Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston Jan 1971

Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to measure the spatial and temporal dimensions of drought occurrence in Nebraska. Such interpretations were facilitated by the computer generation of 468 maps showing monthly values of drought in Nebraska, from 1931 through 1969. While it was found that the frequency of consecutive drought is least in the central portion of the state, the intensity of drought is greatest in this region. Maps of correspondence which relate the areal correlation between rural population density and precipitation also indicate high positive relationships for central Nebraska. Interpretation of tree ring growth values using moving t-test plots …

An Ecological Rationale For The Natural Or Artificial Regulation Of Native Ungulates In Parks, Glen F. Cole Jan 1971

An Ecological Rationale For The Natural Or Artificial Regulation Of Native Ungulates In Parks, Glen F. Cole

United States National Park Service: Publications

The results from studies of both naturally and artificially regulated ungulate populations in four Rocky Mountain parks are reviewed. Study findings on population regulation processes, the role of predators, natural mortality and natality, and ungulate habitat and food relationships suggest that previous assumptions which were the basis for artificially regulating ungulates over-estimated the regulatory effects of predators and did not always distinguish natural from human-influenced conditions or changes. The suggested rationale for artificially regulating native ungulates in Rocky Mountain parks is: a human influence that causes unnatural successional trends by restricting ungulates from freeranging over an ecologically complete habitat (1) …

The Role Of Fire In Managing Red Fir Forests, Bruce M. Kilgore Jan 1971

The Role Of Fire In Managing Red Fir Forests, Bruce M. Kilgore

United States National Park Service: Publications

Fire has long been a major factor in the ecology of forests in North America (Ahlgren and Ahlgren, 1960). Its role in the red fir forest of the Sierra Nevada, however, has received little study. Investigations in mixed conifer forests in Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks by Biswell (1961), Hartesveldt (1964), and Reynolds (1959) lead to the conclusion that fires have been less numerous during the past 50 years than they were in primitive forests. Estimates of frequency in such primitive forests range from a fire every year or two to one every 21 years (1961), with a …

Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus Jan 1971

Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The results of these studies indicate that a high percentage of Nebraska range cattle are infected with gastrointestinal parasites, but at a subclinical level of infection. However, significant differences were not observed in average daily gain between thiabendazole-treated range cattle and unmedicated controls in three of four field trials. In the three trials the average improvement in daily gain in animals receiving thiabendazole once averaged .01 lb greater than untreated controls. During a 120 day grazing period this improvement would not be sufficient to pay for the wormer or cost of additional labor.

A Bibliography Of The Aboriginal Archeology Of Nebraska, Donald J. Blakeslee Jan 1971

A Bibliography Of The Aboriginal Archeology Of Nebraska, Donald J. Blakeslee

Nebraska Anthropologist

I have tried to make this Bibliography as complete as possible, including material from surrounding states pertinent to the archeological problems of Nebraska and references which pertain more to the history of Nebraska archeology than to its content.

In compiling this list, I have used previous bibliographies by Robert W. Neuman (1962b, 1968) and Jerome E. Petsche (1968) which deal in part with Nebraska archeology.

Franchise Full Disclosure, Terry D. Sattler Jan 1971

Franchise Full Disclosure, Terry D. Sattler

Nebraska Law Review

Although there is no "typical" franchise contract, the franchise purchaser, or franchisee, is usually required to pay a fee for the privilege of opening a franchise outlet, and must then rely upon the franchise seller, the franchisor, to provide guidance and support in the operation of the enterprise. If the venture fails, the franchisee may lose his entire investment. In the past, there have been attempts to regulate substantive provisions of franchise agreements in order to reduce the instances of investment loss by franchisees. The focus of recent concern over franchising practices has not involved the objection to particular contract …

The Proposed Arkansas Constitution Of 1970, Robert W. Meriwether Jan 1971

The Proposed Arkansas Constitution Of 1970, Robert W. Meriwether

Nebraska Law Review

Most state constitutions are bulky, severely outmoded documents, badly in need of revision. The state of Arkansas in 1967 launched a commission to study and propose revisions to the Arkansas Constitution of 1874. At the November 1970 general election, the voters of Arkansas decisively rejected the revised state constitution, even though it had been drafted by the Seventh Arkansas Constitutional Convention and endorsed by ninety-eight of its one hundred delegates, the major political parties, both major party candidates for governor, two leading state newspapers, and many influential organizations, and even though opponents were few and disorganized. Only eleven of Arkansas’s …

Personal Jurisdiction In Divorce Proceedings: Stucky V. Stucky, 186 Neb. 636 (1971), Douglas L. Curry Jan 1971

Personal Jurisdiction In Divorce Proceedings: Stucky V. Stucky, 186 Neb. 636 (1971), Douglas L. Curry

Nebraska Law Review

Mr. Justice Field observed in 1877, "The authority [to render in personam judgments] of every tribunal is necessarily restricted by the territorial limits of the State in which it is established." A steady erosion of state lines as the demarcation for state court in personam jurisdiction began thereafter (especially following the International Shoe Co. v. Washington decision). Today the extent of this erosion in the various states is considerable. Stucky v. Stucky is one example of the extent to which state boundaries have yielded to the pressure to expand the state courts' personal jurisdiction. In that case the Nebraska Supreme …

Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter Jan 1971

Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

One hundred and five college freshmen were given one of two different side-effects lists associated with a placebo pill. In a “second” experiment, subjects experienced failure on a vocabulary test, supposedly predictive of college success, and received an opportunity to cheat on the test by changing answers. Although it was anticipated that all subjects who considered cheating would experience some arousal, it was predicted that those subjects told to expect drug-induced side effects related to sympathetic arousal would not label their experienced arousal as fear or guilt, and would cheat more than the subjects who anticipated benign side effects. Of …

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesús Gil De Lamadrid Jan 1971

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesús Gil De Lamadrid

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The resulting "Fourier transformation" µ—µ^ contains the classical theory and leads to generalizations of a variety of classical results, including the Plancherel theorem and the Poisson summation formula. The present work can also be regarded as a sort of theory of tempered distributions on general locally compact abelian groups. It is true that Bruhat [ l l ] introduced a direct generalization to this setting of the theory of Schwartz [10], but, to the best of our knowledge, a detailed study of the Fourier transform has not been carried out. In a forthcoming exposition we shall describe the precise relation …
