Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder Jan 1973

Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

Noumenon: Synopsis

The work, which perhaps could best be described as a “metaphysical comedy”, consists of three levels:

1) the biography of the unnamed dilettante artist-philosopher “__”
2) personal interpolations by the biographer, Russel Stanford
3) editor’s commentary by Randall Snyder

Stanford, in spite of a lack of enthusiasm for the subject, agrees to write the biography. During this period his health degenerates and he increasingly imposes his own irrelevant opinions into the biography (his remarks are all indented, using the Palatino font, and further identified by the use of the small case “i”. The “biography” uses the New York …

Decompositions Of Modules And Matrices, Thomas S. Shores, Roger Wiegand Jan 1973

Decompositions Of Modules And Matrices, Thomas S. Shores, Roger Wiegand

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

A canonical form for a module M over a commutative ring R is a decomposition M £ R/^ © • • • 0 #//„, where the Ij are ideals oiR and I x £ ••• £ /„.A complete structure theory is developed for those rings for which every finitely generated module has a canonical form. The (possibly larger) class of rings, for which every finitely generated module is a direct sum of cyclics, is also considered, and partial results are obtained for rings with fewer than 2C prime ideals. For example, if R is countable and every finitely generated …

Section 357(C): The Quest For Equality Between Accrual And Cash Basis Taxpayers, Stephen C. Johnson Jan 1973

Section 357(C): The Quest For Equality Between Accrual And Cash Basis Taxpayers, Stephen C. Johnson

Nebraska Law Review

Incorporation of an existing business almost invariably raises the question of whether the corporation should assume the business's liabilities and whether such an assumption creates income tax problems under section 357 of the Internal Revenue Code. Cash basis taxpayers in particular have encountered special problems when incorporating a partnership or sole proprietorship and often have received an unexpected tax liability in the year of incorporation. Generally, gain or loss is not recognized when assets and liabilities are transferred to a controlled corporation solely in exchange for the stock or securities of that corporation. Section 357(c) of the Internal Revenue Code, …

Parameters Of Growth Of Holstein-Friesian Bulls, L. L. Calo, R. E. Mcdowell, L. Dale Van Vleck, P. D. Miller Jan 1973

Parameters Of Growth Of Holstein-Friesian Bulls, L. L. Calo, R. E. Mcdowell, L. Dale Van Vleck, P. D. Miller

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Growth records of 504 pedigree selected Holstein-Friesian bulls by 120 sires collected for progeny testing at the American Breeders Service, Inc., DeForest, Wisconsin from 1964 to 1971, were studied to determine the shape of the growth curve, relationships among body weights and growth rates at various ages and to estimate heritability of growth. Body weight and average/daily gain were consistently higher than the previous growth standards for Holstein-Friesian bulls. Bulls weighed about 480 kg at 15 months, which was 46% of average mature weight. Average daily gain ranged from 1.3 to 0.8 kg between 6 and 18 months of age. …

Reproductive Efficiency In Aged Female Rabbits Given Supplemental Progesterone And Oestradiol, Larry L. Larson, C. H. Spilman, H. O. Dunn, R. H. Foote Jan 1973

Reproductive Efficiency In Aged Female Rabbits Given Supplemental Progesterone And Oestradiol, Larry L. Larson, C. H. Spilman, H. O. Dunn, R. H. Foote

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The reproductive efficiency of twenty-eight aged does, 49 to 72 months old, was compared with that of eighteen young does, 6 to 13 months old. Fertilization rate and development in vitro of fertilized ova from rabbits induced to superovulate were not influenced by the doe's age. Ovulation rates following natural mating were only slightly reduced with age. However, the number of embryos per doe was much greater in young than in old does at 12 and 24 days post coitum. All young does had viable embryos, whereas the percentages of aged does with detectable implantation sites and viable embryos were …

Subjective Evaluation Of Teat Canal Anatomy, R. D. Appleman Jan 1973

Subjective Evaluation Of Teat Canal Anatomy, R. D. Appleman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Since radiographic techniques have shown that streak canals with larger diameters tend to milk-out faster and are more susceptible to new intramammary infections, a practical visual test was sought to provide easier determination of cows with either extremely narrow (slow milking) or extra wide (susceptible to new infections) streak canals.

A subjective teat classification scheme was developed to describe five different teat-end shapes in 159 Holstein and Brown Swiss cows in the University of Nebraska dairy herd. Approximately one-fourth of the cattle had pointed or round teat ends, one-half had fiat or near flat, and one-fourth were either disk or …

Evaluation Of Purebreds And Two-Breed Crosses In Swine: Feedlot Performance And Carcass Merit , R. K. Johnson, I. T. Omtvedt, L. E. Walters Jan 1973

Evaluation Of Purebreds And Two-Breed Crosses In Swine: Feedlot Performance And Carcass Merit , R. K. Johnson, I. T. Omtvedt, L. E. Walters

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Feedlot performance of 941 barrows and gilts and carcass traits of 190 barrows of purebreds and crossbreds of the Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire breeds were evaluated for differences between purebreds and reciprocal crosses and for heterosis. Purebred and crossbred litters were farrowed contemporaneously at the Ft. Reno Experiment Station in the 1971 spring and fall farrowing seasons.

Rather distinct differences between the pure breeds were evident for most traits. In general, Durocs gained weight more rapidly than Hampshires and Yorkshires while Yorkshires were the most efficient pure breed. Hampshire barrows had less backfat, more loin eye area and more total …
