Arhythmorhynchus Capellae Sp. N. (Polymorphidae: Acanthocephala), A Parasite Of The Common Snipe Capella Gallinago Delicata, Gerald D. Schmidt
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Arhythmorhynchus capellae sp. n. is described. The description is based on seven males and seven females from the Common Snipe in northern Colorado. The species is contrasted with two similar species, A. comptus Van Cleave and Rausch, 1950 and A. eroliae (Yamaguti, 1939) Van Cleave and Rausch, 1950. It differs from the former in having 14 proboscis hooks per row rather than eight or nine, and from the latter in having no bursal rays and 16 rows of 14 hooks rather than 18 rows of 12 to 13 hooks.

One-Step Chromatographic Cleanup Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Pesticide Residues In Butterfat. Ii. Chromatography On Florisil, William A. Moats
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The procedure for chromatography on Florisil was modified by using methylene chloride-petroleum ether mixtures to improve separation of insecticides from fat. Combined with paper chromatography, it provides a screening procedure for insecticide residues in dairy products that is comparable in speed and simplicity to total chloride methods but is of superior sensitivity.
Effects Of Food, Temperature, And Oviposition Site On Longevity And Fecundity Of The Army Cutworm, K. P. Pruess
Effects Of Food, Temperature, And Oviposition Site On Longevity And Fecundity Of The Army Cutworm, K. P. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Longevity of the army cutworm, Chorizagrotis auxiliaris (Grote), following mating was inversely related to temperature. Females lived longer than males at all temperatures, and food increased longevity of both sexes. Oviposition occurred at 70° and 55° but not at 32° F. None of the variables tested affected total fecundity but oviposition was completed sooner at 70° than at 55°, in sand as an oviposition site vs. paper toweling and by unfed than by fed moths. Starvation preceding oviposition did not affect fecundity but speeded completion of oviposition when moths were returned to favorable conditions.
The Economics Of Classifying Farmland Between Alternative Uses, Roger H. Willsie
The Economics Of Classifying Farmland Between Alternative Uses, Roger H. Willsie
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
At present some farm programs are aimed at reducing the acreage of land used for crop production. These programs have the objectives of reducing quantities of certain farm commodities and conserving land resources. By shifting land from the production of certain farm commodities to other commodities or to grass, total farm income may be raised and the costs of farm price support and storage programs reduced. In programs to shift land use a classification of land based on economic criteria would be useful. The primary concern of this study was with methods for identifying the economic margin between land uses; …
Effect Of Genotype And Growth Stage On Distribution Of Melilotic Acid, O-Coumaric Acid, And Coumarinic Acid In Melilotus Alba Desr., Walter R. Akeson, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Effect Of Genotype And Growth Stage On Distribution Of Melilotic Acid, O-Coumaric Acid, And Coumarinic Acid In Melilotus Alba Desr., Walter R. Akeson, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Percentages of melilotic acid, o-coumaric acid, and coumarinic acid were highest in leaves, intermediate in stems. and lowest in roots of greenhouse-grown sweetclovcr plants of the CuCuBB genotype. In leaves, percentages of each of the three compounds decreased as the leaves grew older. but amounts per leaflet increased with age except for content of o-coumaric acid, in which a brief increase was followed by a sharp decrease. Seed from plants of the Cu phenotype was higher in content of each of the three compounds than seed from cu plants. Levels of o-coumaric and coumarinic acids were much …
Glucosides Of Coumarinic And O-Coumaric Acids In The Tonka Bean, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz
Glucosides Of Coumarinic And O-Coumaric Acids In The Tonka Bean, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The β-glucosides of coumarinic and o-coumaric acids were detected in extracts of cotyledons, exocarps, and seedling leaves of the tonka bean. The existence of these compounds and the presence of a β-glucosidase having specificity for coumarinyl glucoside suggest that, the tonka bean synthesizes coumarin by a pathway similar to the one found in sweetclover.

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, dedicated on May 16, 1963, is more than another beautiful building given to a university by beneficent donors. It is a contribution to a total cultural development which is taking place in America and one especially discernible in the midland of our nation.
One of the outstanding architectural masterpieces of the Midwest, the Sheldon Gallery is a part of the University of Nebraska's newer emphasis on cultural opportunities for its students and staff and an influence on the cultural appreciation of our region. It gives strong evidence that artistic contributions come from an irrepressible spirit …

