A Study Of The Architectural Space Necessary To Perform The Theatre Of Antonin Artaud, Larry L. Peterson Aug 1970

A Study Of The Architectural Space Necessary To Perform The Theatre Of Antonin Artaud, Larry L. Peterson

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

Preface excerpt

The theatre of Artaud was being attempted by a few companies, notably, the Royal Shakespeare Company with Peter Brook doing "Marat/Sade;" and the Living Theatre with Judith and Julian Beck performing "The Brig."

I found the style of both performances exciting, and as a student of architectural design, I found great challenge in attempting a theatre space study which would allow the environmental qualities of the space itself to become another tool of the mise en scene.

My point of view, which developed during this study, was that the theatre should demand the entire company's complete involvement …

Positive And Negative Prejudice: Interactions Of Prejudice With Race And Social Desirability, Richard A. Dienstbier May 1970

Positive And Negative Prejudice: Interactions Of Prejudice With Race And Social Desirability, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two studies were conducted in order to investigate positive prejudice toward Negroes. By defining positive prejudice as favoritism toward Negro stimulus persons over white stimulus persons of identical personality descriptions, it was possible to compare patterns of Negro bias on a variety of measures. The results of Study I indicated that positive Negro prejudice was more likely when stimulus persons at the positive personality level were compared. The results of Study II indicated that dogmatism and rigidity and attitudes associated with authoritarian ism are negatively related to positive prejudice. Dimensions of formality of relationships and antisubordination of Negroes were useful …

Chemosterilants As An Approach To Rodent Control, Rex E. Marsh, Walter E. Howard Mar 1970

Chemosterilants As An Approach To Rodent Control, Rex E. Marsh, Walter E. Howard

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)

Capitalizing on research directed toward oral contraceptives for humans, a wide variety of compounds are now under study for their practical value in inhibiting rodent reproduction to suppress detrimental populations. This paper discusses the specifications of ideal rodent chemosterilants and the advantages of chemosterilants over other methods of control, and compares the potential values of chemosterilants acting on females, males, and both sexes. Specific situations are detailed where chemosterilants will be most valuable in rodent control, together with proposed methods of application. Chemosterilants are not expected to become a panacea for control, but since they are based on sound biological …

Trapping - The Oldest Profession, William D. Fitzwater Mar 1970

Trapping - The Oldest Profession, William D. Fitzwater

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)

While trapping is probably the oldest pursuit of man, predating hunting and agriculture, it has not undergone many drastic changes since the first primitive attempts. An arbitrary classification of traps [improvised traps, snares-and nets, cage traps, spring traps and glues] is discussed and examples of each group given. As the behavioral and physical characteristics of vertebrate animals vary so much, it is impossible to discuss trapping procedures in any detail, but certain principles apply to most situations. These are: (1) need for an understanding of the target species' habit patterns, (2) selection of a trap size and design suitable for …

American Sculpture, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The occasion for the present exhibition, the dedication of the Sheldon Sculpture Garden, marks the completion of one of the most important gifts ever made to the University of Nebraska and to the people of the state. The importance of the gift lies not only in the fact of the distinguished building and the art objects which it houses, but also in the fact of their presence as a potential, a place and a situation where the creative spirit, traditional and activist, may find a laboratory, a workshop and an audience.

The garden is first of all a physical enlargement …

Some Parameters Of The Second-Order Conditioning Of Fear In Rats, Alan Kamil Jan 1969

Some Parameters Of The Second-Order Conditioning Of Fear In Rats, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

The effects of CS1 duration, partial reinforcement, and trace conditioning on second-order conditioned suppression were investigated, employing 64 rats as Ss. In Experiment 1, the clearest second-order conditioning was obtained when CS1 duration was the same during both the first- and the second-order conditioning phases of the experiment. In Experiment 2, somewhat better second-order conditioning was obtained when first-order conditioning had been under conditions of partial reinforcement, delay CS-US pairing. In neither experiment were CS1 suppression and CS2 suppression during second-order testing well correlated. This aspect of the results raised the question of the influence of nonclassical conditioning factors on …

Life Insurance As A Personal Savings Vehicle, Vane B. Lucas Jan 1969

Life Insurance As A Personal Savings Vehicle, Vane B. Lucas

Nebraska Law Review

Through the medium of life insurance, millions of individuals have accumulated savings while providing protection for their families. Insurance companies have pooled these savings and injected them back into the financial bloodstream of the economy. This pool of investment funds has helped to achieve increasingly greater productivity and has raised the standard of living in our society. This article seeks to explain how life insurance functions as a vehicle for personal savings. The protection element of life insurance is related to the level premium concept of funding insurance. The savings element of life insurance is then discussed and related to …

