Physical And Chemical Properties Of Soil Profiles Of The Burchard And Steinauer Series, Henry W. Smith, H. F. Rhoades Jul 1945

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Soil Profiles Of The Burchard And Steinauer Series, Henry W. Smith, H. F. Rhoades

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The purpose of this bulletin is to report an investigation of the soils mapped as types of the Burchard and Steinauer series. Burchard soils are described as nearly mature Prairie soils, and Steinauer soils as Lithosols, by the Division of Soil Survey. The C horizons of soils of both series consist of calcareous glacial drift. A part of the conclusions drawn from the investigation of these soils is based upon observations made in the field in southeastern Nebraska, the remainder upon laboratory data for samples taken by horizons from nine profiles.

A Seven-Year Quantitative Study Of Succession In Grassland, J. E. Weaver, W. E. Bruner Jul 1945

A Seven-Year Quantitative Study Of Succession In Grassland, J. E. Weaver, W. E. Bruner

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The study of plant succession has contributed more than any other single line of investigation to a deeper insight into the nature of vegetation. Earlier studies of succession, especially in grassland, were largely those of the primary sere. But with the utilization of the prairies for grazing, and the abandonment of submarginal land after a short period of cropping, numerous investigations of secondary successions were made. The earlier studies have been discussed by Clements (1916) in "Plant Succession." Sampson's plant succession in relation to range management appeared in 1919. Many of the more recent investigations of subseres in grassland and …

Extent And Longevity Of The Seminal Roots Of Certain Grasses, J. E. Weaver, Ellen Zink Jul 1945

Extent And Longevity Of The Seminal Roots Of Certain Grasses, J. E. Weaver, Ellen Zink

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Grasses possess two distinct root systems. The primary or seminal root system begins development immediately upon the germination of the seed and consists of one to several main roots and their branches, the number varying with the species. The young plant is entirely dependent upon this primary root system for water and soil nutrients. Later, especially during the period of tiller production, a secondary or nodal root system develops from the lower nodes of the parent culm and from the tillers. The seminal roots are often designated as temporary in general texts and even in special books on grasses. Hitchcock …

The Effects Of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, And Pressure On Growth In Chilomonas Paramecium And Tetrahymena Geleii Furgason, D.M. Pace, R.L. Ireland Jul 1945

The Effects Of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, And Pressure On Growth In Chilomonas Paramecium And Tetrahymena Geleii Furgason, D.M. Pace, R.L. Ireland

Papers in Microbiology

The effects of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pressure on animal organisms have been widely studied, but most of the investigations in this field concern chiefly the effects of extreme, especially high, atmospheric pressures on blood changes, respiration, length of life, etc., in Vertebrates.

Very few detailed observations have been made on the relation between oxygen tension or carbon dioxide tension and growth in Protozoa. The few investigations that have been carried out are concerned primarily with the effect of these gases on respiration although some observations have been made on the relation of aerobic and anaerobic conditions and growth in …

The Plains Garter Snake, Thamnophis Radix, In Ohio, Roger Conant, Edward S. Thomas, Robert L. Rausch Jun 1945

The Plains Garter Snake, Thamnophis Radix, In Ohio, Roger Conant, Edward S. Thomas, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The announcement that Thamnophis radix, the Plains garter snake, occurs in Ohio and is not rare in at least one county, will surprise most herpetologists and students of animal distribution. Since the publication of Ruthven's monograph on the genus (1908), almost all authors have followed his definition of the range of this species, giving eastern Illinois as its eastern-most limit. Ruthven (p. 80), however, believed that radix very probably would be found in western Indiana, a supposition since substantiated by Schmidt and Necker (1935: 72), who report the species from the dune region of Lake and Porter counties.

