Favorability As Influenced By Frequency Of Exposure To Black And White College Seniors, Michael R. Baum Aug 1971

Favorability As Influenced By Frequency Of Exposure To Black And White College Seniors, Michael R. Baum

Student Work

Zajonc's (1968) "mere exposure" effect was replicated by measuring change in favorability toward black and white college seniors. Following a preexperimental selection of the five most neutral slides for each race by sex category, 40 experimental and 40 control group subjects rated ten black and ten white slides on a pre- and a posttest. The experimental treatment consisted of ten exposure sequences of the 20 slides, whereas the control group performed an inverted alphabet printing task. A repeated measures analysis of variance, conducted on the subjects, favorability ratings for both the pre- and the posttests, supported the hypothesis that a …

Favorability As A Function Of Exposure, Race, And Initial Affective Rating, Kenneth W. Nikels Aug 1971

Favorability As A Function Of Exposure, Race, And Initial Affective Rating, Kenneth W. Nikels

Student Work

Zajonc (1968) proposed that repeated exposure to a stimulus is a sufficient condition for the enhancement of an attitude toward it. The "mere exposure" hypothesis is of such generality that it has many far-reaching implications, one of which is the consequences of biracial experiences. Integration of schools, housing, and employment all seem to be partially based upon Zajonc's hypothesis, as are Black Studies courses and Black media exposure. The underlying assumption of each of these examples is, in part, that biracial exposure will produce more favorable racial attitudes.

Group Discussion Versus Persuasive Speech In Changing Behavior, George J. Sullivan Aug 1971

Group Discussion Versus Persuasive Speech In Changing Behavior, George J. Sullivan

Student Work

There has been much research concerning attitude change, but few studies examining concomitant changes in behavior. Those studies that have studied behavioral changes have produced inconsistent results The present study was directed at exploring the relationship between different methods of changing behavior. Forty-six undergraduate students were assigned to either a control, persuasive speech, general discussion, or problem-solving discussion conditions. Experimental conditions were measured by two dependent variables: the number of volunteers (behavioral intention) and appearance at a meeting the following day (overt behavior). With regard to behavioral intentions, persuasive speech did not differ from controls; both types of discussion were …

Student Work

"A particular method of inspecting data is known to all scholars as the geographic method, based on charting the limits or range of phenomena, features, or traits that have a localized distribution on the earth." Geographers have long been concerned with the distribution of phenomena, whether they be species of trees, refugees, cities, land use, resources, glaciers, farms, ethnic groups, religions, or a myriad of other examples, and distributional analyses are fundamental to the discipline of geography. During the infancy of geography as a discipline, the studies of distributions were mainly descriptive, but as the subject grew and became, more …

The Struggle For Redefinition: The Church Of The Nazarene, Jerry D. Hull Jun 1971

The Struggle For Redefinition: The Church Of The Nazarene, Jerry D. Hull

Student Work

This study will provide an analysis that goes beyond any sketchy reference given in an introduction to sociology class for college freshmen. The effort presented in these pages will be to reveal what it is like to be a member of the Church of the Nazarene in the 1970’s. Descriptions of that involvement will come from official organizational publications, historical documents, observations, end a series of intensive interviews. The writer, as a sociologist, by using tools of that profession, will attempt to provide an additional level of interpretation of what it means to be a Nazarene. Other insights, gained as …

Changing Attitudes By Means Of Classical Conditioning, Larry R. Smeltzer Jun 1971

Changing Attitudes By Means Of Classical Conditioning, Larry R. Smeltzer

Student Work

As knowledge of attitude change processes has grown, a wide variety of theoretical analyses have been developed to integrate portions of this knowledge and to guide further research. Many theorists argue that attitude change and formation in the "real world" are produced by the fundamental mechanisms of classical conditioning (Kiesler, Collins, and Miller, 1969) but little research has been done to support such a theory.

