Ab initio energies for electric dipole transitions 4d¹⁰ (¹S₀) → 4d⁹4f J = 1 in triply-ionized lanthanum have been calculated by constructing an effective interaction, acting within the configuration 4d⁹4f, that incorporates effects of virtual 4d-shell excitations to all orders of perturbation. Virtual 4d-shell excitations, included within the random phase approximation, and virtual excitations to singly-excited configurations 4d⁹εf are found to reduce the ordinary electrostatic interaction by 38% for the ¹P₁ term of 4d⁹4f, by 6% for the ³D₁ term, and by 3% …

All land management activities on managed rangelands will have some impact(s) on fish habitat; those in the riparian zone will have the greatest impact(s). Native trout populations in the Great Basin of southeastern Oregon exhibit predictable responses to alterations in their habitats; optimum production of native trout is therefore achievable through careful habitat management.

A self-sustaining rainbow trout population has developed in the North Platte River drainage. This population inhabits McConaughy Reservoir and reproduces successfully in tributary streams of the North Platte River located approximately 11.3 to 145 km above the reservoir. Fall and spring spawning populations migrate from the reservoir.

Scale analysis indicated 92% of the juveniles had spent 1 yr and 8% had spent 2 yr in the stream before the spring migration to the reservoir as 175-250 mm smolts. In the 1965-1969 spawning populations 1.3 life history categories were present. The spawning runs were composed of 76% maiden spawners, 22% second-year …

Nebraska Law Review

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Boraas v. Village of Belle Terre sanctioned a new standard to govern the application of the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment. Faced with an exclusionary zoning ordinance, the court abandoned the rigid two-tiered equal protection approach in favor of a test directed toward determining whether the legislative classification was in fact substantially related to the ordinance's objective. As a result of applying this interpretation, the court found the zoning ordinance unconstitutional. This note examines whether the court's test was correct in light of recent United States Supreme …

How can you tell if you have atrazine carryover in your fields? Plants grown in soil samples can tell.

Residues of atrazine may remain in the soil and affect some susceptible crops the next year. Crops most often affected include soybeans, field beans, sugarbeets, alfalfa, oats, wheat and many broadleaf horticultural crops.

Attempts to predict the extent of carryover and damage to sensitive crops the year following atrazine use have been only partially successful. This paper will not attempt a comprehensive review of the recent literature on socialization. Rather, it will deal with four areas of the comparative study of childhood which have particular interest to this writer: systematic ethnographic reports on child life in non-Western societies; education and anthropology; cognitive style and socialization; and socialization for sex role. As a further means of narrowing the potential range of this review, the author will exclude most reports of infant, adolescent, and adult socialization.

The relative importance of various foods occurring in the diet of blue-winged teal (Anas discors), pintail (A. acuta), and gadwall (A. strepera) breeding in south-central North Dakota and lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) breeding in the vicinity of Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories, are com- pared by the aggregate volume and aggregate percent methods. Advantages of the aggregate percent method are discussed in relation to the information presented.

Natural habitats usually do not provide bacteria the continuity of agricultural crops. With continuous culture. perpetuation of pathogen is no problem. Although agricul­ tural practices provide some discontinuity between crops. it is less than that in nature. Uniformity of crop germ plasm also favors inoculum buildup and perhaps perpetuation of the pathogens.

Bacillus thuringiensis sporulates in a glucose-glutamate medium without concurrent derepression of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Glutamate appears to regulate tricarboxylic acid cycle activity as well as to influence spore heat resistance and production of dipicolinic acid.

In each food processing plant, soil deposition and removal constitute unique processes influenced by the food, water supply, processing equipment, and cleaning regimen. Since there are so many complex as well as unique processes, the scientific literature represents many varied approaches to problems related to deposition and removal of soil.
