Linking Risk Preference, Women’S Empowerment, Farm Investment And Household Well-Being, Samuel Olusesi Olumide Aug 2024

Linking Risk Preference, Women’S Empowerment, Farm Investment And Household Well-Being, Samuel Olusesi Olumide

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A nuanced understanding of intra-household dynamics can inform the design of more effective empowerment and agricultural investment policies. By integrating household risk preferences and empowerment dynamics, this work offers valuable insights into the complex mechanisms driving household welfare and provides a framework for future interventions to promote gender equality and economic development in rural settings. This thesis addresses three core hypotheses: first, that the spouses of risk-seeking male heads are more likely to be disempowered compared to those of risk-averse male heads; second, that households with risk-seeking male heads and disempowered spouses are likely to invest more in farming activities; …

Investigating Associations Between Activity And Performance Traits Across Three Breeds Of Swine Using NuTrack, Dalton R. Obermier Aug 2024

Investigating Associations Between Activity And Performance Traits Across Three Breeds Of Swine Using NuTrack, Dalton R. Obermier

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Feed costs are the largest contributor towards the variable costs of pork production. To decrease feed cost while not sacrificing output requires an improvement in feed efficiency (FE). A potential approach to expand available phenotypes associated with FE is with activity tracking, yet the relationship between activity and performance is not well defined in swine. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify associations between activity and feed intake traits. Average daily feed intake (ADFI) was collected on 1,766 purebred boars of three genetic lines (Duroc, Landrace, and Yorkshire) using FIRE (Osborne Industries, Inc., Osborne, Kansas) at a testing …

Optimizing Scalability For Formal Analysis With Evolutionary Algorithm, Jianghao Wang Aug 2024

Optimizing Scalability For Formal Analysis With Evolutionary Algorithm, Jianghao Wang

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Predominantly employed to tackle hardware validation challenges in the early years, formal methods have since expanded to software engineering, introducing a significant level of rigor and precision to software analysis. Its use of mathematical notations and logical reasoning allows for abstract modeling of programs, enabling researchers and engineers to perform a multitude of analysis tasks to verify system dependability and rigorously prove the correctness of system properties. Despite the availability of many automated analysis tools including those considered lightweight, the practical adoption of formal methods in software development has been limited due to scalability concerns, especially when applied to large …

Candida Albicans Farnesol Synthesis And Secretion, Daniel J. Gutzmann Aug 2024

Candida Albicans Farnesol Synthesis And Secretion, Daniel J. Gutzmann

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Candida albicans is a polymorphic fungus and opportunistic commensal found primarily in the gastrointestinal and skin of healthy individuals. Several barriers prevent C. albicans from causing disease including a healthy immune system and microbiome. When these barriers become comprised, C. albicans can transition to a pathogen and disseminate through the intestinal mucosa leading to life-threatening bloodstream and invasive infections with mortality rates of up to 64%. Morphogenic plasticity is key to this transition and impacts virulence, adaptation to different host environments, and evasion of host immune responses. One regulator of morphogenesis is farnesol. Farnesol is a secondary metabolite of …

On Neumann Boundary Conditions For Nonlocal Models With Finite Horizon, Scott Alex Hootman-Ng Aug 2024

On Neumann Boundary Conditions For Nonlocal Models With Finite Horizon, Scott Alex Hootman-Ng

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Nonlocal models are have recently seen an explosive interest and development in the context of fracture mechanics, diffusion, image processing, population dynamics due to their ability to approximate differential-like operators with integral operators for inherently discontinuous solutions. Much of the work in the field focuses on how concepts from partial differential equations (PDEs) can be extended to the nonlocal domain. Boundary conditions for PDEs are crucial components for applications to physical problems, prescribing data on the domain boundary to capture the behavior of physical phenomena accurately with the underlying model. In this thesis we specifically examine a Neumann-type boundary condition …

Integration Of Matlab And Machine Learning To Accelerate Evaluation Of Biological Activity In Agricultural Soils And Promote Soil Health Improvement Goals, Andrew Stiven Ortiz Balsero

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Traditionally, assessments of soil biological activity have been confined to laboratory settings, creating a disconnect with practical in-field methods. To bridge this gap, cotton fabric degradation has been used to illustrate soil microbial activity under different management practices. While effective, these demonstrations are subjective and labor-intensive.

Researchers have explored using image processing software like ImageJ and Adobe Photoshop to streamline this process. Although these tools accurately quantified fabric degradation under varying soil conditions, the methods remained labor-intensive and complex. Consequently, these methods were still not ideal for on-farm use by agricultural practitioners.

To further address labor and complexity limitations, the …

Virtual Unknotting Numbers For Families Of Virtual Torus Knots, Kaitlin R. Tademy Aug 2024

Virtual Unknotting Numbers For Families Of Virtual Torus Knots, Kaitlin R. Tademy

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

A virtual torus knot T(p,q,VC) sits in the intersection of the well-understood torus knot and the not-so-well-understood virtual knot, making it an intriguing object to study.

