Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild Jan 1908

Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Introduction (excerpt)

The importance of certain species of fleas in relation to the epidemiology of plague has been so amply demonstrated (see Journal of Hygiene, volumes VI 1906, p. 426, and VII 1907, p. 395) that an explanation appears scarcely necessary for our publishing a paper dealing with a revision of the non-pectinated eyed Siphonaptera. With the demonstration that fleas are capable of transmitting plague, their study at once ceased to be the mere hobby of a small group of entomological specialists. An accurate knowledge of fleas, both with regard to their structure and biology, is at present a …

On The Origin And Definition Of The Geologic Term "Laramie", A. C. Veatch Jan 1907

On The Origin And Definition Of The Geologic Term "Laramie", A. C. Veatch

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

INTRODUCTION

Investigations of the United States Geological Survey during the summer of I906, covering the larger part of the Laramie exposures on the Laramie Plains, examined by the King and Hayden surveys, have revealed many new and important facts bearing on the Laramie problem.

By detailed areal surveys it was found: (1) that the lignitiferous series, which in the Laramie Plains lies between the Montana below and the Fort Union above, and has a maximum thickness of about 12,500 feet, is divided about the middle by an unconformity; (2) that this unconformity is in the same stratigraphic plane and continuous …

Report On The Orthoptera Of Trinidad, West Indies, Lawrence Bruner Jan 1906

Report On The Orthoptera Of Trinidad, West Indies, Lawrence Bruner

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Several years ago Mr. H. D. Chipman collected insects on the Island of Trinidad, British West Indies, and the writer secured a fairly complete set of the Orthoptera taken by him. Since that time a few additional forms have been obtained from G. E. Tryhane, of St. Anne's, Trinidad, and others from W. E. Broadway, of St. George's Grenada, who formerly collected on Trinidad. Altogether upwards of one hundred (112) species have thus been accumulated and form the basis of this paper.

Unlike others of the West Indies, this island is more closely related to the South American mainland in …

On The Conflict Of Parties In The Jacobin Club (November, 1789-July 17, 1791), Charles Kuhlmann Jul 1905

On The Conflict Of Parties In The Jacobin Club (November, 1789-July 17, 1791), Charles Kuhlmann

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The Breton Club having ceased its activity after the discussion of the veto in August, 1789, the popular party in the assembly found itself without a railying point. Although differences of opinion had shattered the loosely organized club at Versailles, the memory of its usefulness soon induced the same members to attempt the formation of a new and more regularly organized association in the capital,1 The exact date of the formation of the J acobin Club it is impossible to determine from the evidence so far discovered, but everything points to the close of November or the first days of …

The Morrison Formation And Its Relations With The Comanche Series And The Dakota Formation, T. W. Stanton Jan 1905

The Morrison Formation And Its Relations With The Comanche Series And The Dakota Formation, T. W. Stanton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The beds now generally designated on U. S. Geological Survey maps as the Morrison formation have been a subject of interest and discussion since I877, when abundant remains of dinosaurs were found in them. The first extensive collections of the vertebrate fauna were obtained in the neighborhood of Morrison near Denver, -in Garden Park, near Canyon City, Colorado, and at Como, or Aurora, Wyoming. Since then the formation has been recognized by means of its fossils, its lithologic features, and its stratigraphic relations in the Black Hills, on the Laramie Plains, and elsewhere in Wyoming, in Montana, in western Colorado, …

Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports

In this document, E. E. Blackman, the State Archeologist, reports to the Nebraska State Historical Society regarding recently completed work in the field of archeology. Blackman first reports on his 1903 archeological explorations and lecture presentations. Fieldwork emphasized an investigation of flint quarries and geological formations across the central and eastern parts of the state of Nebraska. In the same year, Blackman set out on an expedition along the Blue River, with the hopes of gathering additional relics from previously excavated sites as well as from those yet to be investigated. Of primary importance was artifact collection and interpretation. Although …

The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor Jan 1902

The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor

Zea E-Books in American Studies

Ida Craddock took her own life in October 1902, rather than face the 5-year federal prison term she seemed certain to receive following her conviction for distributing this work through the U.S. Mail. It is a short (24-page) pamphlet addressed to young women and men about to embark on a sexual relationship and an honest and frank effort to alleviate the ignorance which both sexes often brought to the marriage union. Craddock's discussion of the "sexual act" stressed that empathy and consideration for one's partner were the vital elements for an enduring marriage. Craddock neither shrank from the description of …

On A Coccidium (Klossiella Muris, Gen. Et Spec. Nov.) Parasitic In The Renal Epithelium Of The Mouse, Theobald Smith, Herbert P. Johnson Jan 1902

On A Coccidium (Klossiella Muris, Gen. Et Spec. Nov.) Parasitic In The Renal Epithelium Of The Mouse, Theobald Smith, Herbert P. Johnson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

In 1889, Smith published a preliminary description of a polysporous coccidium found in the epithelium of the convoluted tubules of the mouse's kidney. Several stages of the parasite were seen but the scantiness of the material left many gaps in the life-cycle. During investigations recently made to determine the mode of transmission of the Sarcosporidium of the mouse, Smith found a considerable number of gray mice, caught in the animal room connected with this laboratory, whose kidneys were abundantly invaded by this coccidium. This favorable opportunity of examining more thoroughly into the life-history of this sporozoon was utilized, and, as …

