During the summer of 1897, at the University of Chicago, I began a morphological investigation of certain species of Alliuin, being attracted chiefly by the often quoted polyeinbryony of A. tricoccum Ait. My results in the case of this species indicate that if polyembryony occurs at all, it is very rare. Besides A. tricoccum, I examined more or less thoroughly A. cernuum Roth, and A. Canadense Kalm, with the same general result. Seventy-five embryo-sacs of A. tricoccum were examined at the stage in which both egg apparatus and antipodal cells ought to have been found. At first thought it would seem that these were primary phytogeographical divisions, but a comparison with the vegetative covering of other continents proves the contrary. Considered as a phytogeographical feature, the North American forested area is an entity ; from a floristic or formational standpoint, it may be analyzed into several distinct portions of widely separated relationship. A preliminary report on experiments with forage crops. Covers sorghum, cow pea, hairy vetch, Canada field pea, non-saccharine sorghums, soybean, and rye.

Summary

Permanent grass pastures may be successfully substituted by certain annual forage plants.

A quick-growing variety of sorghum affords pasture fully equal to native or cultivated grasses.

Sorghum has the advantage of affording more forage per acre, and in being green and succulent throughout the entire summer. Its disadvantage consists in the necessity of plowing land for each crop.

One acre of sorghum will furnish pasture for ten cows twelve days.

(1) Acclimatization of plants differs from that of animals since plants are introduced for cultivation and thus kept to a certain extent within control, while animals are liberated and controlled only by natural enemies or unfavorable conditions.

(2) Animals and birds are distributed from one continent to another, and to islands, either by accidental means or by the direct agency of man. Most animals are intentionally introduced into new regions, cases of accidental dispersion being comparatively rare except among rats and mice.
