Genetic And Biochemical Aspects Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Synthesis In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, A. Kleinhofs Jan 1966

Genetic And Biochemical Aspects Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Synthesis In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, A. Kleinhofs

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) the cis- and trans-isomers of o-hydroxycinnamic acid occur primarily as the respective, β-D-glucosides. Available evidence indicates that these glucosides are formed via the following pathway: phenylalanine (formed from shikimic acid) → trans-cinnamic acid → o-coumaric acid (trans-o-hydroxycinnamic acid) → o-coumaryl glucoside (trans-β-D-glucosyl-o-hydroxycinnamic acid) → coumarinyl glucoside (cis-β-D-glucosyl-o-hydroxycinnamic acid). In tissues that are disrupted, coumarinyl glucoside is rapidly hydrolyzed by the action of endogenous β-glucosidase to yield coumarinic acid, which lactonizes spontaneously to form coumarin. The cu …

Factors Affecting Nesting Success Of The Canvasback In The Aspen Parklands, Jerome H. Stoudt

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Minnedosa study area is located in the southwestern portion of Manitoba just south of the town of Minnedosa. It is 90 square miles in size and roughly square in shape. The Aspen Parkland, in which the study area is located, is characterized by gently rolling terrain and black soils. Mixed farming is the rule with emphasis on small grain production consisting of wheat, barley, and oats. Roughly 50 percent of the water areas in the parkland are ringed with aspen, Populus tremuloides, and large blocks of aspen are interspersed throughout the area. The Minnedosa area differs because of …

Relationship Between Measures Of Semen Quality And Fertility In Bulls Mated Under Natural Conditions, J. N. Wiltbank, W. W. Rowden, J. E. Ingalls Dec 1965

Relationship Between Measures Of Semen Quality And Fertility In Bulls Mated Under Natural Conditions, J. N. Wiltbank, W. W. Rowden, J. E. Ingalls

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

An evaluation of the relationship between several measures of semen quality and fertility of bulls mated under natural conditions has been conducted over a three-year period. Semen was collected three different times with an electro-ejaculator from bulls used in the fertility tests. Collections were made at weekly intervals. Fertility was evaluated by mating bulls to heifers starting about three days after the last collection. Semen quality refers to the percent abnormals and the percent motility evaluated at the time of collection. Fertility was measured by the proportion of heifers that settled at natural service. Several multiple regression equations were calculated. …

The Elusive Musk Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 1965

The Elusive Musk Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

If one were to try to choose the most remarkable duck in the world, serious consideration would have to be given the Australian Musk Duck (Biziura lobata) of the family Anatidae. Among its unusual features are the great dimorphism of the sexes (males weigh eight pounds or more and are about three feet from bill to tail; females weigh two to three pounds and measure about two feet), the leathery pendent lobe that is located on the lower mandible, the strong odor of musk that is prominent in males during the breeding season, and the remarkably large eggs (averaging one-half …

The Coccidian Parasites (Protozoa, Sporozoa) Of Rodents, Norman D. Levine, Virginia Ivens

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

This monograph summarizes the known information on taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, hosts, location in the host, pathogenicity, geographic distribution, and cross-transmission studies of the 196 named species of coccidia of rodents. These include 176 species of Eimeria, 9 of Isospora, 3 of Wenyonella, 2 each of Cryptosporidium and Klossiella, and 1 each of Dorisiella, Caryospora, Tyzzeria, and Klossia. In addition, similar data are given for those forms for which insufficient information is available to justify assigning them names.

Eimeria, which is the most common genus, has been described from only 15% …

Plant Communities: Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Thanks to our rapid increase in population ,and the largely indiscriminate spread of urban, industrial, and transport facilities, the time is not far distant when land-use capabilities must receive much more attention than they have enjoyed. Natural, that is pre-settlement, vegetation, integrating as it did the manifold factors of environment, is un-excelled as a guide to potential land use.

Cytogenetic Evidence For The Specific Distinction Of An Alaskan Marmot, Marmota Broweri Hall And Gilmore (Mammalia: Sciuridae), Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cytogenetic studies based upon somatic cells (bone marrow) have disclosed that the marmot hitherto designated Marmota caligata broweri Hall and Gilmore, occurring in the Brooks Range of Arctic Alaska, differs from M. c. caligata (Eschscholtz) in number of chromosomes (2n=36 as compared with 2n=42 in M. caligata) and in proportions of chromosomal types. Typical karyograms for the two species are presented. It is concluded that the Brooks Range marmot is specifically distinct from M. caligata, the applicable name being Marmota broweri Hall and Gilmore. Also determined were diploid chromosome numbers for two other Nearctic species of marmots, M. …

Regulation Of Pheasant Density Through Nest Abandonment In South-Central Nebraska, Raymond L. Linder, C. Phillip Agee Mar 1965

Regulation Of Pheasant Density Through Nest Abandonment In South-Central Nebraska, Raymond L. Linder, C. Phillip Agee

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

In a five-year study of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) in south-central Nebraska, Linder, Lyon and Agee (1960) proposed that "the quality of nesting environment determines the number of nests which will be successful in a given year; this regulates total production which in turn determines the following year's breeding population." These conclusions were based upon the following findings:

1. A close correlation existed between the number of chicks produced and the number of hens the following spring. Because of this relationship it was concluded that mortality through fall, winter and early spring was relatively constant from year …

Sources of combined resistance to spotted alfalfa and pea aphids were found in Ranger alfalfa and its parental strains, foreign plant introductions, clones and their progenies. Ranger alfalfa appeared to be a good source for selection of plants with resistance to both aphids.

