Phyllopod Shrimp Populations Of The Big Alkali Lake Drainage, Nebraska And Their Relationship To Young Pike (Esox Lucius), D. Bruce Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Random sampling with a fine-mesh dip net in the drainage pools south of Big Alkali Lake, Cherry County, Nebraska, indicated a spring abundance of anostracan and notostracan phyllopods, commonly called fairy shrimps and tadpole shrimps. Collections were made during the months of April and May of 1957 and 1958, and specimens were submitted to Dr. Ralph W. Dexter, Professor of Biology, Kent State University, Ohio, for identification. The 1957 collections were fairy shrimps of the species Chirocephalopsis bundyi while those of 1958 were tadpole shrimps', Lepidurus couesi. The presence of L. couesi establishes a new state record for this …

The Results Of Four Years Of Fish Eradication Work With Toxaphene In Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher, Jack L. Dean

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Experimental use of the compound, toxaphene, (chlorinated camphene), as a fish eradicant was first tried in Nebraska during 1956.

During the period from 1956 to 1958 a total of 3,810 acres of water have been treated with emulsifiable toxaphene to remove rough fish populations. Concentration levels ranged from 0.05 p.p.m., to 0.61 p.p.m. The maximum depth of the nine renovated sandhill lakes was seven feet with an average depth of only 4.5 feet. Numerous spring seeps are found in all lakes and bottom deposits were organic muck and sand. The lakes are considered moderately alkaline in the 8.5 - 9.5 …

Habitat Of Red-Backed Vole, Harvey L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

These data are a part of a study of small mammal populations at Cedar Creek Forest, Anoka County, Minnesota. The live-trapping area of 5.0 acres, with 81 traps spaced 52 feet apart, was in a tamarack-white cedar bog. The study extended over a period of 7 years (1949-1955). Trapping periods of five days (four nights) extended from early May to the first part of October. In all, there were 14,580 trap-nights. A total of 428 voles were marked and weighed; data on 25 dead unmarked individuals are also included.

A frequency index was calculated for each station. This index was …

The Waterfowl Councils A Conservation Partnership Jan 1959

The Waterfowl Councils A Conservation Partnership

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

What is a Waterfowl Council?

It's doubtful if many duck hunters know the answer to that question. Yet these Councils are responsible for the planning of many programs that will influence the kind of duck hunting these same sportsmen will have in the future.

Because the activities of the Waterfowl Councils do mean so much to so many people--not only to duck hunters but to the millions of people who get their fun just watching the birds-this circular has been prepared to tell the Council story. Its purpose is to explain the basic waterfowl problem and the current approach to …

Influence Of Spectral Composition Of Light On Cis-Trans Interconversion Of O- Hydroxycinnamic Acid, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz Jan 1959

Influence Of Spectral Composition Of Light On Cis-Trans Interconversion Of O- Hydroxycinnamic Acid, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In a recent report (1) from this laboratory, an improved fluorometric assay for coumarin in sweetclover is described. Briefly, the method consists of opening the lactone ring of coumarin by treatment with alkali, after which the resulting non-fluorescent cis-o-hydroxycinnamic acid is partially converted, by means of ultraviolet irradiation, to the fluorescent trans isomer. Measurements of fluorescence are then made. In the interval between ultraviolet treatment and measurement of fluorescence, the solutions to be assayed must be protected from the usual light of the laboratory, since exposure to such light results in loss of fluorescence, indicating a reconversion of some of …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

I. WHAT IS HOG CHOLERA?

Hog cholera is a deadly, contagious disease that attacks swine only.

The disease is caused by hog cholera virus, an agent so small (1/250,000 of an inch) that it can even pass through a fine porcelain filter.

How do hogs act when they get the disease? They lie around "hiding in their nest," have high fevers, are extremely weak and "sick all over." They have little appetite, and often stand in a "thinking" attitude-motionless, tail relaxed, ears hanging limp, and the head slightly lowered as if in deep thought.

Very few hogs ever recover.

Fleas And Disease1, William L. Jellison Jan 1959

Fleas And Disease1, William L. Jellison

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In the broad field of disease caused by arthropod-borne agents there are many instances wherein the pathogenic organism appears to be well adapted to the vector and may even pass an essential part of its life cycle therein, as do the malaria parasites of man within the anopheline mosquitoes. The pathogen may be carried from stage to stage or even passed from one generation to another through the egg (transovarial passage). These adaptations of parasite to arthropod vector are thought to result from a long host-parasite association. The arthropod, in such instances, is conveniently referred to as a biologic vector …
