G77-361 Using Starter Fertilizers For Corn, Grain Sorghum, And Soybeans, Edwin J. Penas, Gary W. Hergert Jan 1977

G77-361 Using Starter Fertilizers For Corn, Grain Sorghum, And Soybeans, Edwin J. Penas, Gary W. Hergert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Starter fertilizer may increase early growth of corn and grain sorghum. Grain yield increases from starter nutrients are most likely on low phosphorus soils and some sandy soils.

Proper use of a starter fertilizer is an important management tool for crop producers striving for top yields. While the use of a starter fertilizer can be important for crop production on many soils, it is more important for corn production on irrigated sandy soils than on fine textured soils.

A Personal Vision Of A More Meaningful Anthropology (A Review Of Personal And Extrapersonal Vision In Anthropology By Robert Jay), David C. Dominik Jan 1977

A Personal Vision Of A More Meaningful Anthropology (A Review Of Personal And Extrapersonal Vision In Anthropology By Robert Jay), David C. Dominik

Nebraska Anthropologist

In an unpublished paper presented to the AAA Annual meeting in 1969, Robin Ridington discusses "The Anthropology of Experience" (also the title). The paper relates the story of Jumping Mouse, a not-so-ordinary field mouse. Jumping Mouse leaves his brothers to satisfy his curiosity about the rushing sound in his head. The story makes special note that Jumping Mouse can see only a short distance ahead of himself as he travels, the philosophical implication being that he has limited vision. Curiosity becomes a quest after Jumping Mouse sees the rushing river; he the strives to reach the sacred mountains way off …

Review Of The Grant Oneota Village By Marshall Mckusick, Carol Raish Jan 1977

Review Of The Grant Oneota Village By Marshall Mckusick, Carol Raish

Nebraska Anthropologist

Marshall McKusick's monograph, The Grant Oneota Village, reports the results of excavations at the Grant Village site (13AM201). Grant Village is a multicomponent site located on the Hartley Terrace of the Upper Iowa River, Allamakee County, Iowa. The main focus of the report is the description and interpretation of house remains found on the terrace. The site is a very important one for Oneota specialists as it offers the possibility of much new information on house form and community patterning. Other topics covered include a discussion of Oneota taxonomy, a cultural chronology of the Hartley Terrace, and ethnohistotic parallels …

Climatic Change And The Initial Middle Missouri Tradition, David L. Cook Jan 1977

Climatic Change And The Initial Middle Missouri Tradition, David L. Cook

Nebraska Anthropologist

It has been postulated that a favorable climatic change occurs worldwide at approximately 900 A.D. At this same time, many cultures expanded and many cultures appeared for the first time, specifically the Initial Middle Missouri Variant in North and South Dakota. In this paper, I will try to demonstrate that a climatic change did occur worldwide, that cultures do respond and change to shifts in climate, and I will try to demonstrate the responses of certain cultures to the 900 A.D. climatic change. Specifically, I will try to show what may have happened to the Initial Middle Missouri culture area …

Intermunicipal Remedy For Discrimination In Public Housing: Hills V. Gautreaux, 425 U.S. 284 (1976), Paul E. Hofmeister Jan 1977

Intermunicipal Remedy For Discrimination In Public Housing: Hills V. Gautreaux, 425 U.S. 284 (1976), Paul E. Hofmeister

Nebraska Law Review

Housing disparity based on race has been recognized as "the most serious domestic problem facing America today." Public housing recently became a major target of civil rights groups intent on the integration of American society. On April 20, 1976, the United States Supreme Court reasserted the power of the federal courts to order the location of low-income public housing, largely benefiting racial minorities, in the suburbs of a large metropolitan area. The question before the Supreme Court in Hills v. Gautreaux was whether the district court had authority to order the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to remedy …

An Analysis Of The "Actual Use" Valuation Procedure Of Section 2032a, Bradley D. Holtorf Jan 1977

An Analysis Of The "Actual Use" Valuation Procedure Of Section 2032a, Bradley D. Holtorf

Nebraska Law Review

In recent years the value of America's farmland has increased at a phenomenal rate. Normally, farmland is valued at its fair market value for purposes of assessing the federal estate tax. Under section 20.2031-1(b) of the treasury regulations, this means, among other things, that farm property will be valued at its highest and best use, even though the valuation cannot be justified because of the lack of profitability of the farm or small business. This valuation method, combined with the gradually progressive rate of the federal estate tax, has resulted in the heirs being faced with higher estate taxes. In …

Conspiracy: The Requisite Proof: State V. Dent, 198 Neb. 110, 251 N.W.2d 734 (1977), Lynne Rae Fritz Jan 1977

Conspiracy: The Requisite Proof: State V. Dent, 198 Neb. 110, 251 N.W.2d 734 (1977), Lynne Rae Fritz

Nebraska Law Review

Despite the inherent vagueness of the crime of conspiracy, it may be said to require an agreement between two or more persons, which constitutes the criminal act, and an intent to thereby achieve a certain unlawful act. However, it is difficult to divide conspiracy into the elements of criminal act and criminal intent because the act of agreement, since it is volitional, also requires an intent. Some jurisdictions also require an overt act in furtherance of the agreement; however, if the agreement is established, virtually any overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy will suffice. The elements of conspiracy are …

