Methiocarb, A Chemical Bird Repellent: A Review Of Its Effectiveness On Crops, Joseph L. Guarino
Methiocarb, A Chemical Bird Repellent: A Review Of Its Effectiveness On Crops, Joseph L. Guarino
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)
Since 1964, when the effectiveness of methiocarb for preventing pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from damaging sprouting corn was proven in South Dakota, an aggressive program has been carried out by personnel of the Denver Wildlife Research Center and many cooperators to develop methiocarb as a broad spectrum avian repellent. The successful use of methiocarb for preventing damage caused by several species of birds to sprouting corn in several states and to sprouting soybeans in South America is reviewed. Recent results obtained from spraying methiocarb on ripening rice in California, ripening sorghum in Colorado and Oklahoma, cherries in Michigan, and grapes in …

The Influence Of Attractants And Repellents On The Feeding Behaviour Of Rattus Norvegicus, J. O. Bull
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)
Poison baits are extensively used for commensal rodent control; considerable folk lore exists regarding the use of additives to induce rodents to come to and eat poison baits. This paper describes a rational evaluation of attractants and the influence of different odours in inducing Rattus norvegicus to feed at given locations. The influence of certain repellents was also examined. Tests consisted of attempts to induce rats to feed at non-preferred sites or to repel them from preferred sites. Place preference was the dominant factor in feeding by rats, and odours failed to influence feeding activity significantly.
Rat Reduction With Indigenous Methods, P. J. Deoras
Rat Reduction With Indigenous Methods, P. J. Deoras
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)
Mujumdar (1968) has recorded that there are 566,000 villages in India as compared to 2699 towns, and that there is 322,460,000 acres of cultivable land and probably 500 million domestic rats in India. The food production target in 1968 in India was to be 110 million tons. National rodent committee 1967 mentioned of a loss of one million ton of food grains by rats alone. Deoras (1968) has mentioned that 3 common rats in Bombay were consuming 26 gm. of food grains per day, that is, about one ounce, while the quantum of cereal rations available per man in some …

Testing A Planning And Control Model In Nonprofit Organizations, Charles A. Reimnitz
Testing A Planning And Control Model In Nonprofit Organizations, Charles A. Reimnitz
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This study utilizes a planning and control model abstracted from the conceptual framework of general management knowledge to test the relative efficiency of administrators in three educational service organizations. The hypothesis that subordinates' perceptions of administrators' relative proficiency will be a function of the administrators' education, training, experience, and conscious use of management techniques appears to be substantiated.
Form And Level Of Coumarin In Deer's Tongue, Trilisa Odoratissima, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, R. C. Leffel
Form And Level Of Coumarin In Deer's Tongue, Trilisa Odoratissima, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, R. C. Leffel
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Fresh leaves of deer's tongue contain large quantities (more than 10% of the dry weight, in some cases) of o-hydroxycinnamic acid (o-HCA). Both cis- and trans-o-HCA are present, and both isomers exist in the fresh tissue predominantly as glucosides. Cured deer's tongue leaves contain relatively high levels of coumarin and lower amounts of o-HCA glucosides. It is probable that during the curing process cis-o-HCA glucoside is hydrolyzed by an endogenous g-glucosidase, and that the liberated cis-o-HCA lactonizes spontaneously to form coumarin.

In this history of the Nebraska Art Association emphasis has been placed on the development of policies which governed the formation of the collections, the close relationship between the Association and the University, and especially the family interests which have made possible many generous gifts.
It all began with Sarah Wool Moore, as dedicated a disciple of the visual arts as ever wielded a crayon or a camel's hair brush. Miss Moore had come to Nebraska University in 1884 as a teacher of drawing and painting. She had been a pupil of August Eisenmenger, rector of the Vienna Academy of …

In research it is often desirable to measure body composition at different stages of growth. Ideally, if the same animal could be sampled several times during the growing-finishing period, critical information about tissue growth could be obtained. Thus, the development of a simple procedure to obtain tissue samples would be an asset to the researcher.

