The 4-H Yard Beautification Club work affords boys and girls the opportunity to study trees, vines, shrubs, flowers, and lawns and to grow and care for them. Cherry County (Nebraska) Extension: Historical Documents

The educational program of agricultural extension was conducted in Cherry County during 1940 by the Cherry County Extension Service. 329 families and business firms subscribed $1529.15 for support of the work. The county commissioners provided office quarters at a cost of $258.00 for the year. Other income provided $80.00 additional funds making a total operating fund of $1867.15.

Expenditures for the year were $255.00 for office quarters, heat and light, $89.60 finance committee expense, and $1824.14 for conducting the general program.

The program of work directed special emphasis to F-F-L, Beef Cattle, 4-H and Project club work.

The drought of 1934 was not only the most severe on record for the true-prairie association but was also of the earliest inception.  On June 8, Kincer ('34) stated that "pastures are the poorest ever known, and the hay crop will be extremely short, regardless of future weather."  The stress increased as the summer advanced.  Stoddart ('35) tood advantage of these conditions to investigate the relation of osmotic pressure and water content of prairie plants to environmental factors in the vicinity of Lincoln, Nebraska. On many farms in the Southeast patches of briars and small scrubby growth have been allowed to grow up in pastures, fields, and meadows, where they interfere with good farming. Shrubs have therefore come to be thought of all too often as plants that should be destroyed. The areas they occupy are shrubbed out and burned in an attempt to combat insects and to present an appearance of clean farming. This treatment destroys ground cover and hastens erosion. It deprives wildlife of food and shelter. It reduces the number of beneficial insects but does not exterminate the noxious kinds.

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT: John Deere D TEST A: The manufacturer's representative operates the tractor for a minimum of 12 hours using light to heavy drawbar loads in each gear. This serves as a period for limber up, general observation and adjustments. Adjustments that are permissible include valve tappet clearance, breaker ,point gap, spark plug gaps, clutch and others of a similar nature. No new parts or accessories can be installed without having mention made of it in the report. No data' are recorded during this preliminary run except the time that the engine is operated. All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.
