Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Multi-omics has the promise to provide a detailed molecular picture of biological systems. Although obtaining multi-omics data is relatively easy, methods that analyze such data have been lagging. In this paper, we present an algorithm that uses probabilistic graph representations and external knowledge to perform optimal structure learning and deduce a multifarious interaction network for multi-omics data from a bacterial community. Kefir grain, a microbial community that ferments milk and creates kefir, represents a self-renewing, stable, natural microbial community. Kefir has been shown to have a wide range of health benefits. We obtained a controlled bacterial community using the two …

Investigation And Modification Of Single-Post Aluminum Sign Supports For Mash Crashworthiness, Rodrigo Quintero

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Traffic signs are used to display information to drivers and are one of the most commonly encountered roadside structures. Although they are a vital traffic control device, signs can pose a significant safety risk to errant drivers due to their extensive placement and proximity to the roadway. Therefore, traffic signs and their supports must be designed with crashworthiness in mind to reduce the likelihood of injury in the event of a vehicle impact. Prior to 2009, these systems were evaluated using the crash testing criteria found in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report No. 350 [1]. Currently, they …

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a fundamental Internet protocol responsible for controlling and coordinating the Internet traffic. As a result, TCP significantly influences the overall performance and stability of the Internet. One critical information required by a TCP connection to make decisions is FlightSize, which is the total amount of outstanding data contributed by the connection to the Internet. The FlightSize information is used by a TCP connection to determine its future sending rate and also avoid traffic congestion and collapse in the Internet. Consequently, an inaccurate estimation of FlightSize can result in degraded performance and instability of the Internet. …

Wild Bee Utilization Of Engineered Pollinator Habitat In Eastern Nebraska Agroecosystems, Shianne Lindsay Aug 2023

Wild Bee Utilization Of Engineered Pollinator Habitat In Eastern Nebraska Agroecosystems, Shianne Lindsay

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Habitat loss is a leading cause of biodiversity decline globally. Further, loss of natural and semi-natural habitat is a major factor contributing to declines in wild pollinator populations. Among intensive agroecosystems in the Midwestern United States, corn, soy, and small grain fields dominate the landscape and leave limited space available for forb-rich habitat that supports diverse pollinator assemblages to exist and thrive. There are numerous barriers and challenges to integrating pollinator habitat into such agroecosystems and quantitative assessments of impacts on pollinator communities are largely lacking. The establishment of high-quality pollinator habitat can provide both high flower abundance and species …

It is critical to cultivate a scientifically literate population that can think systematically and make informed decisions based on STEM principles to address such complex agroecosystem problems.

Methods: In this study, semi-structured focus group discussions with high school students were analyzed to determine whether Prairie …

Utilizing Mitotalens To Investigate Large Repeats In The Arabidopsis Thaliana Mitochondrial Genome, Cambelle Johnson Aug 2023

Utilizing Mitotalens To Investigate Large Repeats In The Arabidopsis Thaliana Mitochondrial Genome, Cambelle Johnson

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Mitochondria are a silly place to store the genetic code. In spite of the ever-present threat of oxidative DNA damage, plant mitochondrial genomes are expansive in size and include noncoding repeat sequences, a small number of which are greater than 1kilobase (kb), known hereafter as “large repeats” (LR). This theme of one or more large repeat pairs is shared across most flowering plants, lending to the belief that they somehow contribute to the plant’s fitness. These repeats exhibit high rates of rearrangement and recombination. Studying repeats in vivo could have large scale implications in hybrid crop production enhancement including eliminating …

Soybean Tolerance To Ultra-Low Doses Of Dicamba: Hormesis Or Not, Luka Milosevic, O. Adewale Osipitan, Jon E. Scott, Stevan Z. Knezevic

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The widespread use of dicamba across the soybean growing regions of the United States resulted in increased off-target movement of this herbicide to susceptible vegetations. There are speculations that a drift of sublethal (ultra-low) doses of dicamba can enhance soybean growth and yield through a phenomenon called hormesis. Field studies were conducted during 2018 and 2019 to determine whether soybean growth and yield can be enhanced with ultra-low doses (0.0112–56 g ae ha-1) of dicamba, applied at three growth stages (V2, R1 and R2). There was no evidence that the ultra-low doses of dicamba (0.0112–56 g ae ha …
