Talking With Young Children About Social Ideas, Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Anna Sargent Russell
Talking With Young Children About Social Ideas, Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Anna Sargent Russell
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
During the early childhood years, children’s understanding of many social and moral issues undergoes immense changes. We became interested in learning more about these changes and supporting them through our laboratory preschool curriculum. One major change, for example, is that children come to classify themselves and others into sex, age, and kinship categories and to learn social role expectations. Children also show greatly deepened understanding of such moral issues as fair sharing, obedience, authority, and friendship.
These areas of development are part of what can be called social cognition, or “children’s understanding of social behavior—what children think about their own …

Review Of Yuwipi: Vision And Experience In Oglala Ritual By William K. Powers, Raymond J. De Mallie
Review Of Yuwipi: Vision And Experience In Oglala Ritual By William K. Powers, Raymond J. De Mallie
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This volume provides an introduction to contemporary Lakota religious life among the Oglalas of Pine Ridge Reservation. It focuses on three basic rituals that form the core of traditional religion as individuals face the problems and challenges of day-to-day life: the sweat lodge, vision quest, and yuwipi meeting. Although written from an anthropological viewpoint, with an anthropologist's concern for ritual detail, this is a literary treatment, more descriptive than analytical. It paints a vivid picture of these contemporary rituals, recreating in novelistic detail an actual family crisis that prompted a young Oglala man to carry his concerns to a medicine …

Math And Science Education, Geoffrey F. Davies, David Moshman, Lauren B. Resnick
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Resnick provides an excellent brief account of current work in cognitive psychology and its important implications for math and science education. As she indicates, most cognitive psychologists view knowledge as consisting of highly organized schemata into which new experiences are assimilated and view the learner as actively constructing new knowledge. This view is consistent with the ideas that Piagetian theorists and educators have been propounding for many years, although Resnick’s discussion is rooted in the more detailed analysis of specific knowledge and learning in specific content areas that typifies the information-processing paradigm of modern cognitive science.

Western Myth And Northern History The Plains Indians Of Berger And Wiebe, Sherrill E. Grace
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
We have used up the mythological space of the West along with its native inhabitants, and there are no new places for which we can light out ahead of the rest. . . . [But 1 we have defined the "territory ahead" for too long in terms of mythologies created out of our meeting with and response to the Indians to abandon them without a struggle.

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden
General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this research is to trace the mainstream of German and related geopolitical philosophy and the various aspects that influenced the philosophy from 1800 to 1945. Two themes evolved: Political Geography and Nationalism. Along with economic considerations, these themes were fused into Geopolitik by Karl Haushofer and his followers in Germany following the end of World War I.
The goal of this work is to trace Geopolitik to discover the significance of its implications, what was behind it, and what were its real objectives. Geopolitik is a German-developed "science'' based on doctrines and practices with its origins in …

The physical environment of the Great Plains region in the USA is unique to the nation. It presents a set of climate and land conditions so extreme that for many years it was known as the "great American desert." As late as 1823, Major Long of the Army Engineers reported that most of the land between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains "is almost wholly unfit for cultivation, and of course uninhabitable by a people depending on agriculture for their subsistence." Today, by adapting techniques to fit a semiarid location and through the development of new technologies, the Great …

Review Of Mari Sandoz: Story Catcher Of The Plains, By Helen Winter Stauffe, Frederick C. Luebke
Review Of Mari Sandoz: Story Catcher Of The Plains, By Helen Winter Stauffe, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Few writers have succeeded as well as Mari Sandoz (1896-1966) in recreating for modern readers what life was like for both Indians and whites on the Great Plains in the late nineteenth century. Her biographies, among them Old Jules and Crazy Horse, and her histories, including The Buffalo Hunters and The Cattlemen, have earned her a prominent place among historians of the West. Her novels, such as Capital City, Son of the Gamblin' Man, and The Story Catcher, are commonly regarded by critics are less successful than her ventures into history.
The German Ethnic Group In Brazil: The Ordeal Of World War, Frederick C. Luebke
The German Ethnic Group In Brazil: The Ordeal Of World War, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In April, 1917, shortly after Brazil broke off diplomatic relations with Germany, Brazilians of German origin or descent were victims of numerous, destructive riots. Although death and personal injury were minimal, property damage was enormous as hundreds of residences, business houses, factories, and warehouses were damaged or destroyed by mobs gone out of control. Porto Alegre was the scene of the worst riots, but disturbances occurred almost simultaneously in Sao Paulo, Pelotas, and other cities of the South, where large numbers of German Brazilians lived. Six months later, following Brazil's declaration of war against the German Empire, another series of …

A Prelude To Conflict: The German Ethnic Group In Brazilian Society, 1890-1917, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
The anti-German riots in Brazil in 1917 are better understood within a larger context of ethnic history: the behavior of the dominant Luso-Brazilians (persons of Portuguese language and culture) and the minority TeutoBrazilians (as the Germans were often called) may be best interpreted if examined historically in terms of ethnic group relations, perceptions, and images.
Because of the accidents of time and place, the Germans in Brazil had been allowed to develop their own society without much interference. By the 1880s, the last years of the Brazilian Empire, they had become a society within a society - a large, diverse, …