Unilateral Refusals To Deal As A Method Of Deterring Private Antitrust Litigants: A Legitimate Method Of Economic Coercion?, Robert Grimit
Nebraska Law Review
The role which the private litigant plays in the enforcement of the antitrust laws, either by an action to recover treble damages or to enjoin antitrust violations, is of increasing importance. As these actions become more frequent, additional problems are raised. One such problem is the use of a unilateral refusal to deal as a deterrent to the effective use of the treble damage suit by the private litigant. Two recent parallel cases have dealt with the question of allowing temporary injunctive relief where the defendant has refused to deal with a plaintiff asking for treble damages. In House of …
Proof In (Civil Law) Criminal Procedure, W. P. J. Pompe
Proof In (Civil Law) Criminal Procedure, W. P. J. Pompe
Nebraska Law Review
In the application of law, and more particularly in the application of the criminal law, "to prove" means "to produce evidence of facts which occurred in the past." The application of law implies also the proof of all sorts of abstract theories, but by "proof" in the application of law one must only include proof of concrete facts. The particular character of proof in criminal cases lies in the fact that such proof is of a legal nature. Starting from the principle that absolute certainty cannot be achieved, one cannot avoid the question of what is the degree of certainty …
Problems Of Measuring And Achieving Equality Of Representation In State Legislatures, Alan L. Clem
Problems Of Measuring And Achieving Equality Of Representation In State Legislatures, Alan L. Clem
Nebraska Law Review
Americans live by a number of basic principles of government which are perceived to help guarantee the freedom of the individual within the context of the security of the community. Certain of these principles are commonly verbalized: "equality before the law"; the "first amendment freedoms" guaranteeing freedom of speech, press, worship, assembly, and petition; and "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" upholding the citizen's right and duty to take part in the government of his society. This article is concerned with one of the most basic of these principles of democratic self-government, the principle that …

Effects Of Management, Strain And Truck Shipment On Albumen Quality Of Eggs, J.L. Adams, J.L. Skinner
Effects Of Management, Strain And Truck Shipment On Albumen Quality Of Eggs, J.L. Adams, J.L. Skinner
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Very little has been reported on changes in quality of eggs during shipment. Gwin (1952) reported a study involving more than a billion eggs purchased by the Armed Forces of the United States. U.S. Grades were determined by candling and inspection by trained inspectors from the Army Veterinary Corps and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Quality loss was shown to be related to time in transit, distance or miles in transit and seasonal influences. No data were reported as to the relation of varying physical conditions during transit or position effects within the rail cars. Adams and Milam (1960) studied …

Valuation Of Mutual Fund Shares For Federal Estate And Gift Tax Purposes, Ron Sutter
Valuation Of Mutual Fund Shares For Federal Estate And Gift Tax Purposes, Ron Sutter
Nebraska Law Review
Mutual funds (open-end diversified investment companies) have recently become one of this country's fastest growing businesses. Although there is not an established market for mutual fund shares comparable to the stock exchanges for regular securities, there is enough of a "market" to establish buying and selling procedures. Another important characteristic of a mutual fund's buying and selling procedure is that there are virtually no transactions between private individuals. The brokers and dealers of mutual fund shares are normally obligated by contract with the fund to refrain from privately transferring shares offered by a seller to a buyer. Because of these …

Studies On Neogogatea Kentuckiensis (Cable, 1935) N. Comb. (Trematoda: Strigeoidea: Cyathocotylidae), Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The cercaria of N. kentuckiensis was found in Anaplocamus dilatatus (Nitrocris d.) and Mudalia carinata. The metacercaria was found in all fishes examined from Opequon River, West Virginia, except Cottus bairdi which was also refractory to experimental infection. Two species of Centrarchidae, four of Cyprinidae, three of Salmonidae, Etheostoma flabellare, Platypoecilus maculatus, and Trichogaster trichopterus were experimentally infected. The development of the metacercari and cyst and effect on the fish are described. The histopathology initially consists of hemorrhage and muscle necrosis about the metacercaria, followed by reorganization and formation of a loose connective tissue cyst. The controversial adult names …

The Wonderful Prairie Sod, J. E. Weaver
The Wonderful Prairie Sod, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
A magnificent expanse of grassland occupied the central part of North America before the coming of the white man. This paper is the result of a continuous investigation which began in 1916 of a large portion of this prairie. The area of most intensive study included approximately the western third of Iowa and the eastern third of Nebraska. The advent of the great drought of 1933 to 1940 offered an exceptional opportunity to ascertain the responses of native plants to extremely adverse conditions. The role played by rhizomes of grasses in endurance of drought and frequently their recovery from it …

Helminths of the shrew-mole from Oregon are described. They include a cestode Hymenolepis neurotrichi sp. n., a trematode Microphallus aspalacis sp. n., and the third-stage larva of an undetermined species of Porrocaecum (nematode), probably P. depressum (Zeder, 1800), or P. angusticolle (Molin, 1860). Preserved viscera of ten animals were examined. Three were infected.
Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell
Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
It is now recognized that water pollution is an important problem, that it becomes more widespread and serious as population and industry expand, and that something must be done if aquatic life resource are to be saved and their productivity maintained. In the past there has been a great deal of uncertainty in approaching this situation and a general lack of understanding of the details and ramification of the overall problem. In the efforts for the abatement of pollution, only a few clearcut objectives have been established. Knowledge is lacking as to what the objectives should be. There is still …