The Geological Bibllography Of Nebraska, Erwin H. Barbour, Cassius A. Fisher Jan 1901

The Geological Bibllography Of Nebraska, Erwin H. Barbour, Cassius A. Fisher

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Where there is a wide diversity of interests it is necessary for citizens, including farmers, mechanics, merchants, students, and professional men, to make constant reference to. the various authors of the state to learn what has been done and what has been written along the diverse lines of investigation in which they are interested. In response, then, to constant inquiry the following list of papers is prepared, being compiled from every available source. PaleontoIogical papers dealing mainly with the descriptions have not been included in every case. But the list of articles concerning our geography, physiography, stratigraphy, resources, water-supply, etc., …

Glacial Grooves And Striae In Southeastern Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour May 1900

Glacial Grooves And Striae In Southeastern Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

NEBRASKA is so close upon the western as well as the southern limit of the drift that evidences of glacial action which might be commonplace elsewhere are rare and interesting here. The mere fact that glacial grooves and striae have been found seems worthy therefore of mention. Glacial drift, readily recognizable as such, does not extend far west of the 97th meridian, and in but one place in the state, on the Dakota-Nebraska boundary, does it reach the 98th meridian. East of the 97th meridian it is distinct and unmistakable, and it may be offered as a safe statement that …

A Review Of Economic Ornithology In The United States, Theodore S. Palmer Jan 1899

A Review Of Economic Ornithology In The United States, Theodore S. Palmer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The history of American ornithology may be traced back to.the middle of the sixteenth century, but the chief progress in the science has been made during the last hundred years. So assiduously have our birds been studied that the avifauna of few regions is better known than that of the Eastern United States. With the growth of ornithology, the economic relations of birds, and especially their relations to agriculture, have attracted more and more attention. During the last half century "economic ornithology" has become recognized as a special branch of the science and has undergone rapid development. The relation of …

Review Of The Phytogeography Of Nebraska. 1. General Survey, By Roscoe Pound, Elizabeth Britton Jul 1898

Review Of The Phytogeography Of Nebraska. 1. General Survey, By Roscoe Pound, Elizabeth Britton

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

From the preface we learn that this work is the result of nearly five years of active study of the floral covering of Nebraska, carried on by the members of the Botanical Seminar in the Botanical Survey of the State. The systematic study of the vegetation of Nebraska was begun by Dr. Bessey in 1884, and has since been carried on by him and his students, all previous collecting having been more or less desultory and unreliable. The Botanical Survey was organized in 1892, and its work has been directed to the collecting of specimens and observations for a series …

Science And Culture, Charles E. Bessey

Papers in Systematics and Biological Diversity

It is with peculiar pleasure that I stand before this new department of Natural Science Instruction, and I deem it a great honor that you have asked me to preside over its deliberations. It is an important sign of the times that such a department as this should have been organized by the scientific men of the country. It is significant of a broader view of the work of scientific men that we find so many here to-day to take part in the first meeting of a department which has for its object the discussion of questions pertaining to the …

The Classification Of Diatoms (Bacillariaceæ), Clarence Elmore Jul 1896

The Classification Of Diatoms (Bacillariaceæ), Clarence Elmore

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

There have been many systems of classification employed for the Bacillariaceæ, but very few of these have any valid claim, to be regarded as natural systems. They may be divided into three classes (1) those based on the structure of the valves, of which Kuetzing's, Professor H. L. Smith's, and that employed by Kirchner are examples; (2) those based on the form of the frond, the connecting membrane, and the gelatinous envelope, represented by Reverend William Smith's; and (3) those based on the structure of the endochrome and the manner of forming auxospores, represented by that of Paul Petit. The …

Some Notes On Nebraska Birds: A List Of The Species And Subspecies Found In The State, With Notes On Their Distribution, Food-Habits, Etc., Lawrence Bruner Jan 1896

Some Notes On Nebraska Birds: A List Of The Species And Subspecies Found In The State, With Notes On Their Distribution, Food-Habits, Etc., Lawrence Bruner

Papers in Ornithology

For upwards of twenty-five years the writer has taken an interest in our birds and made notes relative to their abundance, migrations, nesting, food-habits, etc., simply for personal gratification.

About two years ago, during a conversation in which the relation of birds to horticulture incidentally arose, Professor F. W. Taylor suggested the advisability of devoting a portion of a succeeding annual report to our Nebraska birds. With this object in view both the professor and the writer broached the matter to other members of the Society. Several at once not only became interested in the matter, but suggested its early …

A Two-Headed Tortoise, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Jan 1896

A Two-Headed Tortoise, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

INQUIRIES from various quarters have been made so repeatedly for the sequel to the brief story of a young two-headed tortoise, Chrysemys picta, published in the American Journal of Science for October, 1888, that the author is led to believe that a public account thereof will serve more useful ends than many private ones. In order that the sequel may be more intelligible to all, a brief resume of the first paper will be given.

The young tortoise, hatched but a day or so, was found in the marshes bordering West River, New Haven, Conn. The carapace, which was somewhat …
