Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds
Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds
French Language and Literature Papers
Over the past twenty-five years, as readings of Flaubert's texts have become increasingly concerned with the definition of various narrative structures, the study of point of view has been inextricably tied to determining how his narratives generate (or, to some minds, subvert) meaning. Thus it is that almost all hermeneutical approaches have been concerned with point of view in one way or another, the procedure usually being to establish the principal or authoritative narrational axis (or perhaps a pseudo-authoritative one) and then to plot and analyze the departures from it. Point of view is not a new concern, of course, …

Book Review: Glyphipterigidae Auctorum Sensu Lato, J. B. Heppner
Insecta Mundi
This is another volume in the extensive series planned on Palearctic Microlepidoptera (including Pyralidae). The expertise of Dr. Diakonoff, particularly in Tortricidae, provides a welcome coverage for the included species. This is especially true for the previously conglomerated assortment of species placed in Glyphipterigidae by E. Meyrick and the fact that until recently this classification was followed by most works on the Palearctic fauna. The previous concept of Glyphipterigidae has been considerably altered in the past decade; where Meyrick had over 1,200 species worldwide in one family, we now have four separate families and part of a fifth family for …

Identification Of Learning Styles Strategies Which Enable College Students With Differing Personality Temperaments To Cope With Learning Blocks, Gholam Hossein Zamani Zarghani
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to identify the major coping strategies which college students with different personality temperament used to deal with their learning blocks. Students' temperament type was obtained from the pool of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator results available at the Agricultural College, UN-L. An instrument measuring learning blocks was designed and administered in the Fall, 1987. The Coping strategy Inventory (CSI) was developed and administered in the spring, 1988. One hundred and twenty seven agricultural college students responded to the first phase of the study, and 230 agricultural college students took the CSI. The Statistical package for …

Religious Homogamy And Marital Happiness, Suzanne T. Ortega, Hugh P. Whitt, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Religious Homogamy And Marital Happiness, Suzanne T. Ortega, Hugh P. Whitt, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Data from a representative sample of 1,070 married Protestants and Catholics were used to examine the relationship between religious homogamy and marital happiness. Although couples may vary in the extent to which they share religious views (e.g., beliefs, values), previous research has treated religious homogamy as a dichotomy; a couple is either homogamous or it is not. A partial explanation for this is that few studies have gone beyond the broad divisions of Protestant, Catholic, and Jew. In the present study religious bodies were classified on the basis of doctrine and ritual, yielding six categories: Baptist, Calvinist, Catholic, fundamentalist, Lutheran, …
Values, Beliefs, And Attitudes In A Sociotechnical Setting, F. Gregory Hayden
Values, Beliefs, And Attitudes In A Sociotechnical Setting, F. Gregory Hayden
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
Yngve Ramstad has recently inquired about how to define the components of the social fabric matrix and digraph system [Ramstad 1986; Hayden 1982a, 1982b]. To answer that question with regard to three of the matrix's components is the purpose of this article. The article will present, expand, and refine the author's introductory work on values, beliefs, and attitudes for the social fabric matrix [Hayden 1977, 19851. There are numerous meanings the word "values" evokes among institutionalist readers; for examples: social value, instrumental valuing, technological values, and valuation. Those concepts are concerned with "what ought to be," while the definition of …
A Sociobiological Perspective On The Development Of Human Reproductive Strategies, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending
A Sociobiological Perspective On The Development Of Human Reproductive Strategies, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Humans show a great deal of variability in their reproductive behavior, including types of sexual activity, types of ties between males and females, and ways of arranging for the rearing of offspring. We will consider three principal topics: (1) Father absence versus father presence, contrasting children who are reared in a family system in which there is a closely involved and economically contributing father in contrast to a family system in which women rear their children in cooperation with other women (usually kin) and without consistent help from a man who is father to children. (2) Peer rearing versus parent …

