G74-171 Summer Annual Forage Grasses (Revised January 1986), Bruce Anderson, Paul Guyer Jan 1974

G74-171 Summer Annual Forage Grasses (Revised January 1986), Bruce Anderson, Paul Guyer

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses production practices, methods of use, and precautions for using summer annual grasses.

Summer annual grasses are used for summer pasture, green chop, hay, silage, and winter pasture. They are often used as sources of emergency forage. In addition, residues of summer annuals make an excellent seedbed mulch for new stands of perennial grass, particularly on sands.

The summer annual grasses most often used for forage in Nebraska are sudangrass, hybrid sudangrass, sorghum-sudangrass hybrids, and forage sorghums. Foxtail millet and pearl millet are used occasionally. Each of these grasses has unique growth characteristics that require proper management for …

G74-188 Amaryllis Culture, Don Steinegger, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The hybrid amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is a tender bulb easily grown in pots. Amaryllis is prized for its huge showy flowers ranging from scarlet or crimson to white in color, and often striped or mottled.

Amaryllis can be grown outdoors throughout the year in mild climates, but must be grown indoors in Nebraska except during the warm summer months. Amaryllis is prized for its huge showy flowers ranging from scarlet or crimson to white in color, and often striped or mottled. Most amaryllis are Dutch or African hybrids selected for flower size, color and ease of forcing. The usual flowering season …

Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam Jan 1974

Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The squatter problem is one of complexity and diversity, and lasting solutions to the problem have been elusive, despite the numerous techniques and approaches that have been tried out. This is primarily because the squatter problem has. not been comprehensively understood or defined.

The objective of this study is therefore to find a comprehensive definition of the squatter problem, with specific reference to Bangkok, in Thailand, and to recommend workable principles as a basis for their control and progressive elimination.

Proper reorganization of squatter control mechanisms can contribute to the orderly spatial growth in the city; and will promote the …

Review Of Curassows And Related Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1974

Review Of Curassows And Related Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

To contemplate the appearance of a new book dealing for the first time with an exhaustive coverage of an entire avian family is to evoke an excitement that is all too rare an occurrence for most ornithologists. This excitement is enhanced when the bird group is one of the least studied and yet, evolutionarily speaking, most significant of the galliform families, and when the authors are as well known and highly respected as Delacour and Amadon. Anticipation reaches its apogee when the contributing artists are as competent as Albert E. Gilbert, George M. Sutton, and David Reid-Henry. After reading the …

G74-165 Understand Your Soil Test: Calcium, Magnesium, Boron, Copper, Chlorine, Molybdenum, Delno Knudsen, K.D. Frank

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

It is possible to analyze soil samples for any of the 13 essential elements which plants obtain from the soil. This does not mean that the results obtained can be used to predict adequacy or deficiency for plant growth.

The value obtained from any chemical procedure used to determine each element must be shown to be related to (1) crop response from application of that element (correlation) and (2) the soil test level at which response occurs (calibration). Crop response is usually measured as yield, but may also be a quality factor. Field plot and greenhouse research are used to …

G74-170 Nitrates In Livestock Feeding (Revised July 1996), Richard J. Rasby, Bruce Anderson, Norman Schneider Jan 1974

G74-170 Nitrates In Livestock Feeding (Revised July 1996), Richard J. Rasby, Bruce Anderson, Norman Schneider

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Most forages contain some nitrates. When feeds containing nitrates are consumed by ruminants, nitrates are changed in the rumen to ammonia that is then converted by bacteria in the rumen into microbial protein. Nitrates are not always toxic to animals.

This NebGuide describes signs, causes, prevention and treatment of nitrate poisoning in livestock.

Self-Sustaining Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Population In Mcconaughy Reservoir, Nebraska, Rodney C. Van Velson Jan 1974

Self-Sustaining Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Population In Mcconaughy Reservoir, Nebraska, Rodney C. Van Velson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

A self-sustaining rainbow trout population has developed in the North Platte River drainage. This population inhabits McConaughy Reservoir and reproduces successfully in tributary streams of the North Platte River located approximately 11.3 to 145 km above the reservoir. Fall and spring spawning populations migrate from the reservoir.

Scale analysis indicated 92% of the juveniles had spent 1 yr and 8% had spent 2 yr in the stream before the spring migration to the reservoir as 175-250 mm smolts. In the 1965-1969 spawning populations 1.3 life history categories were present. The spawning runs were composed of 76% maiden spawners, 22% second-year …

Things Seen, Norman A. Geske Jan 1974

Things Seen, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The present exhibition has been organized to focus attention on one of the most flourishing aspects of contemporary American painting, the revival of representational art in the traditional formats of the landscape, the figure and the still life. For the past ten years it has become evident that more and more artists are having second thoughts about the abstract style which had come to dominate the artistic scene within the several previous decades. There are instances of renunciation, a sudden yet deliberate turning away from abstraction toward some form of traditional representation. There are also numerous instances of artists beginning …

Quilts From Nebraska Collections, Norman Geske Jan 1974

Quilts From Nebraska Collections, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

PREFACE

In early America most quilts were made for utilitarian purposes. Later, when time and fabrics became more plentiful, quilt making developed into an art form which flourished during the 19th century and continues to do so today. Within the broad definition of "patchwork," three types are represented in this exhibition-pieced, applique and crazy.

Pieced quilts are made from materials cut in geometric shapes and put together in pattern blocks. These blocks are repeated to form the quilt top. The designs were often of political, historical or religious events, but many also were associated with abstract visual ideas and images. …
