The purpose of this study is to better understand the phenomenon of corruption in the former member states of the Soviet Union and the implications for a successful completion of democratic transition and consolidation. The complex political and economic situation is constantly changing, and although well over a decade has passed since the official collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the future of the majority of the fifteen former Soviet Union countries remains - at best - questionable and uncertain. In June 1998, the Board of Education of the School District of Philadelphia passed a resolution mandating that all students demonstrate citizenship competencies by completing a service-learning project for promotion to grades 5 and 9 and for high school graduation. This resolution, part of Children Achieving–– Philadelphia’s education reform plan––launched an initiative supporting service-learning practice on an unprecedented scale for one school district.

Four years later, the District had formed partnerships with over 250 community agencies, trained 2,400 teachers in the philosophy and methodology of service-learning, and leveraged approximately $20 million per year in financial and in-kind resources to support …

The study examined the interactive influence o f the affective qualities of a problem and a problem solver’s emotional intelligence (El), an individual difference in the ability to perceive, express, integrate, understand, and regulate emotion, on the quality and quantity of solutions generated to two different ill-structured problems. Controversy has shadowed Christian missionary activity among Native American peoples from its beginnings in the 1500’s to the present day. During the last two centuries, the churches have competed for the souls of Indians on reservations, in the press, in Congress and in the federal courts. At stake were access to the reservations and the use of federal funds in religious institutions. These jurisdictional conflicts reflected and reinforced the contentious relationships between Protestants and Catholics in the United States. The present study was designed to test Folger and Cropanzano’s (1998) Fairness Theory as it pertains to perceptions of fairness and accountability in rejection letters. This study was a partial replication of Gilliland, Groth, Baker, Dew, Polly and Langdon (2001), which examined the impact of Fairness Theory variations in rejection letters on perceptions of fairness, recommendation intentions, and reapplication behavior. Participants in this study were applicants rejected in the first stage of the selection process with a large, Midwest corporation. Principles of Therapeutic Riding, Animal Science 3309, is a service- based learning course that gives undergraduates the opportunity to participate in hippotherapy sessions. This course first offered in 1998, has been held for 12 semesters. A total of 233 students from over 15 majors have been trained in this discipline. Advanced Therapeutic Riding, Animal Science 4001, is a continuation of the Principles class that allows students to participate in the sessions and serve in leadership roles. This class has been active for 8 semesters and has included 51 students.

The Montana State Prison (MSP) Wellness Program was designed to provide educational and service activities to male inmates for the purpose of improving health status and increasing knowledge on significant health issues relevant to contemporary society. The Applied Health students at Montana Tech of the University of Montana aided in the delivery of the MSP Wellness Program. These services and activities were designed to meet the goals of Healthy People 2010, a national prevention agenda written in a collaborative fashion by governmental agencies and highly regarded health educators.

In the past 30 years researchers have examined the impact of heightened stress on the fidelity of eyewitness memory. Meta-analyses were conducted on 27 independent tests of the effects of heightened stress on eyewitness identification of the perpetrator or target person and separately on 36 tests of eyewitness recall of details associated with the crime. There was considerable support for the hypothesis that high levels of stress negatively impact both types of eyewitness memory. Meta-analytic Z-scores, whether unweighted or weighted by sample size, ranged from -5.40 to -6.44 (high stress condition–low stress condition). The overall effect sizes were -.31 for …

This report by OLLAS assistant director Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado is part of a developing research and outreach project with the Center for International Trade and Security at the University of Georgia. It involved working with Mexican government officials to design and implement national responses to international agreements and obligations to ensure command and control of critical nuclear, biological, and chemical materials in Mexico. Dr. Benjamin-Alvarado conducted a comprehensive survey, which he administered in Argentina and Cuba previously, later in 2005 to assess Mexican export controls.

