2003 Bethsaida Field Report, Rami Arav
Field Reports
The purpose of this season was to clarify and retrieve more information on several issues that were unsolved during past seasons and were needed for completing the final report on Stratum 5 for Bethsaida volume IV. This season of excavation took place only in Area A (the city gate area).
Scripture On The Silver Screen, Adele Reinhartz
Scripture On The Silver Screen, Adele Reinhartz
Journal of Religion & Film
My course on the Bible and film, and my own fledgling research in the area, are based on two related assumptions. The first is that movies both reflect and also shape our views, norms, and attitudes. The second is that the majority of the movie-going audience has little direct knowledge of, or contact with, the Bible, and thus has no prior experiences against which to test its cinematic utilization. The testing of these assumptions I leave to social scientists, who are better equipped than biblical exegetes to measure and analyse the impact of the movies on their viewers. My aim …
Religion And Film: Capturing The Imagination, Gordon Matties
Religion And Film: Capturing The Imagination, Gordon Matties
Journal of Religion & Film
Most of my students watch more movies than they read books. Some students choose not to register for Tuesday evening courses because Tuesday is "cheap movie night." Movies have captured the imagination, even if M. Darrol Bryant overstates the matter, suggesting that "the act of going to the movies is a participation in a central ritual of this culture's spiritual life." In my course, "Religion, Film and Popular Culture", I try to offer …
The Struggle For Redefinition: The Church Of The Nazarene, Jerry D. Hull
The Struggle For Redefinition: The Church Of The Nazarene, Jerry D. Hull
Student Work
This study will provide an analysis that goes beyond any sketchy reference given in an introduction to sociology class for college freshmen. The effort presented in these pages will be to reveal what it is like to be a member of the Church of the Nazarene in the 1970’s. Descriptions of that involvement will come from official organizational publications, historical documents, observations, end a series of intensive interviews. The writer, as a sociologist, by using tools of that profession, will attempt to provide an additional level of interpretation of what it means to be a Nazarene. Other insights, gained as …

A Comparative Study Of The Readability Of The King James Version Of The Bible And The New Standard Revision Of The Bible, Dwight Robert Miller
Student Work
For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the relative reading ease of different versions of the Bible, the majority of the arguments made by the various factions have been based upon limited observation, and in no instance has experimental evidence been presented to support the contentions of any group.
