Comparison Of Heritability Estimates From Daughter-Dam Regression And Paternal Half-Sib Correlation, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. E. Bradford Jan 1965

Comparison Of Heritability Estimates From Daughter-Dam Regression And Paternal Half-Sib Correlation, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. E. Bradford

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Analysis of 60,000 pairs of daughter and dam first-lactation records expressed as deviations from herd-mate averages for five breeds yielded markedly different heritability estimates from daughter-dam regression than from paternal half-sib correlation. These results suggest that 18% of the within-herd variation is due to genetic maternal effects. The same records analyzed as mature equivalent records and not as deviations but by a sire by herd model did not show this difference. Confounding between year and sire effects probably biased the intraclass correlation estimates upward in the latter analysis, since year effects were not included in the statistical model.

Heritability Estimates When Dams And Daughters Are In The Same And Different Herds, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. L. Hart Jan 1965

Heritability Estimates When Dams And Daughters Are In The Same And Different Herds, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. L. Hart

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The regression of daughter on dam deviations of Holstein first-lactation milk production from herd-mate averages was computed for 38,440 pairs of records made in the same herd and for 10,256 pairs of records where the daughter was in one herd and the dam in another. The corresponding heritability estimates were .42 and .40, respectively, which suggest an environmental covariance of .01 between records of daughters and dams in the same herd. Other analyses were conducted for dams with two daughters with records where 1) both had records in the same herd as the dam, 2) only one had a record …

Differences Among Appraisers In The New York Type Appraisal Program, L. Dale Van Vleck, R. Albrectsen Jan 1965

Differences Among Appraisers In The New York Type Appraisal Program, L. Dale Van Vleck, R. Albrectsen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The purpose of the New York type appraisal program is to attempt to rate type traits objectively. Approximately 34 traits are included, of which 25 are rated by the appraiser and 9 by the herd manager. This paper reports differences among 18 appraisers, including S professional judges, 7 New York Artificial Breeders' Cooperative fieldmen, and 3 other sire selection personnel all of whom rated 38 cows in a single herd. There were statistically significant differences (P ≤ .05) among appraisers for all traits. Average scores of the professionals were different from those of the fieldmen for all except six traits. …

Response Of Sheep And Swine To Treatments For Control Of Ovulation, P. J. Dziuk Jan 1965

Response Of Sheep And Swine To Treatments For Control Of Ovulation, P. J. Dziuk

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Control of the estrous cycle is essential to precise research in gamete and zygote physiology and could be useful in animal husbandry. The conception rate in sheep during the breeding season following treatments to control ovulation has varied from about normal (Dauzier, 4; Robinson, 20; Evans et al., 9; Lamond and Bindon, 17; Brunner et al., 3; Hinds et al., 15), to distressingly low levels in other cases (Braden et al., 2; Davies, 5; Lamond, 16). Treatments during the anestrous season have given a variable response but usually only 30 to 50 percent of ewes lamb (Gordon, 13; 14).

Evaluation Of Some Methods For Controlling The Bovine Estrous Cycle, R. G. Zimbelman Jan 1965

Evaluation Of Some Methods For Controlling The Bovine Estrous Cycle, R. G. Zimbelman

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This paper will deal primarily with the evaluation of various methods to control the estrous cycle in cattle. Consideration will be given to four methods of altering the normal estrual cycle. (A) The inhibition of ovulation as a means of altering the estrual cycle appears to be receiving most attention in recent years. The bulk of this paper will deal with ovulation inhibition by progestogens; thus, it would seem appropriate to give a brief evaluation of the other three methods.

