Comparison Of Vegetation Of Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills And Loess Plains, J. E. Weaver
Comparison Of Vegetation Of Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills And Loess Plains, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The western edge of True Prairie gives way very gradually on the Loess Plains south of the Platte River to Mixed Prairie of the Great Plains. North of the Platte a similar transition occurs in the valleys and on the slopes of the Loess Hills. But in northern Kansas the True Prairie of the Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills is definitely separated by the Flint Hills Region from its western edge on the Kansas-Nebraska Loess Plains. In this study the vegetation, soils, and other environmental factors of the two areas are described and compared.

Malaysian Parasites Xxxv-Xlix, W. W. Macdonald
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
This is the third Study of the series from this Institute on the external and internal parasites and the biting insects of the Malaysian region. The earlier two volumes were planned and edited by Dr. J.R. Audy, and on his departure from Malaya in the middle of 1959 Mr. W. W. Macdonald continued the work which had been begun and collated and edited the papers in this present Study.
In the two previous volumes (Study No. 26, 1954 and No. 28, 1957) the emphasis was on the taxonomy of Trombiculid mites. In the present volume the emphasis has changed, and …

A Movement West, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
I did not discover that I had any interest in teaching or in academic life until late in my twenties, and then only through a sequence of unrelated circumstances.
I was born in 1917. My parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who came to New York City at about the turn of the century.
At sixteen I enrolled in Brooklyn College, a recently organized, tuition-free, municipal college, then housed in rented office buildings in downtown Brooklyn. It took an hour to get to or from school on the subway. I managed to choose this inconvenient location because this school seemed most likely …
Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxvil. Description Of Schizorchis Caballeroi N. Sp. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), With Notes On Other Parasites Of Ochotona, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Schizorchis caballeroi n. sp. has been described from the collared pika, Ochotona collaris (Nelson), from Alaska, and has been distinguished morphologically from its congeners, S. ochotonae Hansen, 1948, and S. altaica Gvozdev, 1951.
Nine species of helminths have been described 10 dale from North American pikas, O. collaris and O. princeps (Richardson). These mammals are markedly allopatric and do not share any species of helminth. Nematodes of two genera, Eugenuris Shults and Labiostomum Akhtar, 1941, occur in O. collaris as weIl as in palearctic species of Ochotona. This, along with other pertinent information, is taken to suggest that O. …

Trichinosis In The Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835) is a common parasite of mammals in the Arctic. High rates of infection have been recorded in terrestrial carnivores (particularly Canidae, Ursidae, and Mustelidae), but representatives of several other groups, including marine mammals, have been found infected. From existing information, it appears that the natural cycles have at least three ecologicaIIy distinct patterns, described in this note.

Alaska’S Struggle For Statehood, Fred A. Seaton
Alaska’S Struggle For Statehood, Fred A. Seaton
Nebraska Law Review
The signing by President Eisenhower on January 3, 1959, of the proclamation admitting Alaska as the forty-ninth state of the Union, marked the formal conclusion of the longest and most difficult struggle for political recognition and status that any state has fought since the beginning of the Republic. This occasion was all the more notable because the statehood effort, by comparison, was the briefest and the only fully successful phase of a continuing ninety-year effort to provide essential and appropriate governmental institutions for the great northwestern continental area transferred to the United States by Russia pursuant to the 1867 Treaty …
Building A State Judiciary, Mildred R. Hermann
Building A State Judiciary, Mildred R. Hermann
Nebraska Law Review
The fact that Alaska has been able to build a judiciary widely heralded as the best among the fifty states perhaps stems from its chaotic youth. With no territorial judiciary it had nothing to undo, and there was no necessity for compromise. It could build its judiciary without reconciling practices of an already existing judiciary. The first step toward this Alaskan objective was taken at the constitutional convention which convened in the late fall of 1955 to draft a state constitution. This was almost three years before Statehood was achieved. Article IV of this constitution set up the guidelines for …
Income Tax Consequences In The Administration Of Decedents’ Estates, John E. North
Income Tax Consequences In The Administration Of Decedents’ Estates, John E. North
Nebraska Law Review
Post mortem decisions are an essential element in properly effectuating any estate plan. The client’s death does not terminate the opportunity for tax savings. Many testamentary dispositions, hopelessly inadequate from a tax standpoint, have been salvaged by prompt action after the testator’s death. Consider the typical situation: a widow elects to take the statutory share of her husband's estate because the interest passing to her under the will is terminable and will not qualify for the marital deduction. This election has saved widows an untold number of federal estate tax dollars since 1948. However, obvious decisions in connection with inartfully …
The Little Horribles Of A Scrivener, Henry M. Grether
The Little Horribles Of A Scrivener, Henry M. Grether
Nebraska Law Review
The following is a short discussion of selected common drafting problems confronting the scrivener of an ordinary will, excluding tax implications, problems created by renunciation or widow’s election, and problems of invalid provisions because of public policy, the rule against perpetuities and other substantive rules of law. Common drafting errors to be avoided are discussed by way of illustration. These drafting “horribles” have been selected as typical “drafting horribles” because of the frequency with which scriveners have used these unwise provisions.

Probate Procedures Available To Beneficiaries, Daniel Stubbs
Probate Procedures Available To Beneficiaries, Daniel Stubbs
Nebraska Law Review
The purpose of the probate function is to provide for the orderly devolution of property upon the death of the owner after payment of taxes and debts. Usually this is done through the probate court, which is the county court in Nebraska. It is possible to eliminate resort to the probate court in administration by careful planning with an inter vivos trust, or even by the use of joint tenancy. In any event proceedings in the county court are required to determine the inheritance taxes imposed by the laws of Nebraska. This discussion is limited to the performance of the …

Ethical Problems In Probate Matters, Hale Mccown
Ethical Problems In Probate Matters, Hale Mccown
Nebraska Law Review
Ethical standards are in general rigorously observed by the legal profession when they are known and recognized. In far too many instances, however, attorneys fail to recognize an ethical problem in the midst of the technical legal problems with which they are dealing. Probably in no field of practice are there more everyday problems of ethics than in the field of probate. Since a large percentage of probate matters are thought of as nonadversary proceedings, conflicts of interest many times pass unrecognized. This article is limited to a brief consideration of a few of the ethical problems more frequently encountered …

A Trustee In Bankruptcy As A Judgment Creditor, Duane Mehrens

Congress has been attempting to eliminate secret liens under the bankruptcy act for years. The battle has once again been joined over the question of whether a trustee in bankruptcy is a judgment creditor within the meaning of section 3672(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Although Congressional intent appears to clearly indicate that he is, the question has been brought into sharp focus by several recent decisions.

Jurisdiction—Indirectly Affecting Land In Another State By Judgment In Personam, Park L. Shipley
Jurisdiction—Indirectly Affecting Land In Another State By Judgment In Personam, Park L. Shipley
Nebraska Law Review
A husband and wife were residents of Wyoming. In a divorce proceeding in that state, having both parties before it and having jurisdiction over the subject matter of the suit, the Wyoming court granted a decree of divorce to the wife. The decree ordered the husband to deliver to the wife a quit claim deed to property in Nebraska. The husband did not comply with this order. Instead, he left Wyoming and went to the situs of the land in Nebraska and brought a suit there to have the Wyoming decree declared void and to quiet his interest in the …
