Effects Of Lipid Activating Chemical Compounds On The Growth And Production Of Fatty Acids And Metabolites In Green Algae, David Nguyen, Nishikant Wase, Concetta Dirusso

UCARE: Research Products

This study examines the effects of small molecule lipid activating chemical compound, discovered from the high throughput screening (HTS) (2) methods of previous FATTT Lab studies on the growth and production of lipids and metabolites in microalgae. For this study, the effects of two lipid inducing chemical compounds from the HTS method were implemented with the microalgae strain Chlamydomonas reinhardtii CC-125. This experiment focused on scaling up to large amounts of culture, approximately 1L. These cultures were grown in specially designed large bioreactors that were able to accommodate for such large volume of algal culture. Algal cells were treated with …

Characterization Of Metabolic Network In T-Helper 2 Cells, Bailee Lichter Jan 2018

Characterization Of Metabolic Network In T-Helper 2 Cells, Bailee Lichter

UCARE: Research Products

T-helper 2 (Th2) cells function in the adaptive immune system to coordinate responses to large extracellular pathogens (Luckheerham, 2012). Th2 cells are one of the differentiated subtypes cells of CD4+ T cells. CD4+ T cells recognize foreign pathogens and differenitated in specialized subtypes to affectively destroy the pathogen (Luckheerham, 2012). Upon CD4+ T cell activation, the cells undergo metabolic reprogaming, resulting in a shift in metabolism (Almedia, 2016).

We have successfully created a Th2 metabolic network model. The Th2 metabolic network model contains 1151 genes, 2601 metabolites, and 4654 reactions.

Effects Of Subsurface Drainage Systems On Water And Nitrogen Footprints Simulated With Rzwqm2, Kristina J. Craft, Matthew J. Helmers, Robert W. Malone, Carl H. Pederson, Linda R. Schott Jan 2018

Effects Of Subsurface Drainage Systems On Water And Nitrogen Footprints Simulated With Rzwqm2, Kristina J. Craft, Matthew J. Helmers, Robert W. Malone, Carl H. Pederson, Linda R. Schott

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Developing drainage water management (DWM) systems in the Midwest to reduce nitrogen (N) transport to the northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone requires understanding of the long-term performance of these systems. Few studies have evaluated long-term impacts of DWM, and the simulation of controlled drainage (CD) with the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) is limited, while shallow drainage (SD) has not been examined. We tested RZWQM using nine years (2007-2015) of field data from southeast Iowa for CD, SD, conventional drainage (DD), and undrained (ND) systems and simulated the long-term (1971-2015) impacts. RZWQM accurately simulated N loss in subsurface …

A Tunable, Three-Dimensional In Vitro Culture Model Of Growth Plate Cartilage Using Alginate Hydrogel Scaffolds, Alek G. Erickson, Taylor D. Laughlin, Sarah M. Romereim, Catherine N. Sargus-Patino, Angela K. Pannier, Andrew T. Dudley

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Defining the final size and geometry of engineered tissues through precise control of the scalar and vector components of tissue growth is a necessary benchmark for regenerative medicine, but it has proved to be a significant challenge for tissue engineers. The growth plate cartilage that promotes elongation of the long bones is a good model system for studying morphogenetic mechanisms because cartilage is composed of a single cell type, the chondrocyte; chondrocytes are readily maintained in culture; and growth trajectory is predominately in a single vector. In this cartilage, growth is generated via a differentiation program that is spatially and …

Predicting Sexual Revictimization In Childhood And Adolescence: A Longitudinal Examination Using Ecological Systems Theory, Samantha L. Pittenger, Jessica Pogue, David J. Hansen Jan 2018

Predicting Sexual Revictimization In Childhood And Adolescence: A Longitudinal Examination Using Ecological Systems Theory, Samantha L. Pittenger, Jessica Pogue, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A substantial proportion of sexual abuse victims report repeat sexual victimization within childhood or adolescence; however, there is limited understanding of factors contributing to revictimization for youth. Thus, the present study examined predictors of sexual revictimization prior to adulthood using ecological systems theory. Records of 1,915 youth presenting to a Child Advocacy Center (CAC) were reviewed to identify individual, familial, and community factors as well as initial abuse characteristics associated with risk for revictimization. Results showed that 11.1% of youth re-presented to the CAC for sexual revictimization. At the individual level, younger children, girls, ethnoracial minority youth, and those with …

