A Synopsis Of The Tabanidae Of Nebraska With A Description Of A New Species From Colorado, Everett E. Wehr Oct 1922

A Synopsis Of The Tabanidae Of Nebraska With A Description Of A New Species From Colorado, Everett E. Wehr

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Recently, the writer has had occasion to prepare a synopsis of the species of Tabanidae, otherwise known as horseflies, deerflies or gadflies, of the State of Nebraska. These flies are of importance to the farmer and stock raiser because of their blood-sucking propensities and their annoyance to stock. They breed in marshy lands and wet soil. This synopsis is based altogether on specimens collected in Nebraska and now actually present in the University of Nebraska collection. It is not probable, therefore, that it is a complete list. More extensive collecting over the state would probably reveal the presence of other …

A Synopsis Of The Syrphidae Of Nebraska With Descriptions Of New Species From Nebraska And Colorado, Everett E. Wehr

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

In June, 1907, Mr. Paul R. Jones published in the Journal of the New York Entomological Society "A Preliminary List of Nebraska Syrphidae with Descriptions of New Species.'" At that time there was available only a comparatively small collection of Syrphid flies, but apparently it contained a fairly good representation of the species found in the state. Subsequent collectors have contributed a considerable amount of new material from the state in which there are twelve additional species, two of which are· new. With these additions, the Nebraska list is increased to ninety species.

At the present time the classification of …

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine (Ascaris Lumbricoides), H. M. Martin Jun 1922

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine (Ascaris Lumbricoides), H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Up until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.

The Physiology Of The Respiration Of Fishes In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of The Medium, Edwin B. Powers Jan 1922

The Physiology Of The Respiration Of Fishes In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of The Medium, Edwin B. Powers

Papers in Systematics and Biological Diversity

Within recent years much has been added to the knowledge concerning the mechanism of the respiratory function of the blood. Haldane and Priestley (1905) have shown that, at least in the higher animals, the respiratory movements are affected by the carbon dioxide tension of the arterial blood. It has been shown definitely (Hasselbalch, 1912 and citations) that the exciting agent is the hydrogen ion concentration of the blood bathing the respiratory center.

Krogh and Leitch (1919) undertook to study the respiratory function of the blood of fishes in view of the knowledge of the influence of temperature upon the dissociation …

The Spirit Of The Common Law, Roscoe Pound Aug 1921

The Spirit Of The Common Law, Roscoe Pound

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

These lectures speak in large part from the second decade of the present [20th] century; and they show the faith in the efficacy of effort and belief that the administration of justice may be improved by conscious intelligent action which characterized that time. The recrudescence of juristic pessimism in the past three years has not led me to abandon that point of view. At the end of the nineteenth century lawyers thought attempt at conscious improvement was futile. Now many of them think it is dangerous. In the same way the complacent nothing-needs-to-be-done attitude of Blackstone, who in the spirit …

Vegetation Mapping, Paul B. Sears Apr 1921

Vegetation Mapping, Paul B. Sears

Papers in Ecology

The value of accurate maps of native vegetation as a basis for very practical generalizations can not be questioned. It is obvious that an essential condition for getting accurate maps of large areas is the existence of precise maps of smaller component ones. At present very few precise local maps are available, but it is to be hoped that botanists throughout the country will begin to supplement the efforts of a few of their number who are doing map work of permanent and general' value.

A New Blood Fluke From Turtles, Henry Baldwin Ward Mar 1921

A New Blood Fluke From Turtles, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

For several years an interesting trematode has been under observation in the laboratory here. It occurs in various species of turtles, and was first discovered in some material shipped in from the south for class work. Peculiar importance attaches to the fact that it is a species inhabiting the circulatory system, and in fact it shows a relationship to the blood-inhabiting flukes of man which has become more clearly evident as the observations have accumulated. Since the material is easily obtained, it will afford perhaps the best opportunity available in this country for the laboratory study of forms adapted to …

Poetic Origins And The Ballad, Louise Pound Jan 1921

Poetic Origins And The Ballad, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The leading theses of the present volume are that the following assumptions which have long dominated our thought upon the subject of poetic origins and the ballads should be given up, or at least should be seriously qualified; namely, belief in the "communal" authorship and ownership of primitive poetry; disbelief in the primitive artist; reference to the ballad as the earliest and most universal poetic form; belief in the origin of narrative songs in the dance, especially definition of the English and Scottish traditional ballad type as of dance origin; belief in the emergence of traditional ballads from the illiterate, …

Heritable Characters Of Maize: Ix. Crinkly Leaf, R. A. Emerson Jan 1921

Heritable Characters Of Maize: Ix. Crinkly Leaf, R. A. Emerson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In 1910 a strain of dent corn obtained at the National Corn Exposition held at Omaha was crossed with a strain of flint corn obtained from the Department of Agronomy of the University of Nebraska. The F1 plants of this cross were normal and no abnormalities had been observed in the parent strains. But since the latter had not been subjected to self-pollination, there is no assurance that one or other of them did not have in it the character to be described here. In the F2 generation of this cross there occurred a tpe of plant that …

The Value Of Commercial Vaccines And Bacterins Against Fowl Cholera, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin Jun 1920