Effects Of Ddt And Other Insecticides On Several Species Of Potato Insects, Roscoe E. Hill Jun 1945

Effects Of Ddt And Other Insecticides On Several Species Of Potato Insects, Roscoe E. Hill

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Field and laboratory tests conducted in Nebraska showed DDT to be more effective than any other material yet tested against potato insect pests. Records were obtained on tuber flea beetles, Epitrix tuberis, potato psyllids, Paratrioza cockerelli, potato leafhoppers, Empoasca fabae, green peach aphids, Myzus persicae, Lygus elisus, Chlamydatus associatus, Aceratagallia uhleri and Macrosteles divisus. DDT remained effective against potato psyllids and potato leafhoppers under field conditions for a relatively long period of time. Populations of certain beneficial insects, such as Nabis spp., Orius spp. and lady beetles were found to be significantly reduced …

Ec1533 Mange And Lice Of Hogs, O. S. Bare May 1945

Ec1533 Mange And Lice Of Hogs, O. S. Bare

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Extension Circulation 1533 is about Mange and Lice that affect Hogs. Mange or scabies is caused by a tiny whitish mite that goes into the skin and lays eggs that produce more offspring. It causes itching, and the animal may want to rub against something very hard. The hair then begins to thin and the skin becomes wrinkly. Lice lay and glue their eggs to the hairs of the hogs and the eggs hatch in 12-20 days.

Charcoal Rot Of Corn And Sorghum, J. E. Livingston Apr 1945

Charcoal Rot Of Corn And Sorghum, J. E. Livingston

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In Nebraska, the charcoal rot caused considerable damage to the 1940 grain sorghum crop in the south central counties, and the following year it caused serious lodging and reduction of yield in both corn and sorghum in all sections of the state. Field observations indicated that some varieties of sorghum were damaged less than others; thus it appeared desirable to test thoroughly all varieties to determine whether any were sufficiently resistant to be recommended for field planting or to be used in a breeding program. It seemed desirable to study the influence of soil environment on infection and the development …

Studies On The Riboflavin Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Apr 1945

Studies On The Riboflavin Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The riboflavin concentrations of twenty-seven kinds of cheeses and cheese spreads were determined by feeding these products to rats whose body stores of riboflavin had been depleted by being fed a riboflavin-deficient diet. Fifteen experiments were made in which 1,223 rats were used. The results obtained varied from 13.5 to 1.2 micrograms of riboflavin per gram of cheese (or spread). The samples of Goat, Velveeta, Mel-0-Pure, and Liederkranz had the highest concentrations of riboflavin while the samples of Cream and Pimento Cream had the lowest concentrations.

Electric Chick Brooding Studies, F. D. Yung, F. E. Mussehl Mar 1945

Electric Chick Brooding Studies, F. D. Yung, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons to be learned from a study of chick brooding is that good results can often be obtained in more ways than one. In carrying on work with electric brooders at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, special attention has been given to such factors as insulation and to other details of design which effect economy of operation and ease of construction. Low cost rather than "cheapness" has been the ideal. The work has been cooperative between the Agricultural Engineering Department and the Poultry Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska.

Poultry Progress: Our Egg Marketing Job, F. E. Mussehl, H. C. Filley Feb 1945

Poultry Progress: Our Egg Marketing Job, F. E. Mussehl, H. C. Filley

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Eggs are one of the products which Nebraska farm families exchange for the necessities and comforts of life. Although values are measured in dollars and cents, the interest of the producers centers in the amount of useful goods and services that the eggs will buy rather than in the price per dozen or per case. Farmers are interested in a fair exchange value because they wish better homes, better schools, better churches, and better communities in general. In the typical Nebraska community, not only farmers but physicians, merchants, mechanics and school teachers are dependent for their income, either directly or …

Yields And Consumption Of Forage In Three Pasture-Types: An Ecological Analysis, R. W. Darland, J. E. Weaver Feb 1945

Yields And Consumption Of Forage In Three Pasture-Types: An Ecological Analysis, R. W. Darland, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Native pastures in eastern Nebraska and adjacent states have undergone profound changes as a result of drought. Bluestems (Andropogon) and associated grasses have been thinned and weakened, although recovery has been marked since 1941. In many pastures they were replaced by western wheat grass (Agropyron smithii) or other invading species. In nearly all, wheat grass now occurs in considerable abundance. Kentucky bluegrass (Paa pratensis), into which many overgrazed native pastures had degenerated, was almost completely killed by the drought, or greatly damaged as in western Iowa. Despite these widespread changes, few studies have been made on the relative yields, preferences …
