On A Theorem Of Hölder, Donald W. Miller Apr 1958

On A Theorem Of Hölder, Donald W. Miller

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

A well-known result, due to Hölder [1], is the following: The symmetric group Sn, has outer automorphisms if and only if n = 6. The classical proof of the existence of a class of outer automorphisms of S6, as formulated by Burnside [2], rests in part on the theory of primitive groups and entails extensive computation. In this note we offer a direct method for constructing such automorphisms. The author is grateful to Professor R. H. Bruck for raising this problem and for subsequent helpful remarks.

The New Critics And The Language Of Poetry, C.E. Pulos Mar 1958

The New Critics And The Language Of Poetry, C.E. Pulos

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

One of the most remarkable phenomena in the literary world of the present century has been the revolution in taste accomplished by what has come to be known as "the new criticism." While 1. A. Richards is sometimes looked upon as the founder of this movement, I purpose to show that the imagists were its real founders. The imagists and the school of Richards may, of course, be treated as separate schools. But they may also be regarded, as I propose to regard them, as different phases of the same basic movement.

To include the imagists under the new criticism …

The “Demonic” In Ibsen’S The Wild Duck, Louis Crompton Jan 1958

The “Demonic” In Ibsen’S The Wild Duck, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Ibsen's The Wild Duck has been universally recognized as a masterpiece of modern dramatic art. Two generations of critics, starting with George Brandes and George Bernard Shaw, have admired its powerful ironies and brilliant dramaturgy. Finally, it has been made the subject of a detailed and extremely perceptive analysis by Hermann Weigand, Ibsen's leading twentieth-century exponent, in his study The Modern Ibsen. All have seen it as a curious drama of mixed genre in which elements of satire, comedy, and tragedy exist together in a state of high tension. Beyond this, the critics have gone on to explore some particular …

Satire And Symbolism In Bleak House, Louis Crompton Jan 1958

Satire And Symbolism In Bleak House, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

In Dicken’s Bleak House the nineteenth-century social order is portrayed with a power and vividness elsewhere unmatched in English fiction. Decaying slums with their filthy tenants, a sedately proud but hopelessly outmoded aristocracy, lawyers and clients lost in a fog of legal obfuscation, a confused and silly parliament engaged in a perpetual game of musical chairs; the magnitude of these symptoms of social distress is impressive, and equaled only by the completeness of the failure of those in power to deal with them. Whatever the dramatic weaknesses and confusions of the book, this satirical image of society is communicated to …
