2021 Year In Review, Leonard And Shirley Goldstein Center For Human Rights - University Of Nebraska At Omaha
GCHR Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The UNO Goldstein Center for Human Rights bears the burden, like other academic programs and human rights organizations, of not only exploring human rights in theory but of actually researching and making public human rights abuses. This leads us down some dark paths in our classrooms and publications. Human rights matter for real individuals and their families. In 2021, year two of Covid-19, pressing human rights issues have come close to home here in Omaha, Nebraska. The year began with a raging public health emergency and an attempted insurrection to overthrow the results of a democratic election in the United …

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is committed to fostering the academic and scholarly pursuits of faculty, staff, and students. The Limits Of The Ethnographic Turn, Bharat Ranganathan
The Limits Of The Ethnographic Turn, Bharat Ranganathan
Religion Faculty Publications
This article reflects on the ethnographic turn in recent comparative religious ethics (CRE). Comparative religious ethicists should be lauded because they privilege engagement with non-Western intellectual sources. Such engagement is important since it undermines the erroneous view that non-Western sources are either soft or are part of someone else's commitments and therefore irrelevant. Yet some recent comparative work stops at merely describing these non-Western sources, moving ethics away from its normative tasks. If CRE is to remain relevant to broader conversations in moral and political theory, comparative religious ethicists should perform two tasks: they should evaluate the object under consideration …

Staff Perspectives Regarding The Influence Of Trauma On The Intimate Partnering Experiences Of Adolescent Mothers In Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Heidi Adams Rueda, Kwynn M. Gonzalez-Pons
Social Work Faculty Publications
Adolescent girls in foster care are disproportionately vulnerable to pregnancy and parenthood. These experiences of motherhood might be partially attributable to experiences of trauma, including sexual trauma. Trauma, particularly related to domestic violence and sexual abuse, have been linked to subsequent struggles in intimate relationships, such as dating violence or engagement in unsafe sexual behaviors. Although some research has begun to investigate experiences of trauma on relationships, there has been a lack of focus on intimate relationships in general and how they have been influenced by past and/or current traumatic experiences. The present study draws on 12 interviews with program …
Skyfall: The "Aliens Sequence" In Monty Python's Life Of Brian, Robert Cousland
Skyfall: The "Aliens Sequence" In Monty Python's Life Of Brian, Robert Cousland
Journal of Religion & Film
Despite its brevity and science fiction genre, Terry Gilliam's "aliens sequence" in Monty Python's Life of Brian functions in at least three ways: It is a brilliant parody of Star Wars and other space epics. It addresses concerns that were of profound significance for the religion of Jesus' day and, finally, and it significantly challenges the Christian premise of a divinely ordained purpose underlying Jesus' life.

Gchr 2020 - A Year Not To Be Forgotten, Leonard And Shirley Goldstein Center For Human Rights - University Of Nebraska At Omaha
GCHR Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
If there was ever a year to be dispatched early and forgotten, 2020 may be the one. Almost unimaginable twelve months ago, the novel coronavirus pandemic has transformed our lives. This “Year in Review” that I write to you as Executive Director of the Leonard and Shirley Goldstein Center for Human Rights, is soaked in human tragedy. Almost two million people are confirmed dead across the globe from Covid-19. In the United States we are approaching 350,000 deaths. As Wall Street soars, suffering disproportionally affects the most vulnerable amongst us – the elderly and the poor. Human Rights issues abound. …

Using Bourdieu To Answer Spivak: On The Study Of Historical Subaltern Religious Practices, Curtis Hutt
Using Bourdieu To Answer Spivak: On The Study Of Historical Subaltern Religious Practices, Curtis Hutt
International Dialogue
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, in her 1988 publication “Can the Subaltern Speak?,” famously challenges the ability of scholars—educated and operating within the dominating power structures of oftentimes European colonizing transnational political and religious movements—to ever grasp subaltern religion. This skepticism logically extends to the work of historians investigating the obscured religious traditions of past cultures that have been overlooked, overwhelmed, and suppressed. In this paper, I lay out a restrained strategy inspired in part by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and based upon my own historical work for circumventing some forms of historical blindness that conceal subaltern pasts. In conclusion, a …

Teaching Hierophany Through Film And Film Through Hierophany, Marc Yamada
Teaching Hierophany Through Film And Film Through Hierophany, Marc Yamada
Journal of Religion & Film
Courses that deal with cinematic representations of the sacred often focus on the experiences of characters in the film, relegating the viewer to the position of a passive witness to the reorienting effects of cinematic hierophanies. These types of courses do not take full advantage of the power of the cinematic medium to transform the way viewers understand the ontological and temporal structures they use to anchor themselves in the “profane” world. Based on my undergraduate course Cinema and the Sacred, this article outlines ways to allow students to experience the full transformative effects of cinema. As is the case …

Who Is Like God? The Deer Hunter As Angelic Allegory, Nicholas J. Schaser
Who Is Like God? The Deer Hunter As Angelic Allegory, Nicholas J. Schaser
Journal of Religion & Film
Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter utilizes Christian contexts and biblical motifs in order to present an allegory in which Michael (Robert De Niro) represents an angelic being. While Michael displays powers that parallel those of biblical angels, his lack of religious reverence and divine self-perception lead to a metaphorical fall in Vietnam. Michael’s friend Nick (Christopher Walken) is also an allegorical symbol for imperiled humanity in need of salvation. When Michael is unable to rescue Nick from a Russian roulette table in Saigon, Cimino’s film emerges as a theological statement about the problem of human violence and the necessity for …
