Miocene Mammals And Central American Seaways, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Robert H. Stewart Jan 1965

Miocene Mammals And Central American Seaways, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Robert H. Stewart

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The fossil mammal faunas of North and South America indicate that the two continents were separated from Paleocene or earlier time until the late Pliocene. Unfortunately our almost complete ignorance of the Tertiary land mammals of Central America, the geology of this large area, makes reconstruction of the Tertiary zoogeography of the region between the continents an exercise involving considerable speculation.

The Watershed Look ...At Soil And Conservation : Extension Circular 5-35-65, John W. Neuberger, Harold H. Gilman

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

INTRODUCTION Why This Project Is Important to the 4-H Member Soil and water conservation is wise use and care of the two most important natural resources—soil and water—for the greatest good, for the most people, for the longest time. How wisely our soil and water conservation problems are solved will be reflected in the wealth and spirit of tomorrow's people. A working knowledge of the watershed approach to land protection and flood reduction is important for planning community size programs. Those who practice soil and water conservation on the land have taken the first step toward solving their water problems …

Pattern of Growth in Nebraska (E. S. Wallace)

Within the past year we have published Nebraska data on personal income (March), population (April), retail trade (May), the service business (June), wholesale trade (July), and employment (September). In each of these except the last, city and/or county figures have been presented to depict the changes that have been taking place in different parts of the state. The present article is an attempt to combine these six indicators of economic activity into a composite picture showing the pattern of growth within Nebraska.

Business Summary (J. Timothy Wilson)

Sources of County Income in Nebraska: 1950 and 1962 (Wallace C. Peterson)

This is the fourth report of a preliminary character on the findings of a comprehensive research study of personal income in Nebraska's 93 counties. Earlier reports in this series appeared in Business in Nebraska in June, October, and November, 1964. A Bureau Bulletin, which will contain the complete data developed in this study, as well as an explanation of the methodology used, is being prepared for publication in the Spring of 1965.

County and City Population Estimates for 1964 (E. S. Wallace and E. L. Hauswald)

During 1964 Nebraska's total population grew by less than one-half of one percent to reach a year-end total of 1,498,375. The percentage increase is less than one-fourth of that achieved in each of the preceding three years since the 1960 census, but appears to be in line with the 1964 increases of 0.2% and 0.5% respectively in the state's civilian labor force and number or employed persons reported in January by the state Department of Labor. Our figures also appears to be in line with the …

Stock and Bond Yields (Keith Broman)

The recent change in the Federal Reserve discount rate has focused attention on interest rates both here and abroad. Equally important is the relationship between bond and stock yields.

Business Summary (Kim McNealy)

In October, the dollar volume of business for Nebraska rose 4.6% from the same month in 1963, but dropped 3.7% from September of 1964. The same index for the U.S. behaved similarly, the dollar volume of business rising 2.1% from October, 1963, and falling 1.9% from September, 1964. Business activity as measured by the Physical Volume Index increased 2.5% over last …

Personal Income in Nebraska (E. S. Wallace)

In his new bulletin on "Personal Income in Nebraska and Nebraska Counties: 1950-1962," announced elsewhere in this issue, Professor Wallace Peterson says: "Income has come to be regarded as the best and most comprehensive single measure of the general level of economic activity and well-being for a nation, for a state, and for regions." This article will attempt a brief analysis of the relative "well-being" of the state of Nebraska in terms of this concept, covering a somewhat longer period of time that that included in Professor Peterson's study and making use of …

Robert Henri, Norman Geske Jan 1965

Robert Henri, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The present exhibition has been assembled to commemorate the centennial of Robert Henri's birth. It is not intended to be a conventional review of his reputation and accomplishment, which has been established for a long time, but perhaps, instead, it will serve as an initial step in a reassessment of his accomplishment and a belated recognition of those aspects of his work which have not hitherto received anything like the attention they deserve.

The selection of works has been difficult in a special way. Henri was prolific and his work is abundantly represented in public and private collections. At the …

Stratigraphy And Structure Of The Goajira Peninsula, Northwestern Venezuela And Northeastern Colombia, John F. Rollins Jan 1965

Stratigraphy And Structure Of The Goajira Peninsula, Northwestern Venezuela And Northeastern Colombia, John F. Rollins

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The Goajira Peninsula forms the northernmost extension of continental South America (see Fig. 1). Its lobate outer portion, the area of this geologic study, is a mountainous region about 75 kilometers wide at its widest part and juts 150 kilometers northeastward into the Caribbean Sea. Although only about 110 kilometers north of the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela, the Peninsula is isolated and little known. Only a narrow coastal strip lies in Venezuela; the remainder is in Colombia; but the Peninsula is largely a desert wasteland not extensively entered by people other than its own sparse Indian population. Its remoteness has …

1965 Beef Cattle Progress Report Of Research Activities, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Beef carcass evaluation work is designed to obtain production and carcass data on bulls, steers and heifers. One objective is to evaluate sex effects on growth and carcass traits. Another is to determine if sires rank the same in growth and carcass traits on their bull, steer and heifer progeny.