Liability Of Liquor Vendors To Third Party Victims: Holmes V. Circo, 196 Neb. 496, 244 N.W.2d 65 (1976), Avis R. Andrews Jan 1977

Liability Of Liquor Vendors To Third Party Victims: Holmes V. Circo, 196 Neb. 496, 244 N.W.2d 65 (1976), Avis R. Andrews

Nebraska Law Review

Prior to 1959 a third party victim's only recourse against a liquor vendor was through dram shop and civil damage acts. These acts impose liability upon liquor vendors for injuries caused by the sale of alcoholic beverages to certain statutorily proscribed persons. Under the traditional common law, a cause of action against a liquor vendor was virtually unknown. The basis for refusing to impose such liability usually rested on the theory that it was the consumption of the liquor, not the sale, which was the proximate cause of the injury. Other courts refused recovery on the basis of contributory negligence, …

The Hognose Snake: A Prairie Survivor For Ten Million Years, M. R. Voorhies, R. G. Corner, Harvey L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Because they hiss and strike violently when aroused, the harmless little hognose snakes are often considered to be poisonous by people who encounter them. They are not venomous but are truly remarkable animals with specialized behavior and anatomy unusually well suited for life in the grasslands of central North America.

The University of Nebraska State Museum has recently acquired fossil evidence regarding the evolutionary history of these common Great Plains reptiles. We can now trace the record of the hognose snakes back to a time long before the arrival of man, the bison, or even the mammoth on the North …

Propagule Dispersal Among Forest Islands In Southeastern South Dakota, J. Warren Ranney, W. Carter Johnson Jan 1977

Propagule Dispersal Among Forest Islands In Southeastern South Dakota, J. Warren Ranney, W. Carter Johnson

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The study of seed dispersal between the widely separated forest patches (forest islands) of the eastern Great Plains can contribute to understanding effects of deforestation in the more complex forest island landscapes of the eastern United States. In the East, there is growing concern that the dissection of regional forests and the creation of small forest islands surrounded by non-forest uses (e.g., agriculture) may be affecting plant species richness and developmental patterns of vegetation (Levenson 1976), as has already been noted in the tropics (Gomezpompa et al. 1972). Curtis (1956) showed that the presettlement forest area in a portion of …

Channel Catfish Virus Disease, John A. Plumb Jan 1977

Channel Catfish Virus Disease, John A. Plumb

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Channel catfish virus disease (CCVD) is an acute infection of cultured fry and fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The causative agent is the channel catfish virus (CCV) , a member of the herpesvirus group. Since its first identification (Fijan 1968) the virus has been isolated from infected fish collected during epizootics at catfish hatcheries in the warmer latitudes of the United States. The disease is found primarily during the summer and, with a single known exception to date, in fish less than 4 months old. The virus has been isolated only from fish taken while an epizootic was …

Yellow-Crowned Night Herons Sighted In North Dakota, Dennis G. Jorde, Gary L. Krapu, Robert K. Green

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Yellow-crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) sighted at four locations in North Dakota during 1976 appear to be the first observations of this species for the State. We sighted a single individual about 8 km south of Medina, North Dakota in western Stutsman County during several visits in June and July 1976. The bird was first seen on 23 June standing in a pasture adjoining an 8.5 ha semi-permanent marsh. On following visits, the heron usually was seen perched in trees at the edge of the wetland. A single yellow-crowned night heron was sighted on the same wetland on …

Workmen's Compensation—A New "In The Course Of Employment" Concept: Eliker V. D.H. Merritt & Sons, 195 Neb. 154, 237 N.W.2d 130 (1975), Sally Johnson

Nebraska Law Review

In Eliker v. D.H. Merritt & Sons, the Nebraska Supreme Court held that workmen's compensation should be denied to a claimant who offered proof that he received a back injury while engaged in his usual work activities, but who failed to show exactly what he was doing at the time of the injury. The court found that the claimant had failed to satisfy the requirement that the injury arise out of and in the course of the employment. This represents a new interpretation of the requirement that the employee's injury occur "in the course of employment." The new interpretation …

The Expansion Of Liability For Medical Accidents: From Negligence To Strict Liability By Way Of Informed Consent, Alan Meisel Jan 1977

The Expansion Of Liability For Medical Accidents: From Negligence To Strict Liability By Way Of Informed Consent, Alan Meisel

Nebraska Law Review

This article examines the various ways in which the courts have been fashioning rules of liability for medical accidents that add up to an incipient system of strict liability. The obvious judicial circumlocutions, which appear necessitated by the inability of the courts under existing rules of law to award compensation to severely injured medical-accident victims, are the main area of concern, not the routine application of well-established general principles to novel situations of fact.

Selective Attention Between Words, Shapes And Colors In Speeded Classification And Vocalization Tasks, John H. Flowers, Charles M. Stoup Jan 1977

Selective Attention Between Words, Shapes And Colors In Speeded Classification And Vocalization Tasks, John H. Flowers, Charles M. Stoup

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The presence of irrelevant words (incongruent color and shape names) substantially slowed the sorting of shapes and colors. This interference was maintained over four sessions of practice for color sorting, but essentially vanished for shape classification and color classification using stimuli in which the word and color were physically separated. Interference with oral naming was maintained over 4 days of practice for all types of stimuli, demonstrating that spatial selectivity of attention is highly dependent upon the response requirements of the task.