Through The Eyes Of The Beholder: Simulated Eye-Movement Experience (“See”) Modulates Valence Bias In Response To Emotional Ambiguity, Maital Neta, Michael D. Dodd Jan 2018

Through The Eyes Of The Beholder: Simulated Eye-Movement Experience (“See”) Modulates Valence Bias In Response To Emotional Ambiguity, Maital Neta, Michael D. Dodd

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although some facial expressions provide clear information about people’s emotions and intentions (happy, angry), others (surprise) are ambiguous because they can signal both positive (e.g., surprise party) and negative outcomes (e.g., witnessing an accident). Without a clarifying context, surprise is interpreted as positive by some and negative by others, and this valence bias is stable across time. When compared to fearful expressions, which are consistently rated as negative, surprise and fear share similar morphological features (e.g., widened eyes) primarily in the upper part of the face. Recently, we demonstrated that the valence bias was associated with a specific pattern of …

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beer Holder: An Initial Investigation Of The Effects Of Alcohol, Attractiveness, Warmth, And Competence On The Objectifying Gaze In Men, Abigail R. Riemer, Michelle Haikalis, Molly R. Franz, Michael Dodd, David Dilillo, Sarah Gervais Jan 2018

Franz, Michael Dodd, David Dilillo, Sarah Gervais

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Despite literature revealing the adverse consequences of objectifying gazes for women, little work has empirically examined origins of objectifying gazes by perceivers. Integrating alcohol myopia and objectification theories, we examined the effects of alcohol as well as perceived female attractiveness, warmth, and competence on objectifying gazes. Specifically, male undergraduates (n = 49) from a large U.S. Midwestern university were administered either an alcoholic or placebo beverage. After consumption, participants were asked to focus on the appearance or personality (counterbalanced) of pictured women who were previously rated as high, average, or low in attractiveness, warmth, and competence. Replicating previous work, appearance …

Microrna Cluster Mir199a/214 Are Differentially Expressed In Female And Male Rats Following Nicotine Self-Administration, Steven T. Pittenger, Victoria L. Schaal, Dalia Moore, Rahul S. Guda, Sneh Koul, Sowmya V. Yelamanchili, Rick A. Bevins, Gurudutt Pendyala Jan 2018

Microrna Cluster Mir199a/214 Are Differentially Expressed In Female And Male Rats Following Nicotine Self-Administration, Steven T. Pittenger, Victoria L. Schaal, Dalia Moore, Rahul S. Guda, Sneh Koul, Sowmya V. Yelamanchili, Rick A. Bevins, Gurudutt Pendyala

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has established sex differences associated with nicotine intake, however a significant gap in knowledge remains regarding the molecular mechanisms that govern these differences at the transcriptional level. One critical regulator of transcription are microRNAs (miRNAs). miRNAs are a family of non-coding RNAs that regulate an array of important biological functions altered in several disease states, including neuroadaptive changes within the brain associated with drug dependence. We examined the prefrontal cortex (PFC) from male and female Sprague-Dawley rats following self-administration (22 days) of nicotine or yoked saline controls using next generation RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology and found an array of …

Individual Differences In Valence Bias: Fmri Evidence Of The Initial Negativity Hypothesis, Nathan M. Petro, Tien T. Tong, Daniel J. Henley, Maital Neta Jan 2018

Individual Differences In Valence Bias: Fmri Evidence Of The Initial Negativity Hypothesis, Nathan M. Petro, Tien T. Tong, Daniel J. Henley, Maital Neta

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Facial expressions offer an ecologically valid model for examining individual differences in affective decision-making. They convey an emotional signal from a social agent and provide important predictive information about one’s environment (presence of potential rewards or threats). Although some expressions provide clear predictive information (angry, happy), others (surprised) are ambiguous in that they predict both positive and negative outcomes. Thus, surprised faces can delineate an individual’s valence bias, or the tendency to interpret ambiguity as positive or negative. Our initial negativity hypothesis suggests that the initial response to ambiguity is negative, and that positivity relies on emotion regulation. We tested …

