The Nebraska Teacher Pipeline: Trends In Perceptions Of Preparedness Of Novice Teachers, Cassandra A. Destefano Feb 2023

The Nebraska Teacher Pipeline: Trends In Perceptions Of Preparedness Of Novice Teachers, Cassandra A. Destefano

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The increased attrition in the teacher workforce has policy makers at state and national levels attempting to fill vacancies from a candidate pool that is drying up. Particularly of interest is the percentage of beginning teachers who are leaving the profession early in their careers. Researchers have examined elements of preparation or induction programs in relation to teacher effectiveness to understand needs of preservice and novice teachers. Elements such as required coursework, clinical experiences, mentoring programs, and professional development have been studied. Some studies have examined preparedness in relation to student achievement or supervisor appraisals of novice teachers. Researchers have …

Mathematics Capital In Mathematics Education, Frances E. Anderson Feb 2023

Mathematics Capital In Mathematics Education, Frances E. Anderson

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This dissertation explores the reimagination of mathematics education through a Bourdieusian perspective. The conceptual framework includes Bourdieu's well-defined terms: capital, field, habitus, and doxa. A thorough review of mathematics education documents finds that mathematics education has not yet considered, mathematics capital, from a Bourdieusian lens. More, examined documents reveal that key variables, mathematics teaching and learning experiences, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics mindset, and cultural capital, interact. In this examination, cultural capital emerges thematically through all texts. Next, six mathematics teachers with dual degrees in mathematics and education are interviewed. Data analysis included a process of inductive and deductive coding. In these, …

The Theorizing Of Terrorism Within Criminology, Daren Fisher, Erin M. Kearns Jan 2023

The Theorizing Of Terrorism Within Criminology, Daren Fisher, Erin M. Kearns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Objectives. While terrorism studies were once castigated as atheoretical and unempirical, criminology has been well suited to apply theories of crime to terrorism and to then test those theories with rigorous methods and robust data. The present study takes stock of how criminologists have theorized about terrorism and tested those theories over time in 13 of the discipline’s leading journals. Methods. The study systematically examines theoretical framing, hypotheses, methodological approach, focus within criminology and criminal justice, and policy recommendations in terrorism-focused articles. Results. While terrorism has become more central within top journals, sparse attention has been paid to many criminological …

Rogue Entrepreneurship, Russ Mcbride, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark Jan 2023

Rogue Entrepreneurship, Russ Mcbride, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

We suggest a new category of “rogue entrepreneurship,” that describes entrepreneurial activity where the core business idea violates established or expert consensus, to be contrasted with “conforming entrepreneurship,” where it does not. There are large entrepreneurial rents hidden behind a bulwark of expert consensus that predicts doom for a venture based upon a rogue and unlikely claim. The “rogue” cases, where the predominant assessment context is different from the entrepreneur’s, result in broad skepticism against the entrepreneurial claim. We explain what rogue entrepreneurship is and how it works.

“What important truth do very few people agree with you on? A …

“Migrants Are Citizens Too!”: Everyday Acts Of Citizenship And The Lived Experiences Of Venezuelans Across The Andes, Mauricio Palma-Gutiérrez Ed. Jan 2023

“Migrants Are Citizens Too!”: Everyday Acts Of Citizenship And The Lived Experiences Of Venezuelans Across The Andes, Mauricio Palma-Gutiérrez Ed.

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

Amid one of the largest ongoing cross-border migration processes in the world, Venezuelans living across the Andes are often categorized as non-citizens by the governments of the countries they reside in. Full access to their rights is limited by dominant legal technologies of population governance, centered on positioning individuals as subjects in/of nation-states, under different political /juridical statuses instrumental to consolidate objectives of ‘migration management’. Yet, by embracing diverse, and meaningful acts of citizenship, many have found creative ways to perform citizenship in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile; allowing them access to some rights that otherwise could …

How Chile's Welcome Turned Sour, Cristián Doña-Reveco Jan 2023

How Chile's Welcome Turned Sour, Cristián Doña-Reveco

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Immigration to Chile has grown considerably since the end of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in 1990. Until mid-2017, political debates about immigration— including refugees and asylum seekers in mixed migratory movements—lacked a sense of urgency, but that began to change in the second half of the year with the rapid increase of arrivals from Venezuela. Chile initially welcomed Venezuelan refugees and migrants, more so than other recent immigrant groups, but the five-fold growth of this population led to major changes in policy and increasingly negative public attitudes. These attitudes have been fomented amid a continuing triple-headed crisis: the political fallout of …

