The Genus Carduus L. In Nebraska, Marian Jane Fuller Mar 1969

The Genus Carduus L. In Nebraska, Marian Jane Fuller

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The genus Carduus L., a member of the Compositae, consists of approximately 120 species native to Europe (Arenes, 1949; Mulligan and Frankton, 1954). Of these, C. acanthoides L., C. crispus L. and C. nutans L., have been introduced to North America, but only C. acanthoides and C. nutans have been reported in Nebraska.

A general description of the Nebraska members of this genus is as follows: annuals or biennials; herbaceous stems spiny winged; leaves lobed with spiny margins; heads solitary or clustered at end of branches; phyllaries imbricated, spine-tipped in many rows; florets tubular, perfect, usually purple, rarely white; cypsela …

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus Mar 1969

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Neonatal calf diarrhea typical of that seen in field cases was produced in colostrum-deprived calves by inoculating either feces or bacteria-free filtrates via the duodenum, orally, or by a spray (aerosol). Three calves, kept free of E. coli, developed severe diarrhea following inoculation with a bacteria-free filtrate. Intense fluorescence in the epithelium of sections of small intestine from two experimental calves was observed following staining with ftuorescein-labeled gamma globulin produced with viral antigen prepared from the feces of two experimental diarrhetic E. coli-free calves. Fluorescing cells were also present in the feces of experimental and field cases of neonatal …

Food Preference As A Factor In Distribution And Abundance Of Phoetaliotes Nebrascensis, K. P. Pruess Mar 1969

Food Preference As A Factor In Distribution And Abundance Of Phoetaliotes Nebrascensis, K. P. Pruess

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Western wheat grass, Agropyron smithii, was the plant most frequently ingested by Phoetaliotes nebrascensis (Thomas) in 4 of 5 habitats and was preferred in all. All grasses were eaten to some extent; nonpreferred plants may support populations in otherwise suitable habitats. Most forbs were unattractive but all tested species of Cichoriaceae were acceptable. Plant-finding was by random searching; selection was made only after contact through the mouthparts. While habitats in which preferred hosts were more abundant had higher grasshopper populations, annual changes in grasshopper abundance within a habitat were independent of abundance of primary food plants.

Local Moment Formation And Resistivity Minima In Coal Alloys, G.R. Caskey, David J. Sellmyer Mar 1969

Local Moment Formation And Resistivity Minima In Coal Alloys, G.R. Caskey, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Measurements of electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and magnetoresistance have been made from 1.4° to 300°K in alloys of 48%–57% cobalt in aluminum. At the equiatomic composition, CoAl has the CsCl structure. Resistance minima were observed in the vicinity of 30°K for cobalt concentrations between 50.4% and 51.5%. Below the resistance minima there is a temperature region where the dependence is approximately logarithmic before it saturates at about 1.4°K. The depth of the minima [ρ(1.4°K)– ρ( Tmin)] and the thermopower at 4.2°K both show rather sharp peaks as a function of concentration in the vicinity of 50.5% cobalt. The …

Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty Feb 1969

Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium L.) is a native of Eurasia. Scotch thistle is found in the grasslands of central Nebraska, with heaviest infestations in Gosper, Dawson, and Valley Counties and limited occurrence in 18 additional counties. The Nebraska Unicameral declared it a noxious weed in 1965. This study measures the effects of some environmental factors on scotch thistle germination and seedling growth, and clarifies some of the interactions of these with inherent characteristics of the achene. The effect of achene coat, stratification, light, temperature, growth regulators, pH, depth of planting, salinity, germination inhibitors, and moisture stress were studied.

Penicillium Urticae Bainier Enumeration In Soils, Fred A. Norstadt, T. M. Mccalla Feb 1969

Penicillium Urticae Bainier Enumeration In Soils, Fred A. Norstadt, T. M. Mccalla

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Studies of stubble-mulched soils from three locations in Nebraska showed larger total counts (bacteria and actinomycetes) and fungi than in plowed soils. Penicilliurn urticae Bainier numbers increased in subtilled soil compared with either plowed soil or subtilled soil with crop residues removed.** P. urticae B. produces patulin, a phytotoxic substance. This organism is regarded as one of the possible sources of the toxicity problem arising in stubble mulching. Penicillium expansum Link and patulin were studied in the apple replant problem.

