Unemployment In Omaha In Relation To The Armour Closing, Kenneth Root, John P. Zipay

Publications

On September 29, 1967, Armour and. Company announced that effective six months from that date, the Omaha Armour plant would be closed, displacing a labor force of approximately 2, 200 workers. This statement, announcing the closing of the third meatpacking firm in Omaha within the past two years, was startling and indicative of far- reaching consequences for Omaha, its people and economy. Numerous social agencies, along with the Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Employment Service, became involved in joining together in a united effort through the development of their own organization-- ACT, the Armour Coordinating Team. Omaha Trade Area Study No. 05: Omaha Spheres Of Influence, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve, Donald W. Lea

Publications

In nearly all cases, a city represents the focal point of a large area which it dominates. As distance away from the city increases the influence of the city decreases until a point is reached where another city of similar size exerts more influence. The purpose of this study is to establish and discuss the major area of dominance for Omaha.

Social Cohesion In Omaha, George W. Barger

Publications

"How are you feeling today?" a physician asks, and the answer to that question can become the basis for a serious analysis of the general well-being of the individual. Similarly, we now ask the question: "What makes a community?" and state that the answer can lead us to important levels of analysis into the nature of the ongoing social order.

Discussion is limited to two of the three large centers because this is the initial year for the opening of Westroads. Other shopping centers surveyed were Southroads, Skag-Way, GEM, Gulf Mart, and the Center.

Geographic Background Report No. 01: Omaha's Agricultural Core Region, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve Aug 1967

Geographic Background Report No. 01: Omaha's Agricultural Core Region, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve

Publications

One of the critical problems in the delineation of the Omaha Trade Area to be solved by the geographer is the selection of the agricultural hinterland of Omaha. A series of maps, based on the 1959 and 1964 Census of Agriculture reports were developed. These basic maps were correlated with known data concerning agricultural shipments to the Omaha market. The result was the definition of an agricultural core region centered on Omaha.

Need-For-Approval And Physical Versus Social Reality Effects On Judgemental Shifts, Melvin Ronald Blonsky Aug 1967

Need-For-Approval And Physical Versus Social Reality Effects On Judgemental Shifts, Melvin Ronald Blonsky

Student Work

Since the recent emergence of conformity research, few investigations have attempted to relate judgmental shifts to both relevant personality dimensions and different psychological situations, i.e., physical and social reality. The E studied the effects of need-for approval, internal versus external locus of reinforcement, pressure, and physical versus social reality on judgmental shifts. A completely crossed-factorial design with two levels of each factor was used. The criterion was the mean number of judgmental shifts, with the latter being defined as a shift in judgment from an initial position about a stimulus object to an alternative position. The Ss were 160 female introductory …

Omaha Trade Area Study No. 02: An Analysis Of Telephone Calls, Newspaper Circulation, And Correspondent Banks, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve Aug 1967

Omaha Trade Area Study No. 02: An Analysis Of Telephone Calls, Newspaper Circulation, And Correspondent Banks, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve

Publications

There are many limitations and statistical uncertainties in making a full interpretation of the Omaha Trade Area, but we plan to go as far as we can to bring together the commonly used indicators that show the sphere of influence of a major trade center. A number of indicators, such as retail sales, newspaper circulation, correspondent banks, grain shipments, etc., will be mapped individually. Then, for the final analysis, a composite map will be constructed to show the area of overall dominance by Omaha.

Socialization To The Parental Role: A Study Of Reactive Norms, Don Stanley Ecklund Jul 1967

Socialization To The Parental Role: A Study Of Reactive Norms, Don Stanley Ecklund

Student Work

The interplay of social theory and social research is the most important attribute of the present day scientific study of human behavior. On the one hand, the scientist as theorist is interested in generalizations, and on the other hand, as a researcher he is interested in testing his hypothesis so that he is assured that what he reports is empirically valid. The effective social scientist does not aim to be strictly a theorist or an empiricist, but seeks to meaningfully combine both theory and research in a way that enhances scientific knowledge. In the following pages of this thesis, such …

Social stratification belongs to the central core of classical sociology. Sociologists, along with other social scientists, have repeatedly shown that every known society is stratified. Social strata may be clearly defined (as in caste societies) or loosely defined (as in industrialized societies).

Religious Preference And Worldly Success: A Comparison Of Protestants And Catholics, James W. Crowley Jun 1967

Religious Preference And Worldly Success: A Comparison Of Protestants And Catholics, James W. Crowley

Student Work

The problem, of theory construction toward a sociological understanding of the religious-economic relationship has relied to a great extent upon the work of a German social scientist, Max Weber.1 Historical observations made by Weber, which described a meaningful relationship between Protestantism and modern industrial capitalism,2 stimulated scholars from a number of fields to continue investigation of this relationship. The Weberian thesis advanced the position that religious and economic phenomena within a society were mutually interdependent. More specifically, Weber was concerned with the 'economic ethics of a religion'3 in relation to the economic institution. This relationship was considered …

Undergraduate Occupational Images And Their Relationship To Selection Of Academic Majors, William E. Macdaniel Apr 1967

Undergraduate Occupational Images And Their Relationship To Selection Of Academic Majors, William E. Macdaniel

Student Work

The term "stereotype" was coined by columnist Walter Lippman who used it originally to refer to rigid and standardized pictures in the minds of people which persist because they provide the individual with a consistent picture of the world in which he lives and to which he must adjust; any effort to change the stereotype thus became an attack upon the world of the individual to be resisted with emotional intensity. Since its inception the term has come to be utilized in a variety of contexts but there is a tendency for each user to redefine it in relation to …

Factors Influencing The Development Of Omaha, Lawrence A. Danton

Publications

This report is a short overview of the dominant factors which have influenced the development of the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) in the past and will, no doubt, continue to influence the Omaha SMSA for many decades. The primary emphasis is on the tangible aspects involved in the city's development. Included among these is a consideration of the geographic variables from the standpoint of physical and human resources. These were the primary determinants in the early development of Omaha and will continue to play a major part in the future of the city. Another area of inquiry deals …

Omaha Unemployment Feasibility Study: Final Report, Larry D. Barnett, Kenneth Root, George Helling

Publications

The research reported here was designed to test the feasibility of a practical approach to the reduction of unemployment, particularly among Negroes.

The need for the particular kind of emphasis used in this approach was recently stated by the director of the U.S. Employment Service in pointing out the need to obtain " more understanding of the things that make the community tick, that keep it from solving its problems, and that lead to the discovery of the real barriers to coordination..."

The Changing Population Of The Omaha Smsa 1860-1967 With Estimates For 1970, John P. Zipay

Publications

During the Twentieth Century, the growth of population in the Omaha SMSA has been greatest in the post-war period. In the decade between 1950 and 1960, for example, the growth approximated 25 per cent. Much of this increase has resulted from cycles of residential construction in the fringes of the urbanized area, a situation known as urban sprawl. This sprawl has taken place in each of the three counties comprising the SMSA, but most significantly it has occurred in the territory west and south of the city of Omaha. A considerable portion of the population of the SMSA now exists …

The Potential Additional Supply Of Labor Available To The Omaha Smsa: Summary, Lawrence A. Danton

Publications

The purpose of this study is to determine from the best information available the potential supply of labor available to present and prospective employers in the community composing the Omaha SMSA. In doing so certain well established trends provide the starting point. First is the basic long-term shift in the industry employment patterns of the United States. That is, with the long term industrialization of the U.S. economy that has been taking place since the Civil War, there has been a continuous shift from agricultural to nonagricultural employment. This trend is still continuing and can be expected to do so …