Exploring Remote Work In Nebraska, Josie Gatti Schafer, Tara Grell

Publications

Nebraska ranks 37th in the country for the rate of persons that report working from home (12%), according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2021. Nebraska’s low rate of those that work from home, compared to other states, is likely a function of the work most people do in Nebraska. In Nebraska, more people work in low wage compared to high wage jobs, according to previous research from UNO CPAR. Low wage jobs, in 2021, are defined as below the median income for all workers, or approximately $41,500. “Low wage” jobs are more likely to …

According to 2021 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 7% of Nebraska households do not have access to a computer and 6% of Nebraska households have access to a computer but no internet. Although recent efforts suggest there is momentum and government action at both the federal and state levels to address lack of broadband (Hammel, 2023; Newman, 2023), this still leaves a considerable number of Nebraskans without access to reliable broadband in the meantime. Furthermore, broadband access is moot if Nebraskans do not have access or cannot afford technology and the cost of internet in the …

Hispanic, Latine, Latinx How Monolithic Terminology Can Amplify And Erase Millions Of Voices, Isabel Soto-Luna Jan 2023

Hispanic, Latine, Latinx How Monolithic Terminology Can Amplify And Erase Millions Of Voices, Isabel Soto-Luna

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The use of the term Hispanic in the U.S. has long been used as a catchall for what is a remarkably diverse group of people. Often incorrectly interchanged with the term Latine, many do not understand why the term, along with others like Latine, and Latinx, is both important and problematic. The way people identify is incredibly personal and can be a result of a variety of experiences. Hispanics and Latines (the U.S. Census counts these groups as one) make up 18.7% of the U.S. population with non-Hispanic African Americans comprising 12.4% of the population (Jones et al., 2021). While …

Diverse College Students' Cultural Background And College Persistence, Kerrie Devries, Jonathan Santo, Juan Casas Dec 2022

Diverse College Students' Cultural Background And College Persistence, Kerrie Devries, Jonathan Santo, Juan Casas

Psychology Faculty Publications

Tinto (1975) created a college persistence model, emphasizing institutional academic and social integration, that continues to guide U.S. university retention strategies. This longitudinal study followed 584 college Freshman from diverse backgrounds, testing for group differences in the relationship that Tinto’s key constructs have on college persistence, over time, for U.S.-White, U.S.-minority, and immigrant-origin groups. We found significant positive associations between Academic Integration and Intentions to Persist for all ethnic groups, but group differences in Social Integration and Intentions to Persist. Additionally, Intentions to Persist was a significant predictor of actual persistence for all groups, suggesting predictive power overall.

Politics Of Problem Definition: Comparing Public Support Of Climate Change Mitigation Policies Using Machine Learning, Junghwa Choi, Wesley Wehde, Romit Maulik Dec 2022

Politics Of Problem Definition: Comparing Public Support Of Climate Change Mitigation Policies Using Machine Learning, Junghwa Choi, Wesley Wehde, Romit Maulik

Public Administration Faculty Publications

Public support is a key contributor to successful policy adoption and implementation. Given the urgency of climate change mitigation, scholars have explored various determinants that affect public support for climate change mitigation policy. However, the relative decisiveness of these factors in shaping public support is insufficiently examined. Therefore, we deploy interpretable machine learning to understand which factors, among many previously investigated, are most decisive for structuring public support for various climate change mitigation policies. In this paper, we particularly look at the decisiveness of problem definition for shaping public support among various factors. Using U.S national survey data, we find …

Becoming Human: A Theory Of Ontogeny Michael Tomasello. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2019 Pp. 392., Benjamin Gregg

International Dialogue

No philosophical question is older than What are we, we humans? Michael Tomasello contributes a splendid, empirically based answer to this hoary debate in Becoming Human, with a programmatic subtitle, A Theory of Ontogeny. We humans are an evolved organism with a capacity to create culture only by means of which we can realize aspects of our biological selves—and just as our biology can realize aspects of our cultural selves. That is, our biology evolved in ways that released in us capacities for “culture” that, in turn, released in us biologically relevant capacities, with “enormous and cascading phenotypic effects”—but effects …

Structures Of Loyalty: A Comparative Study Of Jewish And Palestinian Evangelicals' Acquiescence To Fundamentalist And Authoritarian Values, Anders P. Lundberg, Kristian Steiner

International Dialogue

This is a qualitative comparative study of two evangelical movements in Israel and in the West Bank: the Israeli Messianic (IM) movement and the Palestinian Evangelical (PE) movement. Through interviews on how informants understand the Middle Eastern conflict, our aim is (1) to compare the prevalence of fundamentalist/authoritarian (F/A) values in the IM and PE movements and (2) to understand how a particular socio-political context —Israel and the West Bank—might affect the acquiescence to a F/A mindset amongst the two movements. To accomplish this, we created a F/A construct that measures five values: literalism, social withdrawal, authoritarian aggression, authoritarian submission, …