Measuring And Understanding Socialemotional Behaviors In Preschoolers From Rural Pakistan, Jenna E. Finch, Aisha K. Yousafzai, Muneera Rasheed, Jelena Obradovic Jan 2018

Measuring And Understanding Socialemotional Behaviors In Preschoolers From Rural Pakistan, Jenna E. Finch, Aisha K. Yousafzai, Muneera Rasheed, Jelena Obradovic

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is widely-used to measure symptoms of common childhood behavioral problems that may lead to mental health difficulties. In a sample of 1,302 highly-disadvantaged mothers and their preschoolers, we evaluated the factor structure and reliability of the parent-report version of the SDQ in rural Pakistan. Confirmatory factor analyses suggested that the original structure of the SDQ was not appropriate for our data. We created conceptually- and empirically-coherent measures of children’s externalizing behavior problems and prosocial skills. Child and family correlates of social-emotional behaviors were similar to those found in other countries, supporting the validity of …

Addicted To Cellphones: Exploring The Psychometric Properties Between The Nomophobia Questionnaire And Obsessiveness In College Students, Seungyeon Lee, Minsung Kim, Jessica S. Mendoza, Ian M. Mcdonough Jan 2018

Addicted To Cellphones: Exploring The Psychometric Properties Between The Nomophobia Questionnaire And Obsessiveness In College Students, Seungyeon Lee, Minsung Kim, Jessica S. Mendoza, Ian M. Mcdonough

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A potential new clinical disorder is arising due to the addiction to cellphones called nomophobiador feelings of discomfort or anxiety experienced by individuals when they are unable to use their mobile phones or utilize the conveniences these devices provide. However, before being able to officially classify this disorder as clinically relevant, more research needs to be conducted to determine how nomophobia relates to existing disorders. In a sample of 397 undergraduate students, the present study examined the relationship between the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) and the Obsessiveness Content Scale (OBS) of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (the MMPI-2). Confirmatory factor analysis …

Alcohol Intoxication Moderates The Association Between A Polygenic Risk Score And Unprovoked Intimate Partner Aggression, Christa C. Christ, Laura E. Watkins, David Dilillo, Scott F. Stoltenberg Jan 2018

Alcohol Intoxication Moderates The Association Between A Polygenic Risk Score And Unprovoked Intimate Partner Aggression, Christa C. Christ, Laura E. Watkins, David Dilillo, Scott F. Stoltenberg

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Despite evidence that genetic variation contributes to aggression, few studies have examined how genetic variation contributes to IPA specifically. In the current study, 69 couples from a Midwestern university completed self-report measures of IPA, childhood trauma exposure, and hazardous alcohol use, and were randomly assigned to consume either a placebo or alcohol beverage before participating in an analogue aggression task against their partner. Genetic risk (i.e., association with lower transcriptional efficiency) for aggression was measured with a polygenic risk score (PRS) created from four polymorphisms (HTR1B rs13212041, HTR2B rs6437000, 5-HTTLPR, and MAOA uVNTR). Among individuals with a low PRS, …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held …

Lake Regionalization And Diatom Metacommunity Structuring In Tropical South America, Xavier Benito, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Miriam Steinitz-Kannan, Maria I. Velez, Michael M. Mcglue

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Lakes and their topological distribution across Earth’s surface impose ecological and evolutionary constraints on aquatic metacommunities. In this study, we group similar lake ecosystems as metacommunity units influencing diatom community structure. We assembled a database of 195 lakes from the tropical Andes and adjacent lowlands (8°N–30°S and 58–79°W) with associated environmental predictors to examine diatom metacommunity patterns at two different levels: taxon and functional (deconstructed species matrix by ecological guilds). We also derived spatial variables that inherently assessed the relative role of dispersal. Using complementary multivariate statistical techniques (principal component analysis, cluster analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, Procrustes, variance partitioning), we …

Comparing The Effects Of Two Tillage Operations On Beneficial Epigeal Arthropod Communities And Their Associated Ecosystem Services In Sugar Beets, Rudolph J. Pretorius, Gary L. Hein, Erin E. Blankenship, Foster F. Purrington, Robert G. Wilson, Jeff D. Bradshaw Jan 2018