Luteotropic Properties Of Luteinizing Hormone And Nature Of Oxytocin Induced Luteal Inhibition In Cattle, Lloyd Donaldson, William Hansel, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1965

Luteotropic Properties Of Luteinizing Hormone And Nature Of Oxytocin Induced Luteal Inhibition In Cattle, Lloyd Donaldson, William Hansel, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fifty-three Holstein heifers were used to study the effects of oxytocin administered alone and in combination with various gonadotropins on the weights and progesterone contents of corpora lutea. Pituitary gonadotropin levels were compared in untreated and oxytocin-treated heifers at three stages of the estrous cycle.

Oxytoein injections on Days 2 through 6 significantly reduced the weights and total progesterone contents but not the progesterone concentrations of glands removed on Day 7. The concurrent administration of either purified bovine luteinizing hormone (LH) or human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) significantly increased these parameters from the oxytocin treatment levels to normal or supra-normal values. …

The present study was undertaken to test and evaluate the various taxonomic arrangements of the family, to discover some of the trends of behavioral evolution, and to provide a basis for future workers to use in naming, describing, and evaluating the behavioral patterns observed in waterfowl.

The major sexual behavior patterns of the species of Anatidae are reviewed and summarized, for the purpose of clarifying evolutionary relationships in the family, tracing the evolution of behavior patterns through various taxa, and evaluating the importance of certain behavior patterns as potential isolating mechanisms.

Species treated include:
Magpie Goose, Fulvous and Cuban Whistling …

Handbook Of Waterfowl Behavior: Tribe Aythyini (Pochards), Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1965

Handbook Of Waterfowl Behavior: Tribe Aythyini (Pochards), Paul A. Johnsgard

Handbook of Waterfowl Behavior by Paul A. Johnsgard

The dabbling ducks grade almost imperceptibly into the pochard group considered here, and whether Marmaronetta and Rhodonessa should be included in one tribe or the other may be open to some question. As here constituted, the tribe includes 16 species of almost world-wide distribution which differ from the preceding group in several minor details. The hind toe has a larger lobe than occurs in the dabbling ducks, and it presumably aids in diving. The feet are also correspondingly larger and are set farther apart and more to the rear than in Anas. One of the most clear-cut differences is …

Litter Size And Proportion Of Females In The Offspring Of Multiparous Rats With Varying Uterine Metabolic Levels, A. B. Schutz Jan 1965

Litter Size And Proportion Of Females In The Offspring Of Multiparous Rats With Varying Uterine Metabolic Levels, A. B. Schutz

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The rate of TTC reduction by the uterine tissue of rats was determined at specific stages of the oestrous cycle, and in successive cycles at the same stage. Individual females showed a characteristic level of reaction to TTC. Mothers whose uteri had a high reaction rate with TTC produced litters with a higher percentage of female pups than did mothers with a low level of reaction. Previous studies have shown that TTC reduction rate represents a metabolic activity of uterine tissue that is induced by oestrogens.

Statistics In The Design And Analysis Of Physiology Experiments, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Statistics should be considered as a tool by the animal experimenter in much the same way that a chemical analysis or a radiation counter is used as a tool. Too often statistics is considered as something magical which can restore order out of chaos and perhaps absolve the experimenter from mistakes in logic and procedure. It is true of course that the statistician through his knowledge of statistical procedures can sometimes help salvage some results from an otherwise hopelessly muddled experiment. One point must be made clear at the outset—the statistician is not a tool of the experimenter although statistics …

Mechanisms Controlling The Formation And Persistence Of The Corpus Luteum, L. L. Anderson, R. M. Melampy Jan 1965

Mechanisms Controlling The Formation And Persistence Of The Corpus Luteum, L. L. Anderson, R. M. Melampy

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Mechanisms which control formation of corpora lutea during the estrous cycle, and particularly factors affecting their persistence and regression in various reproductive stages, have been of considerable interest to physiologists concerned with developing methods for control of the estrous cycle in domestic animals. Some recent reviews on control of ovarian function are those by Chester Jones and Ball (30), Anderson et al. (9) and Short (121).

The Role Of Light In The Regulation Of Cyclical Estrous Activity In Sheep, M. T. Clegg, H. H. Cole, W. F. Ganong

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The widespread existence of biological clocks among animals is documented by a considerable body of evidence. Recently Farner (13) has reviewed this subject covering information on a large variety of animals. In this paper an attempt will be made to restrict most of the discussion to sheep. Experimental data from other species, however, will be cited when it can be usefully related to an understanding of the mechanisms controlling seasonal breeding activity in this species. As far as present knowledge is concerned, the factors regulating or at least monitoring annual physiologic cycles appear to depend greatly upon the influence of …