1970 First Count Census Data: Owner/Renter Occupancy, By Race, For Douglas County, Nebraska, John Nye, Frederick Adams

Publications

Statements about the relative proportions of blacks and whites owning their homes are not infrequently stated in dogmatic fashion, even though not supported by "hard data." One possible use of the data contained in this report is to test hypothetical statements about race and home ownership. The data herein are all derived from Bureau of the Census computer tapes -- it will be assumed here that the available census figures approximate "reality. "

The Influence Of Specific Physical Features On Leisure Time Patterns, Mary Jane Moran Mar 1971

The Influence Of Specific Physical Features On Leisure Time Patterns, Mary Jane Moran

Student Work

Modern societies have commonly been defined by their technological advancements. These advancements have been blamed for the vice as well as the virtues that are exhibited in society. Indeed these advancements have changed life styles, modes of interaction, and patterns of behavior. As a corollary to this development, leisure patterns have also changed; not only in time allotted, but in terms of financial resources available, behavior exhibited, and values defined. Individuals perceive leisure as part of the day’s events rather than as "time left over."

1970 First Count Census Data: Population And Housing Characteristics For Douglas County, Nebraska, John P. Zipay Jan 1971

1970 First Count Census Data: Population And Housing Characteristics For Douglas County, Nebraska, John P. Zipay

Publications

Changes in Omaha population from 1960 to 1970 have been more areal than real. While significant spatial changes of population may be noted, the rate of population growth during the decade can only be described as moderate. This is a conclusion from initial output from the U.S. Bureau of the Census' 1970 First Count computer tapes.

The census computer tapes provide population and housing data in more detail and in finer geographic areas than the traditional printed reports. In addition, since they are the medium through which the printed reports are generated, they provide valuable advance data to census users.

Early Childhood Centers In Metropolitan Omaha, Mildred Hill Oct 1970

Early Childhood Centers In Metropolitan Omaha, Mildred Hill

Publications

Do we as communities recognize the importance of education--early educational experiences? The number of day care and early childhood educational experiences in the metropolitan area would suggest that as a community, we have miles to go and promises to keep if we are to enlarge upon and foster the potential of each child. Our leadership for the next generation will be the product of today's cradle. Early childhood experiences can contribute immeasurably to the cognitive growth of young children. This city needs to be aware of what experiences are now avail able and to see how it can foster the …

A Hierarachy Of Residential Neighborhoods Determined By Blight Conditions: The Case Of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joseph W. Preusser Sep 1970

A Hierarachy Of Residential Neighborhoods Determined By Blight Conditions: The Case Of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joseph W. Preusser

Student Work

The purpose of this study is twofold. In the first place, there is a relative lack of geographical research devoted to the residential sections of cities. This is regretable since residential land-use is predominant in most urban areas. Secondly, there has been very little study of blighted areas by geographers. The majority of the work carried out on this subject has been mainly the product of sociologists and land economists.

A Study Of A High Delinquency Area, Margaret Ensminger Grabill

Student Work

This is a report of an ecological study of delinquency in a Chicago neighborhood having the fifth highest rate of delinquency compared with the 75 other neighborhood communities in the city. Ecology, broadly defined, is the study of the interrelationships between organism and the immediate environment in which it lives. In sociology, some ecological studies have been concerned with total urban areas. Others have investigated smaller areas such as neighborhoods or census tracts. The unit areas are compared with one another in terms of certain characteristics considered to be the independent variables such as housing, income, and mobility and certain …

Some Aspects Of Socio-Economic And Community Factors In Planning Urban Freeways, Kwame Annor Jan 1970

Some Aspects Of Socio-Economic And Community Factors In Planning Urban Freeways, Kwame Annor

Publications

Urban freeways have many Impacts on their users and on the communities that they traverse or bypass. Consequently numerous interest groups become Involved in determining freeway locations. Decision makers at the state and federal levels must weigh monetary and non-monetary consequences as seen by the highway agency and, in addition, must consider the Interests and demands of other public bodies, organizations, and individuals, before reaching their decisions. A similar weighing must be applied by decision makers at the local level before they approve or object to proposed plans. As a result, decisions are difficult, time consuming, and involve many value …
