Consumer Behavior: An Epidemiological Perspective, Thomas J. Prendergast Jan 1976

Consumer Behavior: An Epidemiological Perspective, Thomas J. Prendergast

Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings

My interest is epidemiology and preventive medicine. Epidemiology is the study of disease distributions in man. Preventive medicine is the attempt to avoid acquiring the risk factors of diseases by individuals, which can be called "primary prevention." Also it is the attempt to avoid development of diseases among those who have risk factors, and that is known as secondary prevention. Quite clearly there is much concern about epidemiology as the basis for preventive medicine and about preventive medicine as a potentially cheaper and easier way to provide quality medicine. Health education is a clear dimension of preventive medicine.

Sociological Factors In High Blood Pressure, Sidney M. Stahl Jan 1976

Sociological Factors In High Blood Pressure, Sidney M. Stahl

Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings

High blood pressure is a silent killer and is therefore one of the most significant of the medically related problems that afflicts modern man. Approximately 25 million people living in the United States have the disease. In reality, it is not a "disease" in the classic meaning of that term; instead its sequelae, or subsequent effects, are diseases that are all too familiar and deadly: stroke, kidney disease and myocardial infarction (heart attack), to name just a few. In fact, there are more deaths in the United States each year attributable to the sequelae of high blood pressure than to …

G76-312 What Are Good Labor Relations?, Robert E. Perry Jan 1976

G76-312 What Are Good Labor Relations?, Robert E. Perry

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Good labor relations is the factor most often identified as necessary for successful employment by farm employees. Farmers who employ hired labor also rate "good labor relations" as an important factor, though many rate good wages as more important

What are "good labor relations"? From answers received from employees, they appear to involve a mixture of human characteristics and open communications that build mutual respect and loyalty.

Luteinizing Hormone, Testosterone, Growth And Carcass Responses To Sexual Alteration In The Ram, B. D. Schanbacher, J. J. Ford Jan 1976

Luteinizing Hormone, Testosterone, Growth And Carcass Responses To Sexual Alteration In The Ram, B. D. Schanbacher, J. J. Ford

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A total of 130 ram lambs were used in a study to determine the effects of sex alteration on serum hormone levels, growth rate and carcass traits. Sex alteration included no treatment (intact rams), scrotal ablation to alter normal testicular secretion (short scrotum rams) and castration to completely remove influences derived from the testes (wethers). Although these data suggest that scrotal ablation at birth did not produce complete azoospermia in Finn-crossbred rams, reduction (P<.01) in testicular weight did produce significant results. Serum testosterone in short scrotum and intact rams was similar, whereas castration resulted in considerably lower concentrations of this steroid (P<.01). On the other hand, serum luteinizing hormone was increased (P<.01) threefold in short scrotum rams and 12-fold in wethers as compared to that of intact rams. Because these results cannot be fully explained by changes in serum testosterone, it is speculated that changes in secretory products of the testis which accompany degeneration of the germinal epithelium are responsible for elevated luteinizing hormone. Post-weaning average daily gain (P<.01) and feed efficiency were highest in intact and short scrotum rams indicating that testosterone (or testis) may be beneficial. Although dressing percentage and adjusted backfat were highest (P<.01) in wethers, carcass weight and yield grade were advantageous (P<.01) in short scrotum and intact rams. Quality grades were similar; all animals reached average choice.

Zoning Growth Controls For The General Welfare: Construction Industry Association V. Petaluma, 522 F.2d 897 (9th Cir. 1975), Alan D. Slattery Jan 1976

Zoning Growth Controls For The General Welfare: Construction Industry Association V. Petaluma, 522 F.2d 897 (9th Cir. 1975), Alan D. Slattery

Nebraska Law Review

Throughout the nation, suburbs located near established metropolitan centers are seeking ways to provide necessary municipal services to rapidly expanding populations without substantial increases in local taxes. In doing so, they wish to preserve the character of their community and avoid any undesirable growth. This new attitude toward urban growth was displayed in the comprehensive plan developed for Petaluma, California. In Construction Industry Association v. Petaluma, the Ninth Circuit found that the Petaluma Plan ("the Plan") was a reasonable attempt by the city to deal with these growth pressures when it found itself unable to provide needed public services, …

Homosexuals And The Death Penalty In Colonial America, Louis Crompton Jan 1976

Homosexuals And The Death Penalty In Colonial America, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This article traces the legislative history of statutes prescribing the death penalty for sodomy in 17th-century New England and in the other American colonies. New England and some middle colonies broke with English legal tradition by adopting explicitly biblical language. After the Revolution, Pennsylvania took the lead, in 1786, in dropping the death penalty.