The purpose of this paper is to present methods to estimate P. urticae B. numbers in soils and demonstrate patulin …

Projected Hartree Product Wavefunctions. Iii. Comparison With The Ci Method For H2, R.C. Morrison, Gordon A. Gallup Feb 1969

Projected Hartree Product Wavefunctions. Iii. Comparison With The Ci Method For H2, R.C. Morrison, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

Calculations of the energy of H2 have been performed using both the projected Hartree–Fock (PHF) method and a full CI method in the same basis for comparison of the two methods. It is discovered that PHF can account for 86% of the correlation energy, whereas CI will account for 88% of the correlation energy. ©1969 American Institute of Physics

Absence Of Dominance Of The Cu Gene In Influencing O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Content In Melilotus Alba, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz Feb 1969

Absence Of Dominance Of The Cu Gene In Influencing O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Content In Melilotus Alba, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The average content of o-hydroxycinnamic acid in sweetclover plants of the Cucu genotype was 36% of the level found in CuCu plants. Thus, the level of o-hydroxycinnamic acid in the F2 was more like the content of the cucu parent than that of the Cucu parent, indicating that cu was partially dominant over Cu. The calculated value for the degree of dominance of cu over Cu was +0.299. The partial dominance of the cu gene provides an explanation for the difficulty experienced in classifying plants in segregating populations.

Relationship Between Type Traits And Longevity Of Daughters Of Hew York Holstein Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. B. Filkins, H. W. Carter, C. L. Hart

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The percentage of 40 or more daughters having four lactations of 81 New York Holstein artificially insemination sires was correlated with the percentage of daughters in 66 type categories measured in the first lactation and their average first-lactation milk yield. Multiple regression on these type and production traits accounted for 92% of the variation in percentage of daughters having four lactations. A subset of 33 traits accounted for 82% of the variation. Traits with the largest standard partial regressions for longevity were milk production (.41), udder edema (.87 and .71), deep body (.53), medium upstandingness (.41), fore udder attachment (--.86 …

Sweetclover-Weevil Feeding Deterrent B: Isolation And Identification, W. R. Akeson, H.J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Jan 1969

Sweetclover-Weevil Feeding Deterrent B: Isolation And Identification, W. R. Akeson, H.J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Deterrent B, a compound apparently involved in the resistance of Melilotus infesta to the sweetclover weevil Sitona cylindricollis, has been isolated from leaves by a combination of preparative paper chromatography, sublimation, and crystallization. The compound has been identified as ammonium nitrate. Isolated deterrent B and ammonium nitrate have identical feeding deterrent activities. Although the deterrent principle was isolated as the ammonium salt, nitrate ion is probably responsible for the deterrent activity in vivo.

Application Of The Method Of Lattice Statics To Vacancies In Na, K, Rb, And Cs, John W. Flocken, John R. Hardy Jan 1969

Application Of The Method Of Lattice Statics To Vacancies In Na, K, Rb, And Cs, John W. Flocken, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

We have calculated the lattice distortion produced by a single vacancy in Na, K, Rb, and Cs. The calculations have been carried out using the technique of lattice statics, which is based on the Fourier transformation of the direct-space equilibrium equations, making consistent use of discrete lattice theory. Three distinct types of potential have been used to describe the interactions between the host atoms. The first of these applies only to sodium, and contains an ion-electron-ion term derived from the measured phonon dispersion curves. The second applies only to potassium, and has been similarly obtained. The third is based on …

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris Jan 1969

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.

Pulsational Instabilities In Hydrogen-Poor Massive Blue Stars, Norman R. Simon Jan 1969

Pulsational Instabilities In Hydrogen-Poor Massive Blue Stars, Norman R. Simon

Norman R. Simon Papers

The structure and pulsational properties of massive stars with helium cores and thin, hydrogen-poor envelopes have been investigated. The core structures are very insensitive to modifications of the hydrogen envelope. However, it is found that the total stellar radius and luminosity are modified by the integrated hydrogen content and by the hydrogen gradient, respectively. The models are pulsationally stable under modest conditions of central condensation (due to a hydrogen-burning shell and/or high hydrogen content). The unstable models are energized almost entirely by the helium reactions in the core, while most of the damping occurs in the thin hydrogen envelope. For …