The Value Of Commercial Vaccines And Bacterins Against Fowl Cholera, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A great prevalence of the disease known as fowl cholera has naturally stimulated an interest in possible means of prevention and especially in those which may bring about a more or less lasting immunity. Vaccines which were favorably reported by some failed utterly in the hands of others, so that on the whole no substantial advantage has been gained. Vaccines and bacterins are nevertheless constantly urged on poultry owners confronted with disease and the Experiment Station is frequently called upon to give an opinion on their value or to recommend any special preparation. In order to comply with those demands …

The Co-Operative Movement In Nebraska, Maurice H. Weseen

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

"Cut out the middleman." Thus runs the slogan adopted by a conference of representatives of farm and labor organizations held in Chicago a few weeks ago. Perhaps no one of the many suggestions for reducing the high cost of living is more popular or more prevalent at the present moment than this one which recommends the elimination of the middleman. The American Farm Bureau Federation, a national organization with executive committee members from Massachusetts to California, charges that the high prices paid by the consumer are altogether disproportionate to the prices received by the producer and that the middleman is …

Bergson's Theory Of The Comic In The Light Of English Comedy, Louise Mathewson Jan 1920

Bergson's Theory Of The Comic In The Light Of English Comedy, Louise Mathewson

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

From Plato onward many of the world's greatest thinkers have attempted to tell the meaning of laughter. It is not surprising that the thing has proved alluring, for whereas a true theory of laughter might add little to our enjoyment of the comic; it would, nevertheless, help us to understand the nature of life and mind. But although laughter is perhaps the lightest of human possessions, it is the most difficult to capture for examination. Neither philosopher nor literary critic has given us a wholly satisfactory account of the comic. One difficulty is that so many things are true of …

Heritable Characters Of Maize Ii.-Pistillate Flowered Maize Plants, R. A. Emerson Jan 1920

Heritable Characters Of Maize Ii.-Pistillate Flowered Maize Plants, R. A. Emerson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In the "freak"

class at the Annual

Corn Show held at Lincoln, Nebraska,

in the winter of 1913-14,

there was exhibited a corn tassel

with a heavy setting of seeds. A few

seeds are not infrequently found in the

staminate inflorescence of maize, particularly

in pod com, and tillers of various

corn varieties often end in ears instead

of in tassels or have tassels, the central

spikes of which are ear like. The freak

exhibited at the com show, however,

was a large. much branched affair.

wholly tassel-like in form except for the

fact that it bore a heavy crop …

Notes On North American Myxosporidia, Henry Baldwin Ward Dec 1919

Notes On North American Myxosporidia, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

In this paper are published data on three new species of Myxosporidia. Two species were observed in Lake Erie as parasites of a minnow; the third came from a species of Pacific salmon. Both cases present some unusual features that seem worthy of record.

Included are descriptions of Myxobolus aureatus nov. spec., Henneguya brachyura nov. sp., and Henneguya salminicola nov. spec.

I am greatly indebted to my colleague, Dr. Rokusaburo Kudo, for valuable assistance given while I was working up the material. The beautiful sketch illustrating the species from Lake Erie was prepared by Mrs. H. S. Jennings, to whom …

On The Specific Identity Of Heronimus Chelydrae Maccallum And Aorchis Extensus Barker And Parsons, Horace Wesley Stunkard

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The monostomes are among the least known of North American trematode groups. Records give descriptions of only six species, each the single representative of a genus, and according to the classification of Ward (1918) belonging to four different families. Existing descriptions in most cases are far from complete and data necessary for taxonomic determination are lacking. This deficiency has been pointed out by other workers, both in this country and in Europe, and the classification of the monostomes is not well established. In fact, certain investigators regard them as aberrant forms, sprung from different distome groups, which alike have lost …

December 28, 1880, Jersey City, New Jersey, USA - October 6, 1918, Washington, DC, USA. Cause of death: Pneumonia, as a complication of influenza.

Winthrop Davenport Foster's work in parasitology was done principally on the parasites of swine and along the lines of critical tests of the efficacy of anthelmintics, though he published a number of notes on other lines.

On A Species Of Hedruris Occurring Commonly In The Western Newt, Notophthalmus Torosus, Asa C. Chandler Mar 1919

On A Species Of Hedruris Occurring Commonly In The Western Newt, Notophthalmus Torosus, Asa C. Chandler

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

It has recently been pointed out by Ward and Magath (1916) that the nematode fauna of North American freshwater fishes is almost unknown. From a survey of the literature this state of affairs appears to be almost if not quite as true of the nematodes of other cold-blooded vertebrates in North America.

While making stomach examinations of the Western Newt or water-dog, Notophthalmus torosus, the writer found a large percent of specimens captured in the vicinity of Corvallis, Oregon, infested by a nematode which was evidently a species of Hedruris. The structure and ecology of this worm are …

Xvii. The Ballad And The Dance, Louise Pound Jan 1919

Xvii. The Ballad And The Dance, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It is the purpose of the following paper to examine the relationship of the mediceval ballad to the dance, in origin and in traditional usage. Particular reference is had to the English and Scottish ballad tvpe. In various preceding papers I have considered the theory currently accepted in America of the inseparableness of primitive dance, music, and song and have shown that primitive song is not narrative in character. I have also questioned the assumption that the ballad is the archetypal poetic form--this position should be assigned to the song, not the ballad--and the assumption of " communal " as …
