Lipid Content And Seasonal Activity Of Odontopus Calceatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Adults, E. A. Heinrichs Dec 1969

Lipid Content And Seasonal Activity Of Odontopus Calceatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Adults, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Overwintering Odontopus calceatus (Say) adults were first observed feeding on April 10. Weekly collections during the activity period indicated that new-generation adults began emerging June 4. By July 23 they had entered the forest litter for hibernation. Lipid content decreased throughout the hibernation period as the weevils utilized 77% of their total lipid content during this time. The most rapid decrease during hibernation occurred from February to March, just prior to mating and oviposition in the spring. No increase in lipid content occurred during the activity period in spring and summer. A great increase in lipid content did occur within …

Parasitic Organisms In The Blood Of Arvicoline Rodents In Alaska, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch Dec 1969

Parasitic Organisms In The Blood Of Arvicoline Rodents In Alaska, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A Grahamella-like organism (Schizomycetes: Bartonellaceae) was found in erythrocytes of laboratory-reared northern voles, Microtus oeconomus Pallas, which had been inoculated intraperitoneally with a saline suspension of ground fleas, Megabothris abantis (Roths.), from wild northern voles captured at Lower Ugashik Lake, Alaska Peninsula. A live-trapped northern vole from the same locality harbored trypanosomes referable to T. microti (Mastigasida: Trypanosomatidae). Two morphologically similar but biologically different strains of piroplasms (Piroplasmasida: Theileriidae) of uncertain generic status were isolated from northern voles of Ugashik Lake origin and from northern red-backed voles, Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, from the vicinity of Anchorage, Alaska. In the natural …

Sweetclover Weevil Feeding Stimulants: Isolation And Identification Of Glucose, Fructose, And Sucrose, W. R. Akeson, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Dec 1969

Sweetclover Weevil Feeding Stimulants: Isolation And Identification Of Glucose, Fructose, And Sucrose, W. R. Akeson, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The water-soluble fraction of Melilotus leaves previously referred to as Stimulant A was further fractionated by preparative paper chromatography into three factors, each having a stimulatory effect on sweetclover weevil feeding. The three factors, designated Stimulant A1, A2, and A3, were identified as sucrose, glucose, and fructose, respectively, by co-chromatography with known sugars on cellulose-coated thin-layer plates. Silver nitrate, anisidine phthalate, and anthrone were employed as detection agents. The isolated compounds and corresponding reagent grade sugars were identical in chromatographic and chemical behavior, as well as in feeding stimulant activity. Sucrose stimulated the greatest …

Sire Effects In Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck Oct 1969

Sire Effects In Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Over 1,000 Holstein herds in New York's Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative were classified as to housing system. The two housing systems considered were stanchions and free stalls. First-lactation records (21,285) produced in these herds by daughters sired through artificial insemination were analyzed to determine if housing system would affect sire ranking. The study covered records started in 1964 through 1967.

The sire component of variance was estimated for each housing system for deviations of these records from their adjusted herdmate averages. The covariance between the means of daughters in each housing system was computed. The genetic correlation between sire effects …

Influence Of Developmental Stage Of Melilotus Infesta Leaves On Resistance To Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, G. L. Beland, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz Oct 1969

Influence Of Developmental Stage Of Melilotus Infesta Leaves On Resistance To Feeding By The Sweetclover Weevil, W. R. Akeson, G. L. Beland, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Leaves of 6- to 8•week old Melilotus infesta plants contained progressively higher levels of nitrate as the leaves developed from the tightly pinched to the fully expanded stage. In weevil feeding tests on water extracts of these leaves a close relationship was found between actual feeding and the feeding predicted on the basis of nitrate content. At a given level of nitrate, extracts of young M. infesta leaves were less attractive to the weevil than were extracts of young M. officinalis leaves. Leaves of mature M. infesta plants contained very little nitrate, but water extracts of such leaves remained unattractive …

Genetic Studies Of Induced Mutants In Melilotus Alba. I. Short-Internode Dwarf, Curled Leaf, Multifoliolate Leaf, And Cotyledonary Branching, B. G. Gengenbach, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz Oct 1969

Genetic Studies Of Induced Mutants In Melilotus Alba. I. Short-Internode Dwarf, Curled Leaf, Multifoliolate Leaf, And Cotyledonary Branching, B. G. Gengenbach, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Information obtained from the F1, F2, and F3 generations of crosses between the normal annual M. alba progenitor line and the four mutants, short-internode dwarf, curled leaf, multifoliolate leaf, and cotyledonary branching, indicates that each character is conditioned by a single pair of alleles. The multifoliolate leaf character is dominant over the normal phenotype; the other three mutant characters are recessive. The symbols dw, cl, Mf, and cb are proposed as designations for the respective mutant genes.