The Structure Of An Ornithine-Containing Lipid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, Herman W. Knoche, Jessup M. Shively
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The structure of an ornithine-containing lipid from Thio-bacillus thiooxidans
has been elucidated. Methanolysis of
the lipid released methyl cis-ll,lZ-methylene-Z-hydroxyoctadecanoate.
Acid hydrolysis of the residue yielded ornithine
and a mixture of fatty acids, the major components of
which were 3-hydroxyhexadecanoic and 2-hexadecenoic
acids. Identification of the 3-hydroxy fatty acid was based
on the thin layer chromatographic mobilities of the acid, its
methyl ester, the methyl ether, and acetate derivatives of its
methyl ester, on the equivalent chain lengths of the derivatives
of the acid and the acid obtained by oxidation of the
natural acid with permanganate, and on mass spectral studies. …

Follicular Development In Heifers Infused With Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, D. B. Laster
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Follicle-stimulating hormone from different species has been used to increase ovulation and calving rates in cattle, injections proving to be most successful when given during the late follicular phase of the oestrous cycle or in combination with progestagens (Willett & Buckner, 1953; Bellows, Anderson & Short 1969). Some investigations have resulted in substantial increases in ovulation and calving rates, but there is usually a high degree of variation in ovarian response. Patterns of follicular growth and atresia have been studied in cattle (Rajakoski, 1960) and hypotheses have been suggested to explain how exogenous FSH stimulates follicle growth in relation to …

Seriation Of Certain Arikara Villages, J.J. Hoffman
Seriation Of Certain Arikara Villages, J.J. Hoffman
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Selected villages of 18th century Arikara Indians are seriated on the basis of presumably sensitive pottery traits. Two agreeing temporal models, one statistical and one graphical, are derived from the manipulated data. The statistical model is further abstracted to present a relative temporal placement of the individual villages. The models and their interpretations differ somewhat from previous work on the subject. Certain ideas regarding modification of the techniques employed are discussed. A few thoughts are also injected regarding the use of temporal models, seriation, and statistics in general for the interpretation of past behavior.

Physiological Cost Of Industrial Work, Gregory L. Dickey, Morris H. Schneider, Stephen H. Wimmer
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of various mechanical work loads on ventilation rate and heart rate, under duplicate work conditions. The task was to crank a six inch radius crank at 60 RPM against torques of O, 16, 32.1, 48 and 64.2 inch pounds equivalent to work loads of 0, 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 ft. lb/min, respectively.
Introduction
During the past few years more research efforts have been expanded in an attempt to measure the amount of energy consumed (physiological cost) by an individual performing physical work. The energy that a person consumes can be divided …

Field Tests Of Insecticides Against Plagiotrochus Cornigerus, E. E. Burgess, H. E. Williams, R. E. Wilkinson, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Pin oaks, Quercus palustris Muenchhausen, are one of the important shade trees in west Tennessee. The horned oak-gall wasp, Plagiotrochus cornigerus Osten Sacken, causes a deformation of the twigs and leaves of the tree. In 1965, K. E. Stewart, an entomologist at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, injected pin oaks with systemic insecticides to evaluate their effectiveness in controlling the leaf gall and the stem gall caused by the horned oak-gall wasp. He found oxydemeton-methyl ec at a rate of 25 g AI/in. diameter and technical demeton at a rate of 3 g AI/in. diameter were the best materials …

The opportunity to spend two years in Mysore (March 1970 to April 1972) working with various individuals involved in plant protection has been personally a rewarding and satisfying experience.
In general terms, the purpose of the Plant Protection Advisor was to identify the problems relating to plant protection which limit the spread and production of high yielding varieties and to assist in solving these problems .. The following Operational Work Plan, which was written by my predecessor, was followed and added to in order to achieve the overall objectives: 1. To promote widespread adoption of recommended plant protection practices. 2. …

The Face Of Malone An Area Of Transition In Lincoln, Nebraska, David A. Montgomery, Frank A. Pratt, Rodney W. Schullig, Boniface N. Madubom, Darshan S. Kang
Geography Program: Faculty Publications
This report concerns Malone, a problem area of Lincoln, Nebraska, that is undergoing considerable change as a result of external influences from the city and the university. In 1971, a graduate Seminar in Urban Geography devoted a semester to the spatial aspects of blight In cities and as a part of this course prepared short reports on specific aspects of Lincoln's example of a blighted zone. The point of departure for the field work was the conceptual framework of the transition zone as it was developed by Burgess in the 1920's and refined by others at a later time, especially …