Psi: An Attractive Alternative For The Basic Speech Communication Course, William J. Seiler
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
The Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), often referred to as the Keller Plan after its founder Fred Keller, was developed to teach introductory psychology courses. Since it was first used, however, PSI has seen widespread use in many disciplines. Sherman estimates that six thousand PSI courses have been taught at all levels of education by virtually all disciplines. Boylan reports that more than thirteen hundred individuals presently use the PSI method on the university and college level; that 80.5% of the individuals surveyed represent four-year institutions, with the remainder representing two-year institutions; that 66% of the colleges and universities are …

Heg83-181 Managing Conflict Successfully, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication describes the differences between conflict and disagreement, and provides procedures for resolving them successfully.
How do you typically respond when you seriously disagree with someone? Do you...
1. get mad inside but keep quiet and give the other the "silent" treatment?
2. withdraw to a safe distance because you don't like to argue?
3. get angry, criticize, call names, use sarcasm or some other aggressive behavior?
4. give in; say "I guess you are right" with a big sigh, be submissive in order to avoid conflict.
5. deny or pretend that "everything is okay"--no conflict exists.
These are …

The Foraging Behavior Of Lacewing Larvae On Vertical Rods, Alan B. Bond
The Foraging Behavior Of Lacewing Larvae On Vertical Rods, Alan B. Bond
Alan Bond Publications
The foraging behavior of lacewing larvae (Chrysopa carnea Stephens, Chrysopidae, Neuroptera) on vertical lucite rods was observed under a variety of experimental conditions to investigate the decision processes responsible for the distribution of foraging effort. Food deprivation increased the duration of searching on all parts of the rod, whereas contact with prey at the rod tip induced only a local enhancement of searching activity. Searching at the rod tip did not decline with repeated trials on the same rod, but the duration of searching on the rest of the rod was reduced, evidently reflecting recognition and avoidance of previously-searched …

Review Of The Forgotten Frontier: Urban Planning In The American West Before 1890 By John W. Reps, Charles S. Sargent
Review Of The Forgotten Frontier: Urban Planning In The American West Before 1890 By John W. Reps, Charles S. Sargent
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The title of this book is misleading. If the work carries one persistent message, it is that the cities of the American West were not planned at all. Conceived as speculations in land, yes; almost always designed in the form of a repetitive gridiron, yes; but planned in any twentieth-century sense of the word, definitely not. Only the southwestern Spanish towns and the Mormon towns of Deseret come close to being examples of "urban planning." City planning, after all, only came along early in the twentieth century, and Reps clearly illustrates that few towns were established after 1890. The term …
American Literary Images Of The Canadian Prairies, 1860-1910, James Doyle
American Literary Images Of The Canadian Prairies, 1860-1910, James Doyle
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In 1879, the prolific dime novelist Edward L. Wheeler produced a narrative entitled Canada Chet, The Counterfeiter Chief, set in "a location as hitherto quite neglected by the pen of the novelist and veracious historian-i.e., in the British possessions to the North-west of Minnesota." If, as Wheeler suggests, American writers were indifferent to the Canadian West in the nineteenth century, this lack of attention can be related to a number of considerations, the most obvious of which is the fact that Americans were sufficiently occupied by the undeveloped regions within their own border. The westward experience in the United …

Making Workshops Work, Jacqueline Davis, Robert Young
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Seminars and workshops--a practical, no-nonsense, relatively easy to schedule, participatory means of conveying and sharing ideas. Right? Only if planned and executed well. On the surface, a group session may seem to be one of the easiest best and ways to study new approaches to teaching and learning. It can be scheduled for one or more large blocks of time, freeing participants for other activities during the term. It provides opportunity for experimentation, a time and place to play out new ideas for the classroom before trying them with students. And it is a structure which promotes discussion, people talking …
Textual Criticism And Composition Research, Patrick Scott
Textual Criticism And Composition Research, Patrick Scott
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
It's a commonplace among textual bibliographers that the questions they ask and answer apply across many different disciplines. As Fredson Bowers long ago argued, "No matter what the field of study, the basis lies in the analysis of the records in printed or in manuscript form."l Not just in high literature, but in history, philosophy, and the history of science, modern bibliographical editing is widely recognized as indispensable. Yet in bibliography's, and Professor Bowers', own traditional fiefdom, the English graduate program, one area has been almost totally neglected. Whereas twenty-five years ago, it was students of modern literature, especially the …
Credentialism As Monopoly, Class War, And Socialization Scheme: Some Historical Reflections On Modern Ways Of Determining Who Can Do A Job, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society. The application of the principles of Smith, Marx, and Durkheim, in …