The unknotting number of a classical knot K is defined unambiguously. However, "the" unknotting number when K is a virtual knot is not as clear to define, since virtual knots have both classical and virtual crossings. We will define virtual unknotting number vu(K) as the minimum number of (classical) crossing changes required to unknot K. Under this definition of virtual unknotting, not all …

Emergent Phenomena In Ferroelectric-Dielectric And Ferroelectric-Graphene Heterostructures, Tianlin Li Aug 2024

Emergent Phenomena In Ferroelectric-Dielectric And Ferroelectric-Graphene Heterostructures, Tianlin Li

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation explores the emergent phenomena in epitaxial ferroelectric oxide-based heterostructures, including the negative capacitance (NC) effect in ferroelectric-dielectric systems, ferroelectric gate imposed mobility limit in graphene field-effect transistors, and ferroelectric domain-induced graphene-superlattices.

We carry out a phenomenological study of the NC effect in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3/SrTiO3 capacitors. The Landau free-energy profile predicts a critical thickness ratio for the ferroelectric-dielectric phase transition, consistent with the observed abrupt change in remnant polarization. A static NC state is observed in the low thickness ratio region, which is compromised by the emergence of multidomain in the moderate ratio …

We're Swarming Again! Swarming, Collectivity, And Trope: The Case Of Extinction Rebellion, Tyler J. Behymer Aug 2024

We're Swarming Again! Swarming, Collectivity, And Trope: The Case Of Extinction Rebellion, Tyler J. Behymer

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis explores the rhetoric of the eco-movement Extinction Rebellion, focusing on the use of swarming and nature tropes to mobilize collective action and revivify contemporary notions of collectivity. Drawing on rhetoric of social movement scholarship, cultural studies, and psychoanalysis, this essay theorizes swarming as a tropological economy that expands the conditions of propriety in the context of collectivity. Through an analysis of Extinction Rebellion’s discourse, this study demonstrates how the naturalization of swarming tropes works in various ways to rewild conventional political discourse, galvanize disruptive collective assembly, and challenge green neoliberalism.

Development And Validation Of Aronia Melanocarpa Berry Recipes For Home Canning: Integrating Thermal Lethality Studies, Microbiological Safety, And Antioxidant Analysis, Juan Diego Villegas Posada Aug 2024

Development And Validation Of Aronia Melanocarpa Berry Recipes For Home Canning: Integrating Thermal Lethality Studies, Microbiological Safety, And Antioxidant Analysis, Juan Diego Villegas Posada

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Aronia melanocarpa, also known as chokeberry, is gaining popularity for its high antioxidant content and health benefits, including reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting cancer gene expression. However, its characteristic bitterness and astringency limit its broader appeal. Chokeberry's low pH places it in the acid foods category, making it ideal for safe home canning. An acidic environment combined with heat treatment inhibits harmful bacteria like Clostridium botulinum. Home canning preserves food by sealing it in airtight containers and heating it to destroy spoilage microorganisms.

Developing safe and palatable recipes is essential for making chokeberries suitable for home canning. A …

Preschool Executive Control And Adolescent Dietary Outcomes: Highlighting The Role Of Context, Marla Lopez Aug 2024

Preschool Executive Control And Adolescent Dietary Outcomes: Highlighting The Role Of Context, Marla Lopez

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Research has identified executive control (EC) as an important predictor of dietary outcomes among youth. Executive control in preschool age has been shown to predict important outcomes across development for youth, indicating that good, foundational EC abilities are associated with successful development in later life. Dietary outcomes across adolescence, an important transitional period for establishing healthy eating behaviors, are understudied. Therefore, the current study sought to link two critical developmental periods, examining how preschool EC is associated with dietary trajectories across adolescence. Further, the study aimed to identify how contextual factors, specifically indices of socio-economic status and the home and …

Gevrey Class Estimates Towards Null Controllability Of A Fluid Structure Interaction System, Dylan Mcknight Aug 2024

Gevrey Class Estimates Towards Null Controllability Of A Fluid Structure Interaction System, Dylan Mcknight

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Fluid-Structure Interaction concerns the interaction of parabolic fluids and hyperbolic elastic structures via numerous mechanisms such as boundary coupling and pressure. These models find application in blood flow, fluid flow in the eye, and air flow over plane wings. Parabolic equations are well known for “infinite speed of propagation,” which manifests itself via a uniform bound on the resolvent of the infinitesimal generator of the associated strongly continuous semigroup. Qualitatively, a solution of a parabolic pde with rough initial data is immediately smooth for any positive time. A priori, it is not clear whether a fluid structure interaction inherits any …

The dissertation presents a search for new physics impacting top quark productions within the framework of effective field theory (EFT). Potential new physics effects are parameterized in terms of 26 dimension-six EFT operators into the event yields of six distinct top production processes in the detector level. The analysis targets multilepton final states consisting of two leptons of the same charge, three leptons and four leptons. The events are further categorized and binned in terms of kinematic distributions in order to gain sensitivity to the new physics effects. A likelihood function is formulated based on the predicted distribution in each …

On Regularity Of Graph C*-Algebras, Gregory Joseph Faurot Aug 2024

On Regularity Of Graph C*-Algebras, Gregory Joseph Faurot

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

We prove that for any countable directed graph E with Condition (K), the corresponding graph C*-algebra C*(E) has nuclear dimension at most two. We also prove that the nuclear dimension of certain extensions is at most one, which can be applied to certain graphs to achieve the optimal upper bound of one. Finally, we generalize some previous results for O∞ -stability of graph algebras, and prove some partial results for Z-stability.

