In this note parametric solutions of certain diophantine equations are given. The method of obtaining the solutions is derived from an equation involving the determinants of certain matrices. It will be recognized that the method is a generalization of the method of Euler and Lagrange which depends on forms which repeat under multiplication. The matrices used in this paper must be such that their forms are retained under matric multiplication and addition. When integer values are assigned to the parameters of our solutions we obtain integer solutions of the particular equation under consideration; however not all integer solutions are necessarily …

The problem of expressing an elliptic function in terms of infinite sums of trigonometric functions has been treated by Hermite, Briot and Bouquet, A. C. Dixon and others. In the present paper we treat the same problem from the point of view of Cauchy's residue theorem in function theory, which is also Briot and Bouquet's starting point, but we differ from these authors in that the integrand we use leads to an expansion for an elliptic function which is valid in an arbitrarily wide, but finite, strip of the complex plane, and which contains certain classical results as special cases. …

The final solution of the alfalfa-wilt problem in Nebraska probably lies in the development of resistant sorts that are winterhardy as well as productive. The relative susceptibility to wilt of 40 lots from Turkestan, 10 from France, 6 of Grimm from as many states, and 16 domestic alfalfas are reported on at this time, together with hardiness tests of a few well-known varieties and strains and the more recent introductions from Turkestan and France.

Several productive lines of hard red winter wheat which are highly resistant to both species of stinking smut (Tilletia levis and T. tritici) have been isolated from the Turkey variety. Artificial-smut and stem-rust epidemics and controlled freezing have been found useful supplements to field-performance tests. Differential reactions of the new Turkey selections and a number of hybrid selections and established resistant varieties to collections of bunt from a number of states give definite evidence of the occurrence of mild and virulent physiologic forms of both species. [This article treats briefly, in the chronology of their appearance, the substantive uses of the pronoun of the third person neuter: the English and American game usage, two American colloquial or dialectal usages, and the newest usage, emerging from Hollywood, with its adjectival and nominal derivatives.]

The English pronoun of the third person neuter, it, has established itself as a substantive in various meanings, some of which are so widely current as to augur for them considerable vitality. An enumeration of these substantive uses in American English yields the following-- approximately, I think, in the order of their appearance.

Pheasants, including the Chinese and the so-called English pheasants, with their hybrid the ring-necked pheasant, have been introduced and established in a large area in the northern United States during the past 50 years. During the past 15 years continued importations of these birds into Nebraska, together with the rapid increase of those already established, have built up a large pheasant population in the state, estimated at more than a million birds. This paper reports the probable course of post-glacial forest succession in northern Ohio, as indicated by a study of fossil pollen deposited in the Bucyrus Bog.