Costs Of New Materials: The Manufacturer's Dilemma, Dan Macdougall

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I thought it was possible that some of you might not be acquainted with some of the frustrations which are involved in jousting with the bureaucracy in Washington. So I thought I would review that situation very briefly for you, particularly in regard to the compound Queletox. We will confess that we had some real qualms about accepting this material for control as a bird toxicant initially. And the reasons we were concerned about this were because the compound was being used in other areas as an agricultural chemical. It was registered for mosquito control, and it was being used …

New Materials For Bird Control, John W. Degrazio, Philip J. Spear Sep 1968

New Materials For Bird Control, John W. Degrazio, Philip J. Spear

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

A variety of methods is necessary to solve the many bird damage problems that occur in agriculture and other fields of interest. It is apparent that no one method can be used to provide answers for all damage situations; each problem and problem area is unique and requires thorough knowledge and investigation before intelligent measures of bird control can be applied. Thus, basic research in the laboratory and initial field studies are necessary to arrive at the most safe, efficient, and economical method of bird damage control possible for each situa-tion. The use of chemicals for damage control is one …

Status Of Bio-Sonics In Pest Bird Control, Gordon W. Boudreau Sep 1968

Status Of Bio-Sonics In Pest Bird Control, Gordon W. Boudreau

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Bioacoustics is defined as the study of biologically significant sounds ori-ginated by animals, and the mechanisms which produce and receive these sounds. Many of these sounds are audible to the human ear but some are above the human hearing range and fall into the ultrasonics class. There are sounds used by animals which are near or below the normal human hearing range in pitch, as in certain fish. Bioacoustics comprises a broad field of investigation and is an area which has only recently been explored. Improvements in electronic audio equipment have provided the impetus which launched recent bioacoustical investigations and …

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges Jun 1968

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Because children’s literature is considered to be a development of the past two centuries, it is generally believed that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature. The majority of people who have written extensively about children's literature have been primarily concerned with those differences. I too believe that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature; but those differences seem to me to be neither as extensive nor as significant as has been commonly assumed. What are the differences? Can they be described? Are there also significant similarities between children's literature and adult literature?

I believe that …

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges Jun 1968

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I believe that there are features common to both children is and adult literature, and that those similarities are much more important to a proper understanding of children's literature than are the differences that exist. This study. will carry the burden of proof for that belief. If goad children's literature is susceptible to serious interpretive criticism, and I believe that it is, it is so primarily because of what it contains in common with general. literary tradition rather than because of what it contains different from general. literary tradition. The complexity of the children's books that I will analyze in …

Can The Superior Learnability Of Meaningful And Pleasant Words Be Transferred To Nonsense Syllables?*, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier Apr 1968

Can The Superior Learnability Of Meaningful And Pleasant Words Be Transferred To Nonsense Syllables?*, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The Ss in 2 experiments first learned a PA list of words as responses to nonsense syllables. In 1 condition the words differed in meaningfulness (M) and in the other condition the words differed in pleasantness (PL). Next, Ss learned a 2nd PA list of the same syllables as responses to numbers. High-M words were learned faster than low-M words, but did not transfer either this difference in learning or the difference in rated M to the syllables. Pleasant words were learned faster than indifferent words in one experiment (men’s) but not in the other (women’s). In neither experiment did …

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport Jan 1968

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport

Avian Cognition Papers

Rats were trained in 2 SD-SΔ discrimination experiments in which the effects of an SD-postponement contingency during SΔ and temporal regularity of SΔ duration were assessed. Experiment I showed that discrimination is markedly facilitated by the presence of an SD-postponement contingency of either fixed or variable duration. Experiment II showed that variable-duration SΔ periods in a noncontingent schedule can also greatly enhance formation of an operant discrimination. These effects were attributed to differences in the probability of adventitious reinforcement of SΔ behavior by SD events.

