Motor Vehicle Drivers' Knowledge Of Safely Traversing Highway-Rail Grade Crossings, Aemal Khattak, M. Umer Farooq, Abdul Farhan
Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs
This study investigates motor vehicle drivers’ socioeconomic, personality, and attitudinal factors associated with their knowledge of safely traversing highway-rail grade crossings (HRGCs). A survey of randomly selected Nebraska households solicited responses from licensed drivers (N= 980, response rate = 39 percent). Of the total thirty-one questions on the questionnaire, nine pertained to respondents’ knowledge of safely navigating HRGCs (e.g., what does a crossbuck sign require a driver to do when approaching a rail crossing?). Correct answers to the questions provided a measure of respondents’ knowledge of safely traversing HRGCs and led to their classification in five ordered categories. A random …

A Heterogeneity-Based Temporal Stability Assessment Of Pedestrian Crash Injury Severity Using An Aggregated Crash And Hospital Data Set, M. Umer Farooq, Aemal Khattak
Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs
This study utilized a unique approach to crash data analysis by examining the temporal stability of pedestrian crash injury severity and its contributory factors. Police-reported crash data and EMS-related injury data from Nebraska were obtained from 2014 to 2018, and random parameter ordered probit models for injury severity were estimated for each year to account for unobserved heterogeneity. Four discrete levels of injury severity were considered for model estimation: fatality, disabling injury/suspected serious injury, visible injury/possible injury, and no injury. Data were filtered based on several important variables of interest, such as pedestrian characteristics, crash characteristics, environmental and weather characteristics, …

Why School Choice Is Necessary For Religious Liberty And Freedom Of Belief, Richard F. Duncan
Why School Choice Is Necessary For Religious Liberty And Freedom Of Belief, Richard F. Duncan
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
The government school monopoly for funding K–12 education creates a coercive system that commandeers a captive audience of impressionable children for inculcation in secular ideas, beliefs, and values concerning matters of truth, moral character, culture, and the good life. The brutal bargain imposed on parents by this monopoly requires them to choose between the single largest benefit most families receive from state and local governments and educating their children in a curriculum that is consistent with the preferred educative speech of the parents. To choose the latter is to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of dollars of tax-funded support for K–12 …

Next Generation Science Standards* Crosscutting Concept 4. Systems and system models. A system is an organized group of related objects or components; models can be used for understanding and predicting the behavior of systems.
Youth will identify components of network graphs and interpret relationships modeled by the network graphs. They will develop curiosity (ask questions) about why there are connections in some places and not in other places; why there are different colors; shapes, and sizes, and how/if the model helps us understand the phenomenon.

Decline Is Not Inevitable: Changes In Science Identity During The Progression Through A U.S. Middle School Among Boys And Girls, Julia Mcquillan, Patricia Wonch Hill, Joseph C. Jochman, Grace Kelly
Worlds of Connections Resources
In the United States, science capital is important for navigating many aspects of life. Yet during middle school, science interest declines more for girls than boys. It is unclear, however, whether science identity also declines during the middle school years and if there are differences by gender. The authors advance prior research by modeling changes in science identity and associations with changes in identity-relevant characteristics using growth curve analyses on four waves of data from 760 middle school youth. For girls and boys, science identity changes over time; about 40 percent of the variance is within-person change, with the remainder …

Objective: Youth will demonstrate how parts of a network are interdependent.
This guide is designed to give activity leaders the core themes for using network models to analyze systems. The basic network ideas and skills in this activity can be used in numerous career paths to study patterns of behavior and reveal hidden connections. Sociologists, computer scientists, biologists, anthropologists, engineers, neuroscientists, and many others can use network science in their …

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Recent studies indicate that drought indicators based on near-surface air relative humidity (RH), air temperature (T), and air vapor pressure deficit (VPD), derived from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite can detect the onset of drought earlier than other drought indicators, specifically standardized precipitation index (SPI), which is widely used for drought onset detection. A recent study showed that standardized relative humidity index (SRHI) can detect drought signals earlier than SPI (Farahmand et al. 2015). Relative humidity is a climate variable defined as the ratio of air vapor pressure to saturated vapor pressure. Precipitation and relative …

Urban Food Security: Examining The Unique Challenges And Opportunities Associated With Ensuring Food Security In Urban Areas, Michael Atuahene Djan
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
Food security is a significant concern in urban areas (UAs). With the rapid increase in urbanization, addressing this issue has become increasingly important. Despite interventions to tackle food security issues, the world has achieved varying degrees of success in eradicating hunger, and food security in cities is critical. This study examined the unique challenges and opportunities associated with ensuring food security in urban areas. The study reviewed empirical literature and relevant reports in the last five years (2018-2023). This study identified several challenges in ensuring food security in urban regions, across the world, including rising food prices, limited water and …