Development Of An Egg-Specific Mass Spectrometry Targeted Method For Processed Food Matrices, Liyun Zhang Aug 2024

Development Of An Egg-Specific Mass Spectrometry Targeted Method For Processed Food Matrices, Liyun Zhang

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Egg is a major food allergen in the United States, causing symptoms from mild reactions to severe anaphylaxis. An egg-free diet remains the only management approach for egg allergy. Therefore, individuals and families living with egg allergies rely heavily on allergen statements on packaged food products for informed food choices. Currently, no labeling regulations exist for unintentionally introduced allergens, posing risks to consumers with egg allergies. Therefore, it is critical to have an accurate and reliable detection method in allergen control and management to determine the concentration of total protein from allergenic food sources. Traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are routinely …

The emergence of self-proclaimed NGSS-aligned resources has outpaced academic examination regarding professional development (PD), curriculum implementation, and curriculum enactment. The purpose of this study was to use social cognitive theory to …

Phylogenetic And Biogeographic Patterns Of Devonian Proetid Trilobites, Katherine Jane Jordan Aug 2024

Phylogenetic And Biogeographic Patterns Of Devonian Proetid Trilobites, Katherine Jane Jordan

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Ecological disruption events such as mass extinctions can result in the permanent alteration in clades and ecosystems. A pivotal time of change during the history of life on Earth can be seen in the Devonian Period. During this time, major transitions in marine and terrestrial system resulted in a different world at the end of the period in comparison to the beginning. One such group most heavily impacted were trilobites. Trilobites were reduced to one order by the end of the Devonian: Proetida. My dissertation focuses on phylogenetic, biogeographic, and paleocommunity patterns of this group, known as the last of …

Nanoparticle-Based Approaches To Brain Injury And Studies For Improved Detectability Toward Better Delivery Characterization, Hunter A. Miller Aug 2024

Nanoparticle-Based Approaches To Brain Injury And Studies For Improved Detectability Toward Better Delivery Characterization, Hunter A. Miller

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

The clinical translation of nanoparticle (NP) therapeutics for brain injury has been slow despite preclinical promise. The causes of disconnect between preclinical and clinical outcomes is multifactorial, but insufficient delivery is noteworthy. Preclinical delivery characterization often lacks, obscuring mechanisms of failure, slowing development. Multimodal imaging is a promising strategy to improve delivery characterization, combining the strengths of various modalities. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and luminescence imaging are a suitable combination for multimodal imaging, expanding the spatial and temporal resolution of either alone, but further material development is needed to enhance detectability. One problem is the interference of cellular autofluorescence in …

Investigating Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer With Titanium Carbide Mxenes And Slanted Columnar Thin Films, Sean Luke Murray Aug 2024

Investigating Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer With Titanium Carbide Mxenes And Slanted Columnar Thin Films, Sean Luke Murray

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This work investigates the mechanisms to manipulate and control the magnitudes of Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer (NFRHT) using two-dimensional materials and nanostructured surfaces. NFRHT occurs when the geometrical features of the radiating objects or the separation distance between interacting bodies are comparable to or lower than the characteristic thermal radiation wavelength. NFRHT magnitudes surpass the blackbody limit by several orders of magnitude due to phenomena such as photon tunneling and new modes of energy transfer, like surface polaritons. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how material properties and surface nanostructures affect NFRHT.

The first part of this work examines the …

Making Sandwiches: A Novel Invariant In D-Module Theory, David Lieberman Aug 2024

Making Sandwiches: A Novel Invariant In D-Module Theory, David Lieberman

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Say I hand you a shape, any shape. It could be a line, it could be a crinkled sheet, it could even be a the intersection of a cone with a 6-dimensional hypersurface embedded in a 7-dimensional space. Your job is to tell me about the pointy bits. This task is easier when you can draw the shape; you can you just point at them. When things get more complicated, we need a bigger hammer.

In a sense, that “bigger hammer” is what the ring of differential operators is to an algebraist. Then we will say some things and stuff …

Microbial Transfer And Cross-Contamination In Milling Facilities And Pathogen Survival In Milled Products And Baking Mixes, Aryany Leticia Peña-Gomez Aug 2024

Microbial Transfer And Cross-Contamination In Milling Facilities And Pathogen Survival In Milled Products And Baking Mixes, Aryany Leticia Peña-Gomez

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Wheat-based products, traditionally considered low-risk due to their low moisture content, have been involved in numerous foodborne outbreaks in recent decades. Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) present in these products have caused significant numbers of hospitalizations and massive product recalls. The microbiological quality of flour is highly dependent on the incoming wheat, which is vulnerable to contamination from field to milling. Once pathogens are present in flour, they can survive for extended periods. Implementing strategies to mitigate the risk of pathogen contamination throughout the wheat processing chain is critical.

This study evaluated the distribution of E. coli …