Relationship Of Teaching Styles And Learning Styles To Classroom Environment, Lori A. Walla
Relationship Of Teaching Styles And Learning Styles To Classroom Environment, Lori A. Walla
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Classroom environmental conditions establish the social climate or atmosphere of a setting. Stern in 1970 stated that student's perceptions of classroom climate or learning environment are useful in predicting achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an effect between teaching style and student learning style on classroom environment. The population of this study consisted of secondary high schools within 150 miles of Lincoln, Nebraska, which offer vocational agriculture programs. Seven schools elected to participate. Thirty-four vocational teachers were included in this study. Students completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Classroom Environment Index. The Myers-Briggs Type …
Evaluation Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test With A Social Phobic Population, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg, Robert E. Becker
Evaluation Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test With A Social Phobic Population, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg, Robert E. Becker
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The convergent and discriminant validity of the Social Interaction Self-Statement Test (SISST) were evaluated in a sample of men and women awaiting treatment for fear and avoidance of social interactions. Partial correlations revealed that negative, but not positive, self-statement scores were generally related to self-report measures of anxiety and depression. Heart rate and subjective anxiety ratings derived from a behavioral simulation of a personally relevant anxiety-provoking situation were unrelated to SISST scores. However, subjects’ reports of negative thoughts obtained via the thought-listing procedure were related to the SISST negative self-statement scores, suggesting that the negative subscale of the SISST and …
Foraging Behavior And Switching By The Grasshopper Sparrow Ammodramus Savannarum Searching For Multiple Prey In A Heterogeneous Environment, Anthony Joern
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Switching among four alternative grasshopper species by the grasshop- per sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) through frequency-dependent predation was ex- amined. Grasshoppers were presented against a heterogeneous natural background in an outdoor aviary where total density was held constant but relative density of each grasshopper species varied. Switching among prey, primarily between two of the four species, and inter-bird variability in switching was observed. Species-specific prefer- ences and interactions among the alternative grasshopper species affected the final diet choice as one grasshopper species was always preferentially selected and another disregarded independent of changes in relative density. Attributes of avian foraging behavior, including: …

Photonovels Produced By Client/Professional Partnerships: An Educational Approach To Commensal Vertebrate Ipm, Stephen C. Frantz, John P. Comings, Debra L. Roter
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)
ABSTRACT: Since commensal vertebrate pest problems are largely "people problems," a well-planned and executed educational intervention could be the single most important component in an integrated pest management (IPM) program. The basic purpose of educational interventions is to bring sufficient information and understanding to affected clients so that they can and will intercept and control pests in the infested habitat. The encouragement of client participation in producing educational materials is consistent with learning theory and pest management principles. Such production methods allow materials to be closely aligned with client concerns and establish a climate for mutual exchange of ideas between …
Attractiveness Of Carbon Disulfide To Wild Norway Rats, J. Russell Mason, N. Jay Bean, Bennett G. Galef Jr.
Attractiveness Of Carbon Disulfide To Wild Norway Rats, J. Russell Mason, N. Jay Bean, Bennett G. Galef Jr.
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)
In laboratory experiments, carbon disulfide (CS2) increases the attractiveness of feeding stations to rats and mice. Bait consumption is also increased, and the effects are more pronounced for females than for males. The present study was designed to assess whether CS2 would enhance consumption of a standard bait formulation by wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus). The results showed that consumption was tripled when bait was paired with CS2. We speculate that CS2 could similarly enhance the effectiveness of rodenticide bait formulations to which it is applied. Extensive field tests of CS2 as a rodent attractant appear warranted.
Solutions To Urban Bird Problems, William D. Fitzwater
Solutions To Urban Bird Problems, William D. Fitzwater
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)
A survey of municipalities across the country indicated that pigeons were the most widespread aerial nuisance in urban areas. These were followed in order by: blackbirds, starlings, house sparrows, woodpeckers, crows/ravens, swallows/swifts, waterfowl (Canadian geese, mallards, and coots), and gulls. With somewhat lesser frequency were robins, vultures, raptors, herons/egrets, mockingbirds, waxwings, and monk parakeets. Local bird problems were mostly handled by: USDA-APH1S-ADC, Health Department, City/County Animal Control, Landowner/householder, PCO, State Wildlife Agency, Police Department, and Mayor's office.
Photographic Records — Their Importance In Today's Environmentally Sensitive Bird Management Programs, Charles W. Areson
Photographic Records — Their Importance In Today's Environmentally Sensitive Bird Management Programs, Charles W. Areson
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)
We are living in a day of change. Environmental awareness is a part of our everyday life in a way unprecedented in history. The courts, in their infinite wisdom, have initiated the joint and several liability (deep pocket) rules that make everyone at risk in almost all situations. Bird management programs, by their very nature, are extremely sensitive. Any project, if not evaluated, planned, carried out, and documented properly can result in adverse regulatory agency action, bad publicity, and even fines or lawsuits. Proper photographic documentation can play a vital part in helping to provide the necessary records to help …
Flaubert's Dis/En Closures, Marshall C. Olds
Flaubert's Dis/En Closures, Marshall C. Olds
French Language and Literature Papers
The topos of the window and analogous framing devices is one of the recurrent characteristics of Flaubert's work, and, as examples of this discretionary practice, one need recall only some of the many scenes that are framed by windows: the view of Yonville through the carriage window or the stainedglass window that is, very nearly, La Légende de Saint Julien l'hospitalier. But windows are only incidentally our concern, for as the views of Yvetot and Constantinople equally signify something beyond themselves, so does this topos tie into a larger question, which is the evolution of Flaubert's practice of closure.