As the nation prepares to celebrate the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence, the question of the status of the homosexual in pre-Revolutionary America comes to mind. The Body of Liberties approved by the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in 1641 welcomed refugees seeking to escape "the …

Low-Energy Electron Scattering From Mg, Zn, Cd And Hg: Shape Resonances And Electron Affinities, Paul Burrow, J.A. Michejda, J. Comer Jan 1976

Low-Energy Electron Scattering From Mg, Zn, Cd And Hg: Shape Resonances And Electron Affinities, Paul Burrow, J.A. Michejda, J. Comer

Paul Burrow Publications

Measurements of electron scattering at low energy from Mg, Zn, Cd and Hg have been carried out using the electron transmission method. A large shape resonance is observed for each element which we identify with the (ns2np)2P ground state of the negative ion. The electron affinities in eV are found to be Mg(–0.15), Zn(–0.49), Cd(–0,33) and Hg(–0.63) with an error of ±0.03 eV. The results are compared with the available theoretical predictions.

The Effects Of Boating Upon Lead Concentrations In Fish, David Oates Jan 1976

The Effects Of Boating Upon Lead Concentrations In Fish, David Oates

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The concentration of lead in fish muscle tissue from lakes where boating is heavy and where it is prohibited was measured. The lead levels ranged from less than 0.05 to 1.35 ppm but did not differ significantly between those in the controlled and non-controlled boating lakes. Lead levels apparently pose no public health hazard.

The Sharp-Tailed Grouse In Nebraska, Leonard Sisson Jan 1976

The Sharp-Tailed Grouse In Nebraska, Leonard Sisson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The plains sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesii) is one of four species of grouse (Family Tetraonidae) found in Nebraska. The other species are the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus), sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), and ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus). The plains sharp-tailed grouse is one of six subspecies of Pedioecetes found in North America (Aldrich 1963). Closely related to the sharptail, the greater prairie chicken occupies similar habitat. Although in different genera, the two species hybridize where their ranges overlap Oohnsgard 1968). Because of the similarities, the two species were often confused …

Chromosomal Banding Patterns Of The Holarctic Rodents, Clethrionomys Rutilus And Microtus Oeconomus, C. F. Nadler, V. R. Rausch, E. A. Lyapunova, N. N. Vorontsov, R. S. Hoffman

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Biologists have long been aware of close similarities between the mammalian faunas of northern Eurasia and northern North America (Flerov 1967; Rausch 1953, 1963; Sushkin 1925; Tugarinov 1934). This similarity is particularly strong between species of tundra and taiga ecosystems (Hoffmann and Taber 1967; Hoffmann 1974). Among the species having Holarctic distributions, the boreal red-backed vole, Clethrionomys rutilus (Pallas), and the tundra vole, Microtus oeconomus (Pallas) (Rausch, op. cit.), of the subfamily Arvicolinae (= Microtinae) (Kretzoi 1962; Repenning 1968), have wide distributions in Eurasia where they inhabit, but are not restricted to, tundra (Ognev 1950; Corbet 1966). East of the …

Our Museum- An Artist's View, Nathan Mohler, Harvey Gunderson Jan 1976

Our Museum- An Artist's View, Nathan Mohler, Harvey Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Museums seem to be all things to all people. Some visitors come to the museum in search of information on specific questions. For others, a visit to the museum with friends is more of a social occasion which makes the acquisition of knowledge become not only a learning experience, but one of entertainment as well. For still others, the museum represents an amalgam of zoo, circus, and perhaps a bit of the carnival sideshow. Certainly the heroic proportions of the restorations of extinct animals, the somewhat macabre mummies, along with the "world's largest elephant," suggest to some the excitement and …

A Dinosaur Revival, Harvey L. Gunderson Jan 1976

A Dinosaur Revival, Harvey L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Just about everyone loves dinosaurs! Just ask any museum guard, 4th grader, or grandparent looking for souvenirs at a museum's gift shop. The only natural history exhibits that persistently challenge their popularity, in a child's mind, are the fabled mummies of ancient Egypt. Why does just the mention of the name "dinosaur" activate the imagination of most people? Naturally their size and dominating appearance are significant; however, we would hope people are also ---I intrigued by the very fact that these majestic beasts really existed at all, and for some ill-explained reason ----I seemed to disappear at the height of …
