabled youth. Findings illustrate the heterogeneous effects various disabilities have on delinquent behavior. Future research and …

Perceptions And Practices Of Student Binge Drinking: An Observational Study Of Residential College Students, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Michael A. Johnson

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Professionals have debated the use of the term binge drinking over the past couple of decades, yet little attention has been paid to college student perceptions. We explored how students at one university qualitatively defined binge drinking; whether their own definitions coincided with those adopted by researchers; and whether students' own definitions varied according to their behavior. The most common definition provided by studesnts included a description of the consumption of a large, non-specific, amount of alcohol. Only half of the students who, by standard definition, participated in binge drinking in the previous 30 days actually identified their behavior as …