Parasites Of Nebraska Pheasants, Ellis C. Greiner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Parasite prevalence, intensity, and diversity in Nebraska pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) were studied during the fall of 1971. Fifty-four of 63 (86%) pheasants examined for helminths harbored at least one parasite species. Heterakis gallinarum (65% of the pheasants), Choanotaenia infundibulum (48% ). Echinoparyphiuin recurcatum (1 .6% ), and Zygocotyle lunata (1 .6% ) were recovered. Two of 15 (13% birds examined for coccidia possessed Eimeria phasiani. None of 35 pheasants examined for hematozoa had patent infections.

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Follicle-stimulating hormone (NIH-FSH-S8) was labelled with 125I to determine its disappearance rate after a single intravenous injection and to determine the level of circulating [125I]fsh in the blood after a single intramuscular or subcutaneous injection in the rat, rabbit, ewe and cow. There was a difference in the disappearance and uptake rates among the four species, but the shape of the curve for rate of loss and uptake of labelled fsh was similar in all species. The disappearance of radioactivity occurred at two rates; the first from 1 to 8 min and the second from …
Review Of Check List Of The Helminth Parasites Of African Freshwater Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman
Review Of Check List Of The Helminth Parasites Of African Freshwater Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
In spite of the fact that freshwater covers about 74,000 square miles of Africa, surprisingly little work has been done on the helminth parasites of African fishes. This well written and documented book consists of excellent parasite/host and host/ parasite check lists followed by indices of parasites and countries. As the author stated, "It is hoped that this list, combined with the increasing recognition of the importance of fish as a source of protein and, therefore, of the significance of potential pathogens, will provide the necessary stimulus to research workers to rectify these gaps."

Identification Of Experiences In Applied Biological Science And Agribusiness Of Seventh Grade Students, Roy D. Dillon, University Of Nebraska W. Walker
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
In a study to identify the applied biological science-oriented experiences of seventh grade students and to describe student aspirations for future study of applied biological and agribusiness subjects, a random sample of 1,286 7th-grade students was selected in Nebraska. The sample represented l0.l% of the 7th-grade students in Nebraska in 1970, and was selected by drawing a 5% random sample of schools within each of 8 mutually-exclusive class groupings as defined by the Nebraska State Department of Education.
It is clearly evident from the results described that 7th-grade students in Nebraska have gained considerable exploratory experiences through formal and informal …
Metabolic Pathways Of Malate Enantiomers, Charles P. Anderson, Stanley Dagley, David Hopper
Metabolic Pathways Of Malate Enantiomers, Charles P. Anderson, Stanley Dagley, David Hopper
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A strain of Pseudomonas non-fluorescens has shown to metabolize certain phenolic compounds through a pathway containing D-malic acid. This same bacterium is able to oxidize D-malate slowly when it is used as the sole carbon source, but is unable to grow on it. Possible pathways and explanations of this phenomena are postulated.
In recent years the metabolism of malate enantiomers in various species of Pseudomonas has been the subject of considerable investigation. This results from the fact that the microbial metabolism of the dihydroxphenol, gentisic acid, has been shown to include D-malate in the metabolic chain (Hopper, Chapman, and Dagley, …

Time, Space, And Climate In The Middle Missouri, John E. Ehrenhard
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
It has been postulated that some cultural movements or conditions may be correlated with climatic episodes. One area where such correlations can be attempted lies in the Dakotas along the Missouri River mainstem where there is an apparent correspondence between dates of certain widespread climatic events and sequential episodes of native cultural history. During the period ranging from A.D. 700-1200 and from A.D. 1300 on into the nineteenth century significant changes of a climatic nature may have affected Indian societies.
The correlation of some climatic episodes or conditions with cultural movements is being attempted in an area of the Dakotas …
