Approximation to the Least Root of a Cubic Bernoulli's method of approximating the largest root of an equation
(1) x³ = ax² + bx + c,
with real coefficients, is to use (1) as a scale of relation for the recursion formula A_n = aA_n-1 + bA_n-2 + cA_n-3. Successive A’s are calculated starting from any initial values. Then A_n+i/A_n for increasing values of n approximates that root of (1) which has the greatest absolute value if that root is real. The method here given for …

Twenty years of wheat breeding, consisting chiefly of the isolation and testing of pure lines, has now been conducted at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. It is the purpose of this paper to report the conduct and results of this work. The resulting strains are compared with the best other wheats available from Nebraska and other sources. The effects of a number of cultural practices related to the preparation of seed, seeding, treatment of the growing crop, and harvesting are also presented. Some consideration is given to the experimental technique of the comparative tests.

1. The influence of relative humidity and temperature on the viability of the urediniospores of two Physiologic Forms of Puccinia graminis tritici has been determined. 2. The same general relation between the viability of the urediniospores and the relative humidity and temperature was found, namely, that the lower the temperature the longer the spores retained their viability at all relative humidities, while at any stated temperature the spores were viable the longest at the medium humidities. 3. In pursuance of an investigation of competition among certain shrubs (Rhus glabra, Corylus americana, Symphoricarpos spp.), and between these shrubs and Quercus macrocarpa, it became imperative, for a proper understanding of their behavior, to ascertain just how near the edge of their range they were growing. Ten years ago, while studying the vegetation of semi-arid eastern Washington, interest in root studies was aroused because of the extensive root systems of the native species. Balsamorrhiza sagittata, the first plant excavated, is representative. The strong tap root reaches a depth of six feet, and very numerous branches run laterally to distances of about two feet. Further investigations in several other states showed that extensive root systems are the rule among grassland species. Andropogon haliji, with exceedingly well branched fibrous roots seven feet deep, is representative of many of the dominants. About ninety percent of the more …