The Right To Counsel During Pretrial Identification Proceedings—An Examination, John W. Atwood Jan 1968

The Right To Counsel During Pretrial Identification Proceedings—An Examination, John W. Atwood

Nebraska Law Review

In United States v. Wade, and companion cases, the Supreme Court of the United States focused constitutional attention on pretrial identification procedures, and, after a comprehensive examination of the area decided that pretrial identification procedures were a critical stage in the proceedings against an accused and that thereby the sixth amendment right to counsel applied to the states as incorporated by the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment. Thus, the court indicated that pretrial identification proceedings, conducted after June 12, 1967, will receive judicial scrutiny before any such pretrial identification evidence is admissible in court. The purpose of …

Civil Commitment Of The Mentally Ill In Nebraska, Larry L. Langdale Jan 1968

Civil Commitment Of The Mentally Ill In Nebraska, Larry L. Langdale

Nebraska Law Review

Nebraska's procedures for the civil commitment of the mentally ill are lacking in protections for the rights of those individuals who become involved in the process and thus are constitutionally suspect. The statutes are loosely drafted and unclear as to procedural steps within the commitment proceedings. It is true that such procedures are subject to unique problems that are not readily adaptable to normal judicial processes. It is submitted, however, that individual liberties need not be subordinate to a workable commitment process. While medical and legal views of the process are to a certain extent conflicting, they are by no …

Constitutional Law—The Sterilization Of The Mentally Deficient—A Reasonable Exercise Of The Police Power?—State V. Cavitt, 182 Neb. 713, 157 N.W.2d 171 (1968), Larry L. Langdale

Nebraska Law Review

The Compulsory Eugenic Sterilization (CES) of certain classes of individuals within our society has been practiced in the United States since 1907. This practice is based upon a theory of eugenics which assumes that certain types of people are socially more desirable than others and that the improvement of future generations can be accomplished through decreasing the rate of propagation of the inferior individuals and thus increasing the proportion of the desirable types. Proponents of the principle, relying on scientific claims that certain types of mental disabilities are inheritable traits, advocate the sterilization of those persons possessing these …

The New Dilemma In The Juvenile Court, Charles W. Tenney Jr. Jan 1968

The New Dilemma In The Juvenile Court, Charles W. Tenney Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

Recent years have witnessed a mounting crescendo of concern over the administration of our juvenile courts. In general, this concern has manifested itself in two somewhat contrasting attitudes. On the one hand, juvenile court judges are castigated for handing out light "sentences" and kid glove treatment to tough young hoodlums who steal our automobiles, deface our landscape, defile our daughters, and disparage our cherished institutions—all, probably, while hopped up on narcotics or barbiturates. On the other hand, the juvenile court and its judges are seen as instruments of oppression, inequity, and injustice, masquerading behind a facade of benevolence and concern …

Inflation: Its Measurement and Some Developments (E. L. Hauswald)

"Inflation is a term which has been, and continues to be, subject to a variety of interpretations" Regardless of the interpretation and despite the likelihood of being lulled into apathy by constant references to it, mere mention of inflation still evokes marked reactions. Given, for example, a rise in the level of prices and a reluctance to alter consumption patterns, individual and group activities occur at the private and public levels, reflecting attempts to increase the real income and hence restore real consumption patterns.

Relevance And Higher Education: Proceedings Of The Third Annual Meeting Of The National Collegiate Honors Council, 1968, Walter D. Weir

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

The papers in this volume were presented at the third annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington, October 18-20, 1968. The papers indicate our focus on the problems of the relevance of curricula to learning and the relevance of higher education to the world. Black and white students alike urged us to make our programs, our curricula, and our concerns more relevant to the moral and social issues of our time, more relevant to a truly liberal education.

Book Review: The Supreme Court: A Question Of Relevance—A Review Of The Warren Court, Constitutional Decision As An Instrument Of Reform By Archibald Cox, Leonard V. Kaplan Jan 1968

Book Review: The Supreme Court: A Question Of Relevance—A Review Of The Warren Court, Constitutional Decision As An Instrument Of Reform By Archibald Cox, Leonard V. Kaplan

Nebraska Law Review

Archibald Cox has written a short, controversial, and rather comprehensive analysis of the Warren Court. The book is a blend of legal analysis covering the "political issues" that have confronted the court, how the court did confront these issues, and how the author agrees or disagrees with the court's judgment. An added reform dimension to the analysis reveals some of the political subtlety which necessarily underlies many of the Court's constitutional probes. The core question which presents itself traditionally and in this analysis goes to the constant question of judicial passivity or activism. What is the charge of the Constitutional …

Rated Pleasantness And Association Value Of 101 English Nouns, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier Jan 1968

Rated Pleasantness And Association Value Of 101 English Nouns, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Ratings of pleasantness (PL) on a 7-point scale and of association value (a′) on a 5-point scale are reported for 101 two-syllable nouns. The ratings were obtained from two samples of 100 women each and two samples of 100 men each. Sizable differences were obtained between words on both scales. For women and men respectively, PL and a′ were correlated .570 and .585; PL and printed frequency were correlated .233 and .207; frequency and a′ were correlated .533 and .764. Women’s and men’s ratings correlated .973 for PL and .899 for a′.