Returning To M'Naghten To Avoid Moral Mistakes: One Step Forward, Or Two Steps Backward For The Insanity Defense, Robert F. Schopp
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
The history of the not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI) defense has been characterized by an extended search for a satisfactory standard. For many years, the M'Naghten test was the standard applied by the majority of courts in the United States. The M'Naghten test has been widely criticized, however, as being too narrow, over-emphasizing the cognitive aspect of personality, and artificially restricting the scope of expert testimony. In 1955, the American Law Institute (ALI) proposed an alternative standard as part of its Model Penal Code. Since that time, there has been a marked trend in many jurisdictions from the …
Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer
Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer
German Language and Literature Papers
Uwe Johnson is seldom discussed as a GDR author, for it was not until after his 1959 decision «to relocate,» as he put it, to the West that Johnson became established as a literary force. Literary historians often mention Johnson along with Gunther Grass and Martin Walser when they discuss the important novelists that burst onto the literary scene in West Germany at the end of the 1950’s. But Johnson’s work—from Mutamaßsunmgen über Jakob to Jahrestage—is unthinkable without his education and experiences in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. With the posthumous publication of his first novel Ingrid …

A Comparative-Ecological Approach To The Study Of Learning, Alan Kamil, John E. Mauldin
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the effects of a parameter which is present in every learning experiment, but about which we know relatively little--the species being tested. The effects of the species variable have been studied relatively infrequently by animal learning psychologists for at least three reasons. (1) Psychologists have tended to assume that a few general processes will account entirely for most, if not all, of the important phenomena of animal learning in a broad range of species. This assumption has been criticized frequently in recent years (e.g., Seligman, 1970; Seligman & Hager, 1972), but still …

Plans Of Action For Southeast District Issues 1988 - 1992
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
The Southeast Research and Extension District Alternative Agricultural Opportunities Team met on Thursday, September 15th and reviewed the state plan for the initiative "Increasing Diversity with Alternate Crop and Livestock Enterprises".
The team members present decided that the state plan would meet the planning needs for the Southeast District if it was supplemented with a list of enterprises which have the greatest potential for additional expansion in Southeast Nebraska.
The following alternate crop and livestock enterprises were identified by the committee as having the best opportunity for additional development in the district. In crops; asparagus, melons, and onions were identified …

Miniature Masterworks, Daphne A. Deeds
Miniature Masterworks, Daphne A. Deeds
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Miniature does not merely mean small. When applied to painting, the term "miniature" conveys art historical and psychological meanings of greater import than simple dimensions may indicate. "Miniature Masterworks" offers a diverse group of undersized paintings which are related by virtue of their size, but which reveal larger issues pertinent to the history of twentieth century art.
While artists have used the miniature format throughout the history of art, the tradition of small scale paintings was rather recently reestablished in America, via the French. In part as a reaction to large, Neoclassical paintings commissioned by grand patrons, and depicting ideal …

The Valley Series: Recent Paintings By Keith Jacobshagen, Daphne A. Deeds
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Keith Jacobshagen has been a member of the Art Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1968. During the past ten years, he has established a national. reputation as a painter of the mid-western landscape. His studies of the plains are thoughtful assessments of familiar views. But, while Jacobshagen's paintings document the particular conditions of weather, light, topography, and their effect on the land, they also transcend the specific to function as metaphors for the human condition: a solitary viewer surveying an expanse of farm land; a transitory, cloudy sky meeting the cultivated fields; the sky as mystery touching the …
Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund
Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Navajo weaving from northeastern Arizona and contiguous areas if the American Southwest is widely recognized for colors and patterns that range from subtle shades to dynamic brilliance, from soft stripes to bold geometries to fanciful pictorials. The apparent diversity in this native textile art, developed over the past three centuries, has defied any unified description of The Navajo Style. While Navajo blankets and rugs may be superficially categorized and classified, put into chronological sequences and evolutionary schemes, when the textiles are viewed synoptically, the delineation of Navajo aesthetics remains a formidable task.
The search for a Navajo style and sense …
