Summary. Four of the five subspecies of Geomys pinetis were karyotyped. All specimens examined had a diploid number of 42 and a fundamental number of 80. This karyotype was compared with the described karyotypes of other species of Geomys and was considered to be derived from an ancestoral form having a karyotype of about 70 acrocentric elements.

Usable life of cleaning solutions in a model heat processing unit was studied by evaluation of the nature and quantity of residue remaining on the surface of the equipment after cleaning. Lipoidal residue was recovered from equipment surfaces by ether rinsing. A surface displacement technique was used to quantify the lipoidal material, which was characterized by gas-liquid chromatographic analyses of triglycerides and fatty acid methyl esters. Effects of factors, such as water hardness, rinse water temperature, cleaning solution additives and acid versus alkaline cleaners also were investigated in relation to overall cleaning efficiency. In addition to listing digenetic trematodes found in cephalopods, we provide descriptions of adults of Derogenes varicus and larvae of Lecithochirium microstomum, Lecithochirium sp., Elytrophallus sp., Monilicaecum sp., and Stephanochasmus sp. Only the first had been described previously from cephalopods, and the last represents the first record of a nonpiscine second intermediate host for a species of Stephanochasmus. We found 15 species infected, which brings to nearly 30 the total number of squids, octopods, and cuttlefish reported to be infected with Digenea. Many early records of trematodes in cephalopods are actually reports of Monogenea, Cestoda, or reproductive organs …

What happens in the lung is that air meets blood. Figure 1 shows the lung's architecture. Focus your attention upon the smallest scale structures which are the termini of the air passages. These are the alveolar air sacs or, simply, alveoli. The inhalation/exhalation actions of the lung, alternately, flood these alveoli with atmospheric air and expel its oxygen-poor/carbon dioxide-rich replacement. Unlike the Eurasian marine leeches (Johansson, 1896; Selensky, 1915; Herter, 1935; Vasileyev, 1939; Knight-Jones, 1961; Sawyer, 1970; Soós, 1965), those from North America comprise an unusually neglected group, due primarily to the bewildering taxonomy of the members. Most early descriptions were brief, ambiguous, and concerned only with superficial characters. Some of the nominal species reported from the eastern United States and Canada are unrecognizable today, thus perpetuating nomenclatural confusion.

We present a quantum mechanical treatment of laser-induced atomic fluorescence from molecular sodium. It is shown that such fluorescence data may be analyzed with an ν-centroid approximation and an accurate determination of the electronic transition moment may be made.

I. Gunter and Christmas (1973) described the events leading to the stranding of a baleen whale on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1968, giving the species as Balaenopteru physalus, the Rorqual. Unfortunately the identification was in error, but fortunately good photographs were shown. The underside of the tail was a splotched white, but there was no black margin. The specimen also had fewer throat and belly grooves than the Rorqual, as a comparison with True’s (1904) photograph shows. A formula for the OER in a mixed field of neutrons and gamma rays (Hall, 1972a; 1972b) is given .... Our results, calculated from track structure theory (Katz and Sharma, 1973) and secondary particle-energy spectra in tissue from these neutrons (Caswell and Coyne, 1973; Dennis, 1972) are within 5 per cent of the values of O_mix found from the Hall formula, when that formula is supplied with calculated values of R_n, O_n, and O_γ, at appropriate survival levels. Our calculations suggest that the Hall formula may be used with confidence for neutrons of …

Population Suppression Of Western Corn Rootworm By Adult Control With Ulv Malathion, K. P. Pruess, John F. Witkowski, Earle S. Raun

ULV malathion (9.7 oz AI/acre) was applied by air to a 16 square-mile area during August of 1968, 1969, and 1970. Adult Diabrotica virgifera LeConte populations were reduced the following season by 39, 54, and 72%. No economic infestations occurred in the treated area the year following any application. Postspray migration of beetles was very limited, but adult migration during the peak emergence period the following season contributed to repopulation of the treated area. Migration and fecundity appear to be density-dependent factors which favor increases under low populations. Area suppression does not appear economically feasible, but adult control in individual …

The new genus Inodosporus was erected to accept I. spraguei, a new species having eight sporoblasts per pansporoblast with each subsequent spore possessing three or four basal spore-tails and one branched apical one. It is primarily by the apical tail that the species is separated from the only other recognized species, I. octospora (Henneguy, 1892) comb. n., formerly Thelohania octospora.

Spore-tails of I. spraguei are membranous channels which originate within differentiating pansporoblasts during genesis of sporonts into sporoblasts. Three species of anoplocephaline cestodes, Anoplocephalinae gen. et sp. indet., Schizorchis cf. altaica Gvozdev, 1951, and Ectopocephalium abei gen. et sp. n., are reported from pikas, Ochotona roylei (Ogilby) and O. macrotis (Giinther), from central Nepal. The taxonomic status of Schizorchis esarsi Lovekar et al., 1972, and of Schizorchodes dipodomi Bienek and Grundmann, 1972, is discussed, with the conclusion that both species belong in the subfamily Linstowiinae, near the genus Atriotaenia Sandground, 1926. Ectopocephalium gen. n. is distinguished from other genera in the subfamily Anoplocephalinae by the modified anterior portion of the strobila, which is embedded in the tissue of …

Sixteen species of bats are reported from Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta, Venezuela. These include two species of emballonurids, one noctilionid, two mormoopids, nine phyllostomatids, one vespertilionid, and one molossid. Accounts including natural history and taxonomic comments are given for each species. The chiropteran fauna of Margarita Island is compared with the bat faunas of the adjacent Venezuelan mainland and islands off the northern coast of South America, including Trinidad and other Antillean islands. It is concluded that the chiropteran fauna of Margarita Island represents an attenuated mainland fauna.

Tarnished And Alfalfa Plant Bugs In Alfalfa: Population Suppression With Ulv Malathion, K. P. Pruess

ULV malathion (9.7 oz AI/acre) was applied to a 16 mi² area in August 1968, 1969, and 1970 for western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera LeConte, adult control. Nontarget insects in alfalfa, also treated, were monitored. Tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), was reduced 89–98%. Survival of eggs and adult migration resulted in rapid reinfestation of the treated area in 1969 and 1970; adult migration alone was important in 1968. Alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), was reduced 96–98%. Repopulation following the 1969 and 1970 treatments was by development from eggs surviving the treatment.
