Investigating Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer With Titanium Carbide Mxenes And Slanted Columnar Thin Films, Sean Luke Murray

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This work investigates the mechanisms to manipulate and control the magnitudes of Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer (NFRHT) using two-dimensional materials and nanostructured surfaces. NFRHT occurs when the geometrical features of the radiating objects or the separation distance between interacting bodies are comparable to or lower than the characteristic thermal radiation wavelength. NFRHT magnitudes surpass the blackbody limit by several orders of magnitude due to phenomena such as photon tunneling and new modes of energy transfer, like surface polaritons. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how material properties and surface nanostructures affect NFRHT.

The first part of this work examines the …

The Value Of Knowledge And Its Problems, Kevin Patton Aug 2024

The Value Of Knowledge And Its Problems, Kevin Patton

Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation answers the three value problems in epistemology. These three problems require an answer as to how knowledge is more valuable 1) than mere true belief, 2) any of the proper subsets of knowledge, and 3) in kind than that which falls short of knowledge. The methodology used to provide an answer to these problems relies on the arguments put forth in a rarely discussed paper from Ward Jones. In short, the Jonesian approach can be summed up as the view that epistemic axiology and analysis ought to be kept separate. The Jonesian framework instead looks outside of the …

Making Sandwiches: A Novel Invariant In D-Module Theory, David Lieberman Aug 2024

Making Sandwiches: A Novel Invariant In D-Module Theory, David Lieberman

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Say I hand you a shape, any shape. It could be a line, it could be a crinkled sheet, it could even be a the intersection of a cone with a 6-dimensional hypersurface embedded in a 7-dimensional space. Your job is to tell me about the pointy bits. This task is easier when you can draw the shape; you can you just point at them. When things get more complicated, we need a bigger hammer.

In a sense, that “bigger hammer” is what the ring of differential operators is to an algebraist. Then we will say some things and stuff …

Exploring Intraplate Seismicity In The Midwest, Alexa Fernández Aug 2024

Exploring Intraplate Seismicity In The Midwest, Alexa Fernández

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Intraplate seismicity represents a notable occurrence within the stable North American Craton. This research explores the potential sources of stresses that could reactivate older faults and influence seismic activity within this region. Among these sources, the enduring impact of the last glacial period is considered, which includes continued glacial isostatic adjustments (GIA). During GIA the lithosphere rebounds due to the retreating ice, and the forebulge caused by far-field flexure in response to the glacial load, collapses. This results in significant faulting, fracturing, and seismic activity associated with the deglaciation phase. The adjustment of the lithosphere manifests as both near surface …

Microbial Transfer And Cross-Contamination In Milling Facilities And Pathogen Survival In Milled Products And Baking Mixes, Aryany Leticia Peña-Gomez

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Wheat-based products, traditionally considered low-risk due to their low moisture content, have been involved in numerous foodborne outbreaks in recent decades. Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) present in these products have caused significant numbers of hospitalizations and massive product recalls. The microbiological quality of flour is highly dependent on the incoming wheat, which is vulnerable to contamination from field to milling. Once pathogens are present in flour, they can survive for extended periods. Implementing strategies to mitigate the risk of pathogen contamination throughout the wheat processing chain is critical.

This study evaluated the distribution of E. coli …

Semigroup Well-Posedness And Finite Element Analysis Of A Biot-Stokes Interactive System, Sara Mcknight

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

The coupling of a porous medium modeled by the Biot equations and a fluid has many biological applications. There are numerous ways by which to model the fluid and to couple the porous medium with the fluid. This particular model couples the Biot equations to Stokes flow along the boundary, through the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman conditions. We address semigroup well-posedness of the system via an inf-sup approach, which along the way requires consideration of a related but uncoupled static Biot system. We also present the results of finite element analysis on both the uncoupled Biot system and the coupled system.