Preliminary results from the 1963 slaughter groups were reported in the 1964 Beef Cattle Progress Report. This report covers averages of 1963 and 1964 results. Results both years were similar.

Attorney Characteristics And Courtroom Results, Stuart S. Nagel, Felix V. Gagliano Jan 1965

Attorney Characteristics And Courtroom Results, Stuart S. Nagel, Felix V. Gagliano

Nebraska Law Review

A number of sociologists and legal scholars have studied the background characteristics of different types of lawyers. No researcher, however, seems to have yet analyzed the possible relationships between these general characteristics and courtroom results. It is the purpose of this paper to offer some findings relevant to those relationships. The basic theoretical position of this paper is that, in substantial samples of cases, the characteristics of the opposing attorneys are in general relatively trivial predictive or explanatory variables, especially in comparison with the predictive power of the correlations between the outcomes of cases and the factual elements within those …

Nebraska's Anti-Shoplifting Statute, Stephen M. Joynt Jan 1965

Nebraska's Anti-Shoplifting Statute, Stephen M. Joynt

Nebraska Law Review

The crime of shoplifting has become so widespread in Nebraska during the past decade that in many instances as much as twenty per cent of the merchandise tendered for sale becomes the fruit of a successful pilfering scheme. This upsurge may be attributed largely to the advent and expansion of self-service stores. Recognizing the need to fortify the merchant's position in combating this problem, the Nebraska Legislature enacted an anti-shoplifting statute in 1957 and amended its provisions in 1963 to increase its effectiveness.

Heritability Estimates Of Udder Disease As 5ieasured By Various Tests And Their Relationship To Each Other And To Milk Yield, Age, And Milking Tisies, G. H. Schmidt, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Paternal half-sib heritability estimates oi' milk yield, number of quarters infected with mastitis organisms, and number <>f quarters showing abnormal mill; were obtained from an analysis of milking and mastitis data of 2,865 Holstein cows. The within-herd heritability estimate for daily milk yield was 0.353 and that for the number of quarters infected with Streptococcus agalactiae 0.196. The heritability estimates for the number of quarters infected with organisms other than Streptococcus agalactiae, number of quarters infected, and number of quarters showing abnormal milk were all below 0.1.

Within-herd correlation coefficients were calculated among daily milk yield, milking data, age, …

Luteotropic Properties Of Luteinizing Hormone And Nature Of Oxytocin Induced Luteal Inhibition In Cattle, Lloyd Donaldson, William Hansel, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1965

Luteotropic Properties Of Luteinizing Hormone And Nature Of Oxytocin Induced Luteal Inhibition In Cattle, Lloyd Donaldson, William Hansel, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fifty-three Holstein heifers were used to study the effects of oxytocin administered alone and in combination with various gonadotropins on the weights and progesterone contents of corpora lutea. Pituitary gonadotropin levels were compared in untreated and oxytocin-treated heifers at three stages of the estrous cycle.

Oxytoein injections on Days 2 through 6 significantly reduced the weights and total progesterone contents but not the progesterone concentrations of glands removed on Day 7. The concurrent administration of either purified bovine luteinizing hormone (LH) or human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) significantly increased these parameters from the oxytocin treatment levels to normal or supra-normal values. …

Handbook Of Waterfowl Behavior: Tribe Anseranatini (Magpie Goose), Paul A. Johnsgard

Handbook of Waterfowl Behavior by Paul A. Johnsgard

The first subfamily and tribe of the Anatidae consists of the single genus and species Anseranas semipalmata, or magpie goose. This species deviates in almost every respect from the rest of the Anatidae, and anatomical evidence indicates that it has some affinities with the South American family of screamers, the Anhimidae (Delacour, 1954; Woolfenden, 1961). The screamers are a group of semiterrestrial birds which in turn have some of the characteristics of gallinaceous birds. It appears that the screamers and the magpie goose represent major stages in the evolution of the typical waterfowl from a gallinaceous ancestor. Besides the …

Handbook Of Waterfowl Behavior, Paul A. Johnsgard

Handbook of Waterfowl Behavior by Paul A. Johnsgard

The present study was undertaken to test and evaluate the various taxonomic arrangements of the family, to discover some of the trends of behavioral evolution, and to provide a basis for future workers to use in naming, describing, and evaluating the behavioral patterns observed in waterfowl.

The major sexual behavior patterns of the species of Anatidae are reviewed and summarized, for the purpose of clarifying evolutionary relationships in the family, tracing the evolution of behavior patterns through various taxa, and evaluating the importance of certain behavior patterns as potential isolating mechanisms.

Species treated include:
Magpie Goose, Fulvous and Cuban Whistling …