We studied temperature dependence of complex capacitance, impedance, and polarized Raman spectra of single crystal Cs2Nb4O11. First, we observed a sharp-shaped peak at 165 ^oC in the complex capacitance, then found drastic changes in the Raman spectra in the same temperature range. Utilizing the pseudosymmetry search of structure space group, we attributed the observed anomalies to a structural change from the room temperature orthorhombic Pnn2 to another or- thorhombic Imm2. We also measured room temperature polarized Raman spectra in different symmetries of normal vibrations and assigned high wavenumber Raman bands to the internal vibrations of NbO6 octahedra and NbO4 …

Rural and non-metropolitan public-use and general aviation airports play a critical role in the economic development of communities in agricultural states and states with dispersed populations. Not only do they serve as a vital link to markets and resources for both agricultural and non-agricultural businesses operating in the community, small airports provide needed transportation options for area residents. These airports also perform an important function in providing needed health and medical transport services in non-metropolitan locations. Airports can be described as critical “public assets” with needed services to the local community (Penney 2003).

This research updates research done in 1972 on representational roles in the Nebraska Legislature. This research also examines one aspect of legislative decision-making based on previous studies regarding sources of cues used by legislators when deciding how to vote on bills. A survey of incumbent Nebraska Legislators reveals changes since 1972 in the predominant representational role orientation chosen by senators. They survey also sheds light on the sources of cues most relevant to these legislators and how cue-taking relates to representational roles.

The percentage of African Americans on the rosters of major league baseball teams is at a 30-year low, while the percentage of Caucasian players in the major leagues has remained relatively stable. Research indicates that the number of African Americans will continue to drop. The Welcome Theory uses several theoretical perspectives to explore why African Americans have turned away from baseball and embraced other sports, such as basketball. The theory has implications for designing sports programs that socialize youth into sports.

Background. The reasons behind the development of future pathology in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency are unknown. This is due to the lack of appropriate methods to assess functional dynamic knee stability. In this study, we investigated the effect of walking speed on the functional dynamic stability of the anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee. We defined functional dynamic stability as local stability or the sensitivity of the knee to small perturbations. The natural stride-to-stride variations that exist during locomotion reflect exactly the presence of these perturbations. Picture this scenario: For Young at Heart, a monthly social and recreational event targeted specifically for senior citizens, students with moderate and severe disabilities worked with Key Club members to plan and cook a dinner for seniors, as well as plan the entertainment for the evening. During the event, students helped prepare the meal, served it, and participated in the social activities. After a successful evening, the students wrote letters to local businesses to solicit funding for the next event. Students and their peer partners composed reflections and planned a celebration. National Macroeconomic conditions are favorable for future expansion of income, employment, and revenue in Nebraska. In particular, the U.S. economy is now in the heart of an expansion expected to persist over the three year forecast period. The principal engine of growth will be a sustained expansion in private sector investment and consumption demand. We present a detailed theoretical study of the magnetic ordering in heavy rare-earth compounds with a face-centered-cubic structure. In addition to the exchange interactions which are counted up to the third nearest neighbors, the effect of the dipolar interactions and magnetic anisotropic effect are also included in our model Hamiltonian. The interactions parameters are obtained from first-principles band-structure calculations by fitting the total energies of different magnetic configurations to the Heisenberg Model. Thus from utilizing the Monte Carlo simulations, we explained the formation of different magnetic structures in the rare-earth compounds.

Neurons in the geniculate ganglion, like those in other sensory ganglia, are dependent on neurotrophins for survival. Most geniculate ganglion neurons innervate taste buds in two regions of the tongue and two regions of the palate; the rest are cutaneous nerves to the skin of the ear. We investigated the expression of four neurotrophins, nerve growth factor (NGF), brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin 3 (NT‐3), and NT‐4, and five neurotrophin receptors, trkA, trkB, trkC, p75, and truncated trkB (Trn‐B) in single sensory neurons of the adult rat geniculate ganglion associated with the five innervation fields. The wealth of literature on stress in the correctional workplace focused on correctional officers, frequently ignoring treatment personnel employed in these same institutions. This study advanced the literature on correctional workplace stress by: (1) testing for differences in workplace stress between correctional officers and treatment personnel, (2) examining personal and environmental factors to determine whether distinct precursors to stress existed for these two groups, and (3) utilizing multiple measures of stress. Self-report survey data from 3,794 employees in ten adult prisons in a southwestern state demonstrated that both groups of employees reported moderately high levels of job stress and stress-related …