Nationwide Residues Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wings Of Mallards And Black Ducks, Robert G. Heath

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Nationwide monitoring of organochlorine pesticides in wings of more than 24,000 mallards and black ducks bagged during the 1965 and 1966 hunting seasons showed DDE to be the predominant residue, followed in order by DDT, DDD, dieldrin, and heptachlor epoxide. Residues were generally highest in wings from the Atlantic and Pacific Flyways, and lowest in the Central Flyway. DDE was reported for every State and was notably high in wings from New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, California, and Utah. Dieldrin residues were prevalent in wings from Arkansas, Texas, Utah, California, and several States in the …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The inferior ovary of Boottia cordata, Ottelia alismoides, and their hybrid is appendicular in nature, the carpels are congenitally only slightly connate, and they are unsealed. All floral organs except the sepals originate from common primordia in the female and bisexual flowers. A flat residual floral apex is present. There is a vestigial superior ovary of three ontogeneticallv fused carpels in the male flower of Boottia cordata. The hybrid is intermediate in many characteristics and has partially fertile stamens and staminodia. The sequence of development in all flowers is acropetal. These plants appear to be related to …

Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster Sep 1969

Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Ten bacteriophages for Xanthomonas phaseoli were characterized. On the basis of adsorption rates, latent period and burst size, plaque morphology, host range, efficiency of plating, ultrastructure, sensitivity to osmotic shock, streptomycin sensitivity, temperature effects on plating efficiency, and serology, the phages were separated into at least three groups. Some of the phages were infectious for Pseudomonas phaseolicola (four strains) and P. syringae (one strain) in a narrow temperature range. The taxonomic and ecological significance of this finding is discussed.

Variation Within Herds Under Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck Aug 1969

Variation Within Herds Under Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

New York Holstein herds (1,152) including 75,875 cows were classified by housing system (stanchions, free stalls, and other combinations). Records initiated in these herds from 1964 to 1968 were used to determine the degree to which housing type might affect variance of milk production records in herds with 45 or more cows.

The within-herd variances by lactation for each housing system in each year-season were examined by Bartlett's test for nonhomogeneity among housing systems. Records in the stanchion systems were less variable than those in free-stall systems. This difference was not large enough to require adjustment for type of housing …

An Explanation For The Blue Sequence Of Variable Stars, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon Aug 1969

An Explanation For The Blue Sequence Of Variable Stars, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon

Norman R. Simon Papers

Nuclear energy of the stellar core is found to be the direct source of energy fed into radial pulsations in two classes of blue variable stars. The μ-mechanism (reversal of the gradient of mean molecular weight, which reduces the central condensation) or the β-mechanism (high radiation pressure) can explain the basic variability of β Cephei stars if they are burning hydrogen in their cores, have accreted a helium-rich envelope, and are the luminous secondaries of close binary systems. If the composition reversal does not lead to significant mixing in the envelope, the μ-mechanism will operate in inhomogeneous stars …

Animal Performance On Crested Wheatgrass Pastures During May And June, Fort Rock, Oregon, D. W. Hedrick, W. M. Moser, A. L. Steninger, R. A. Long

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Average animal performance data of 1.5 lb/animal daily gain, two calendar months of grazing, and 20 lb/acre gain were obtained from 5 years of using crested wheatgrass under a 2-crop (May) and 1-crop (June) system of grazing. Regrowth was obtained on early use (2-crop) pastures in only 2-out of the 5 years. Extension of results to users was hastened by involving ranchers, a county agent, and a federal agency manager in the study.

Contamination In Denta Sweetclover During Successive Generations Of Seed Increase, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Jun 1969

Contamination In Denta Sweetclover During Successive Generations Of Seed Increase, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Contamination levels observed in the breeder, foundation, and certified seed generations of 'Denta' sweetdover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were 0.71, 1.69, and 3.62%, respectively, as measured by the frequency of plants high in content of o-hydroxycinnamic acid. Based on a sample of plants tested simultaneously for o-hydroxycinnamic acid content and ,β-glucosidase activity, a small but consistent decrease in the frequency of cu plants occurred with succeeding seed generations, while shifts in the frequency of b plants were not consistent in magnitude or direction. Contamination through cross-pollination with CuCuBB plants may be the major factor responsible for the observed decreases in …

Changes In Body Weight And Composition Of Adult Nongravid Female Rats Deprived Of Dietary Protein, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., C. F. Eisenhard, J. R. O'Connor Mar 1969

Changes In Body Weight And Composition Of Adult Nongravid Female Rats Deprived Of Dietary Protein, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., C. F. Eisenhard, J. R. O'Connor

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Seventy-six young adult nongravid female rats of the Carworth strain were used in two experiments to study the effect of dietary protein deprivation on body weight, feed consumption, body composition and serum protein concentration. Semipurified diets containing glucose, corn oil, vitamins and minerals with or without casein (protein-free = PF, 14% casein = C) were fed ad libitum in both experiments to rats caged in individual wire-bottom cages. Feeding the PF diet for up to 26 days resulted in a continuous weight loss over the entire period. The average loss in body weight as a percentage of initial weight of …
