Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard Jan 1957

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

Recent Advances In Veterinary Entomology1, A.W. Lindquist, E. F. Knipling

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The advances during the last 15 years in our knowledge of the biology and control of arthropod pests of livestock and vectors of animal disease agents exceed those made in any similar period in past history. Before 1942 we relied mainly on rotenone, pyrethrum, the thiocyanates, and the arsenicals for control of lice, ticks, mites, biting flies, and cattle grubs. While effective against some pests under certain conditions, these materials were not practical for wide-scale use and did not meet the public demand for better insecticides. Today we have highly effective and low-cost insecticides such as DDT, lindane, TDE, toxaphene, …

Specificity Of The London-Eisenschitz Wang Force*, Jerrold M. Yos, William L. Bade, Herbert Jehle Jan 1957

Specificity Of The London-Eisenschitz Wang Force*, Jerrold M. Yos, William L. Bade, Herbert Jehle

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The London force between macromolecules immersed in a liquid medium has an interesting property which may be of biological significance. For the purpose of formulating the London interaction, one may represent each macromolecule by a set of electric dipole oscillators of specified polarizability, frequency, and orientation. To consider the simplest case, one may study macromolecules of globular form not in direct contact with each other. (They might be separated by Debyeiuckel- Onsager atmospheres made up of molecules from the medium; then the equilibrium distance between the macromolecules would be regulated by concentration changes in the ionic medium.)' Such a geometrical …

Influence Of Various Factors On Aggregation Of Peorian Loess By Microorganisms, T. M. Mccalla, Francis A. Haskins, E. F. Frolik Jan 1957

Influence Of Various Factors On Aggregation Of Peorian Loess By Microorganisms, T. M. Mccalla, Francis A. Haskins, E. F. Frolik

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Soil structure is important in the attainment of adequate aeration for the aerobic microorganisms whose activities maintain such higher plant nutrients as sulfur, phosphorus, and nitrogen in a highly oxidized and thus readily available state. Good soil structure is also necessary for soil and water conservation, Under Nebraska conditions microorganisms and their decomposition products constitute a major source of soil-aggregating agents. The decomposition of crop residues and plant roots is important in the nutrition of these aggregating microorganisms. Other microorganisms, however, also utilize crop residues and plant roots, and they may decompose the aggregating agents as well, so that the …

Fluorometric Assay Of Free And Bound Coumarin Rn Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Jan 1957

Fluorometric Assay Of Free And Bound Coumarin Rn Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Free and bound coumarin are extracted by autoclaving leaf tissue in water. Free coumarin is determined directly from an aliquot of the water extract diluted in alkali. Additional autoclaving of the extract in concentrated alkali is required for release of the coumarin from the bound form, permitting an assay for total coumarin. Bound coumarin values are then obtained by difference. Results of the assay as applied to four different phenotypes of sweetclover are given.

The Relation Of Spring Bird Distribution To A Vegetation Mosaic In Southeastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard, W. H. Rickard Jan 1957

The Relation Of Spring Bird Distribution To A Vegetation Mosaic In Southeastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard, W. H. Rickard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Climax vegetation is of particular interest for study since it is the oldest and most stable vegetation of a region and should be expected to have a distinctive complement of animals. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the predilection of birds for stands representing climax plant associations in a remnant of native grassland in southeastern Washington.

The grasslands of this region were rapidly converted from grazing use to wheat production beginning about 65 years ago (Daubenmire 1942) and as a result only a few scattered remnants of native vegetation remain today. Associated with changes in vegetation there have …

Gyrodactylus Eucaliae N. Sp. (Trematoda: Monogenea) From The Brook Stickleback, Eucalia Inconstans*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Francis M. Ikezaki Jan 1957

Gyrodactylus Eucaliae N. Sp. (Trematoda: Monogenea) From The Brook Stickleback, Eucalia Inconstans*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Francis M. Ikezaki

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A new species of Gyrodactylus was observed on the skin, gills, and fins of the brook stickleback from the English Coulee, Grand Forks, North Dakota during the summers of 1953-1955. Host-specificity is usually striking in the monogenetic trematodes and since this parasite was not observed on any other species of fish from this body of water or the nearby Turtle River, it was studied in detail and is here described as a new species, G. eucaliae.

Constitutional Law—Separation Of Church And State And The Application Of The First Amendment To State Powers, William S. Dill

Nebraska Law Review

A taxpayer and parent sued to enjoin the Nashville Board of Education from continuing the practice of reading from the Bible each day in the public schools in compliance with a Tennessee statute. The trial court sustained defendant’s demurrer (no cause of action). Held: affirmed, on the grounds that the statute was not in conflict with either the Tennessee Constitution or with the United States Constitution, Amendment I. By decisions before 1868, individuals were not protected against state action in violation of the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution, including the first amendment. The privileges and immunities …

Evidence—The Uniform Business Records As Evidence Act Applied To Medical Records, Howard E. Tracy Jan 1957

Evidence—The Uniform Business Records As Evidence Act Applied To Medical Records, Howard E. Tracy

Nebraska Law Review

In Fries v. Goldsby, decided in December 1956, the Nebraska Supreme Court held, inter alia, that a chiropractor’s permanent record of plaintiff’s history, examination, diagnosis, care, and treatment were not admissible into evidence under the Uniform Business Records as Evidence Act. Because the court treated the chiropractor as an expert in his field, this holding probably applies to other medical witnesses who testify as experts in their fields of knowledge. Thus, the court has seemingly held that the permanent records of physicians, surgeons, and dentists do not fall within the purview of the Uniform Act. This note is …

Jerome Frank’S Attack On The “Myth” Of Legal Certainty, Julius Paul Jan 1957

Jerome Frank’S Attack On The “Myth” Of Legal Certainty, Julius Paul

Nebraska Law Review

One of the significant contributions of contemporary American legal realism has been the discussion of the origins, purpose, and efficacy of legal rules. Some writers have been extremely critical of the worship of legal rules and of the feeling by the lay public that rules can provide exactness and certainty in the law. Jerome Frank has been the most noteworthy exponent of this view, particularly in his pioneer book, Law and the Modern Mind, published in 1930.

Frank would be the last person to deny the existence and the utility of legal rules. Yet, his attack on those writers …

A survey of grades in Engineering Physics I at Kansas State College showed that the inner structure of the course was highly consistent. The correlation coefficient between the average of the first three tests and the final grade was about 0.88. More significantly, valuable prognostic data could be obtained from the final grade in the course. The correlation coefficient between the Engineering Physics I grade and the final grade point average of students who completed the course was about 0.83. Only 21% of the students initially failing the course successfully completed an engineering degree, while about 75% of the A, …
