Mattamuskeet: A National Wildlife Refuge, Rachel Carson
Mattamuskeet: A National Wildlife Refuge, Rachel Carson
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Mattamuskeet, Pea Island, and Swanquarter-- two on the mainland and one on the outermost barrier beach--are three National Wildlife Refuges in North Carolina that provide winter food and shelter for more than 100,000 waterfowl. Ducks, geese, and swans that in summer scatter across the northern rim of the world from Greenland to Alaska come down the sky lanes in the fall and in these refuges find the conditions they need to survive the hard months of winter.
At Mattamuskeet you can see one of the largest assemblages of Canada geese on the Atlantic seaboard and more of that giant white …
The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Poults, C. W. Ackerson, F. E. Mussehl
The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Poults, C. W. Ackerson, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. Day-old poults were found to contain an average of 1.28 g nitrogen, 0.18 g calcium and 0.15 g phosphorus. 2. Day-old poults were fed equal amounts of a good growing ration for 52 days. Analysis of these poults showed retention of 42.6 per cent of the nitrogen, 23.4 per cent of the calcium and 31.3 per cent of the phosphorus contained in the ration. 3. Retentions of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus were on the same order as those obtained in like feeding trials with chicks.

Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers
Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers
Papers in Microbiology
Very little information is at hand regarding the ability of molds to synthesize riboflavin. Few citations pertaining directly to riboflavin production by true molds are available.2 Pontovich (1943) found as much as 2 mg riboflavin per g of Aspergillus flavus mycelium. Tanner et at. (1945) determined the quantity of riboflavin in the submerged fermentation media of Penicillium chrysogenum. The highest value found was 1. 36 mg per ml. The primary purpose of this study was to screen several hundred isolates, recently obtained from soil, crop residues, and composts, for their ability to produce riboflavin on a wheat bran substrate.

Chincoteague: A National Wildlife Refuge, Rachel Carson
Chincoteague: A National Wildlife Refuge, Rachel Carson
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The national wildlife refuge at Chincoteague, Virginia, is one of the newest in a chain of sanctuaries placed along the flight lanes of the waterfowl. Coming down from the north the principal links of the chain are Parker River, Montezuma, Susquehanna, Brigantine, and Bombay Hook. Then from Chincoteague the links run south, through Back Bay and Pea Island, Mattamuskeet and Cape Romain. Chincoteague, like other waterfowl refuges, is needed because birds migrate, and because in so doing they expose themselves to great dangers.
The migration of birds is one of the ancient spectacles of earth, and one of the most …
Parker River: A National Wildlife Refuge, Rachel Carson
Parker River: A National Wildlife Refuge, Rachel Carson
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is New England's most important contribution to the national effort to save the waterfowl of North America. Many million Americans have a direct stake in the success of this effort: the 2,000,00o waterfowl hunters, the millions who find recreation and esthetic pleasure in observing and photographing the birds, and all those, whom there is no way of counting, who understand the value of preserving wildlife as part of America's natural heritage.
During the several generations in which the United States has been converted from a land preeminently wild and unsettled into an industrial and …

Ec173 Alfalfa And Sweetclover Silage, D. L. Gross
Ec173 Alfalfa And Sweetclover Silage, D. L. Gross
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Extension circular 173 discusses alfalfa and sweetclover silage. Alfalfa and sweetclover are of special value as a livestock feed because of their protein and vitamin A content. When these crops are made into hay they often lose much of their value due to unfavorable curing conditions, and the loss of leaves which contains 75 percent or more of the protein and vitamin A. Second year sweetclover used as hay often causes bleeding disease in cattle unless handled very carefully to prevent spoilage. When used as silage this danger is apparently eliminated.

Suggestions For The Handling Of Certain Mammals, Robert L. Rausch
Suggestions For The Handling Of Certain Mammals, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
For experimental work, it is often desirable to handle the smaller wild mammals more freely than usual methods allow. Howell (Journal of Mammalogy (1937) 18(4): 513) suggests the feeding of pentobarbital sodium in milk or other food. While this may be satisfactory for animals accustomed to captivity, it can hardly be used for those newly captured.
A Method Of Measuring Vigor Of Range Grasses, J. E. Weaver
A Method Of Measuring Vigor Of Range Grasses, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
After several years of intensive study of midwestern prairies, their degeneration under grazing was given careful consideration (Weaver and Fitzpatrick, '32, '34; Weaver and Hansen, '41). It was ascertained that the intelligent use or careless abuse of these grasslands had resulted in pastures and ranges which could logically be grouped into four classes. These were excellent, good, medium, and poor. The first consisted almost entirely of climax grasses and an abundance of nutritious forbs which, as is almost universally found, were of the highest grazing value (Bews, '29: 298). In good pastures many of these persisted, but there was a …