Comparing The Effects Of Two Tillage Operations On Beneficial Epigeal Arthropod Communities And Their Associated Ecosystem Services In Sugar Beets, Rudolph J. Pretorius, Gary L. Hein, Erin E. Blankenship, Foster F. Purrington, Robert G. Wilson, Jeff D. Bradshaw

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Beneficial arthropods provide important ecosystem services in terms of arthropod pest and weed management, but these services can be adversely affected by farming practices such as tillage. This study investigated the impact of two tillage operations (zone tillage and moldboard plow) on the activity density of several beneficial, epigeal arthropod taxa, and postdispersal weed seed and prey removal in sugar beet agroecosystems. In addition, four omnivorous ground beetle species were selected for a weed-seed choice feeding assay, whereas a single species was selected for a weed-seed age preference assay. Ground beetles were the most commonly collected taxon (via pitfall sampling), …

Seasonality Of Colaspis Crinicornis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Its Injury Potential To Corn In Southeastern Nebraska, Kentaro Miwa, Lance Meinke

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Colaspis crinicornis Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) primarily occurs in the Great Plains, United States. Although C. crinicornis has historically been considered a non-pest and is rarely found in agricultural systems, population densities of this species have been increasing in corn, Zea mays L., and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, over the last decade in southeastern Nebraska. As part of a comprehensive project to understand the life history and pest potential of C. crinicornis, a field study was conducted to: understand adult seasonality of C. crinicornis using emergence cages and whole-plant-count sampling in cornfields and sweep-net sampling in soybean fields; confirm …

Interactions Between Pesticides And Pathogen Susceptibility In Honey Bees, Scott T. O'Neal, Troy D. Anderson, Judy Wu-Smart Jan 2018

Interactions Between Pesticides And Pathogen Susceptibility In Honey Bees, Scott T. O'Neal, Troy D. Anderson, Judy Wu-Smart

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

There exist a variety of factors that negatively impact the health and survival of managed honey bee colonies, including the spread of parasites and pathogens, loss of habitat, reduced availability or quality of food resources, climate change, poor queen quality, changing cultural and commercial beekeeping practices, as well as exposure to agricultural and apicultural pesticides both in the field and in the hive. These factors are often closely intertwined, and it is unlikely that a single stressor is driving colony losses. There is a growing consensus, however, that increasing prevalence of parasites and pathogens are among the most significant threats …

Muskrats, James E. Miller Jan 2018

Muskrats, James E. Miller

Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series

The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a common, semi-aquatic rodent native to the United States (Figure 1). It spends its life in aquatic habitats and is well adapted for swimming.

Although muskrats are an important part of native ecosystems, their burrowing and foraging activities can damage agricultural crops, native marshes and water control systems, such as aquaculture and farm ponds and levees. Such damage can significantly impact agricultural crops like rice that rely on consistent water levels for growth.

Muskrats also cause damage by eating agricultural crops, other vegetation, and crayfish, mussels and other aquaculture products. Loss of vegetation …

Wild Turkeys, James E. Miller Jan 2018

Wild Turkeys, James E. Miller

Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series

Like other bird and mammal species whose populations have been restored through conservation efforts, wild turkeys (Figure 1) are treasured by many recreationists and outdoor enthusiasts. Wild turkeys have responded positively to wildlife habitat and population management. In some areas, however, their increased populations have led to increased damage to property and agricultural crops, and threats to human health and safety. Turkeys frequent agricultural fields, pastures, vineyards and orchards, as well as some urban and suburban neighborhoods. Because of this, they may cause damage or mistakenly be blamed for damage. Research has found that despite increases in turkey numbers and …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Although sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ssp. bicolor] is the fifth most important grain crop in terms of global production, no commercial hybrids carry genetically engineered (GE) traits for resistance to insect pests or herbicides due to regulatory concerns about gene flow to weedy relatives. However, non-GE herbicide resistance currently is being developed in grain sorghum and will likely transfer to related weeds. Monitoring the impact of this new nuclear technology on the evolution and invasiveness of related weeds requires a baseline understanding of the population biology of grain sorghum genes once they transfer to in situ weed …