Factors Influencing The Regression Of Corpora Lutea In The Ewe, Rabbit And Rat, H. G. Spies Jan 1965

Factors Influencing The Regression Of Corpora Lutea In The Ewe, Rabbit And Rat, H. G. Spies

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Stages in the life of corpora lutea may be divided logically into formation, function and regression. Mechanisms controlling each stage may be independent or overlapping depending on the species. Anderson et al.,(4) have pointed to lack of current evidence to allow a clear distinction between luteinizing hormone (LH) and luteotropic hormone (LTH) in farm animals. Initial LTH release is probably sufficient to form and maintain the corpora lutea for the normal estrous cycle (Aldred et al., 1). Maintenance of corpora lutea for the normal duration of an estrous cycle in hypophysectomized ewes (Denamur and Mauleon, 6) and sows (du Mesnil …

Nebraska Law Review

State ex rel. Sonneborn v. Sylvester is the first case decided by a state court of last resort on the issue of equal representation for boards of governmental bodies below the level of the state legislature since the United States Supreme Court held in Baker v. Carr that state malapportionment violates the equal protection clause of the federal constitution and presents a justiciable controversy. In so holding, the Supreme Court abandoned its previous position that malapportionment of state legislatures was a political question which only Congress or the President was competent to decide. The subsequent decisions of Gray v. Sanders …

When Is State Law Applied To Federal Acquisitions Of Real Property, Lawrence Berger Jan 1965

When Is State Law Applied To Federal Acquisitions Of Real Property, Lawrence Berger

Nebraska Law Review

The purpose of this article is to analyze the cases prior and subsequent to Clearfield Trust Co. v. United States involving the question of what law the United States courts apply when the federal sovereign is acquiring real property. These cases, which necessarily involve almost exclusively federal condemnation matters, indicate that both the Clearfield doctrine and the limitation thereon amplified in United States v. Standard Oil are applicable; that is, that both federal and state rules may come into play. An attempt is made herein to reconcile these cases and formulate some criteria for a proper resolution of the issues …

Rural Zoning In Nebraska, Donald R. Witt Jan 1965

Rural Zoning In Nebraska, Donald R. Witt

Nebraska Law Review

The purpose of this comment is to examine the rural problems in Nebraska and the possible solutions available through zoning. Zoning has evolved from the police power reserved to the individual states by the United States Constitution, subject to certain constitutional limitations and safeguards. Thus, to determine the absolute limits of valid zoning legislation, an examination must be made of the United States Supreme Court's interpretation of the police power. Since zoning is a power exercised by the individual states, however, the absolute limits allowed by the federal constitution may be further narrowed and constricted by state law, as interpreted …

Labor Law—May A Union Bargain Away An Employee's Right Of Free Speech?—Nlrb V. Gale Prods., 337 F.2d 390 (7th Cir. 1964), Donald H. Bowman

Nebraska Law Review

The decision in NLRB v. Gale Products is of great importance in the context of the larger problem of protecting personal freedom in an industrial society. The court limited its inquiry to a determination of whether the employer had committed an unfair labor practice under the National Labor Relations Act and failed to deal with the more fundamental problem involved, namely, whether the union possessed power to bargain away an employee's constitutionally guaranteed right of free speech. The fundamental question raised, given these premises, is whether the nature of the collective bargaining system requires that certain restrictions be placed on …

The Wife Of Bath And The Three Estates, Robert S. Haller Jan 1965

The Wife Of Bath And The Three Estates, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Explores how female sovereignty in the Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale results in "the subservience of the class function to the bourgeois ethic which the Wife represents," indicating parallels in Genesis. Alison controls the merchant class in her first three marriages; the clergy in her marriage to Jankyn. In the Wife of Bath, she subordinates the aristocratic King Arthur and the knight to female control.

Revision Of The Classification Of The Pleistocene Deposits Of Nebraska, E. C. Reed, V. H. Dreeszen

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

The first major contribution of the Conservation and Survey Division to Pleistocene stratigraphy was that of A. L. Lugn (1935) who established a classification of the periglacial deposits of the state and related these deposits to the glacial stages. G. E. Condra and E. C. Reed (1950) used information aquired during the 1935-1950 period in making important revisions to Lugn's classifications. This report was a further revision based on studies made from 1950 to publication date (1965).
